I have always loved historical fantasy fiction. The thrill of adventure, the magic of stepping into a new world, and meeting amazing characters - C.K. Brooke's The Duchess Quest gave me this and so much more. Filled with action and romance, this story was an absolute delight to read.
Dainy was a sweet but feisty character whom I immediately wanted to befriend. A bit naïve to the ways of the world, she was an easy target for those looking to take advantage of her, and her new royal status. Her story was fascinating but harrowing. My heart bled for the family she'd never get to see again, and I had plenty of hope that being reunited with her only living relative would help some, especially after she was hit with the devastating reality of just who she was and how she came to be with Priya and Paxi.
The real action and adventure began with the quest to find the Duchess, and with the mixed bunch of competitors who showed up to partake in the challenge, there was bound to be some friction. Cosmith stood out as quite the scoundrel, but I found myself gravitating toward him more and more as this story continued. Not one to shy away from using the most underhanded means to get what he wanted, Jon Cosmith was nonetheless charismatic and captured my affections almost as quickly as he did Dainy’s.
Mac was a sweet boy, but he was a little too safe for my liking. Thank goodness I wasn’t the only one who thought so or it would have made things extremely awkward.
This story was filled with exciting twists and at times it was quite frightening. Just when I thought the troop of travelers was in the clear, so Brooke threw in more hurdles that threatened to dash Dainy’s new found happiness, as well as that of a few of her companions. In the end, everything worked out just as it should, but not without bringing to light the next adventure that awaited the characters. I cannot wait to go on yet another enthralling journey with them as this story continues.
