Spotlight: Author Interview with Heather Lyons

TheFateSeries

Hello, Therians!

Well, I'm sure you all saw the fantastic cover for A Matter of Truth, as well as the new cover for,
A Matter of Fate, which were both revealed yesterday.

Today I have the honor of having Heather Lyons here for a quick chat :)

Enjoy!!

Hi Heather,
Thanks for joining us today!

1.      Tell us a bit more about yourself.
Once upon a time, I was an archaeologist and then a teacher, but now I’m a writer and a stay-at-home mom. I’m also a voracious reader myself who one-clicks way too often!

2.      Have you always wanted to be an author?
Yes and no—when I was a kid, I really wanted to be an author, but it seemed unrealistic. So I became an archaeologist instead, which was really a dream job. Once I had my kids, I decided to give writing a try again. I’m so glad I did! I love sharing my stories with readers.

3.      What genre do you love to read? Who are some of your favourite authors?
I mostly read romance, be it YA, NA, historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, or the like. I pretty much love reading about love. Authorwise, I really adore Jane Austen (but then, who doesn’t?), Stephanie Perkins, Kristin Cashore, and Alexander McCall Smith. It’s hard to pick just a few, though!

4.      If you could be a character from any of your books, who would you be?
Oh, wow. This is tough! From the Fate series, I’d probably pick somebody like Giuliana, because I think it would be awesome to control the weather. Plus, her life isn’t quite as angsty as some of the others. Haha!

5.      What obstacles did you encounter on the road to being published? How did you overcome them?
The biggest roadblock was whether or not I could actually go indie with the Fate series. Part of me really wanted to go the traditional route, but I’d also heard such great things about the indie publishing world that it took some time to decide which way I would go. I knew that, indie-wise, it would take a lot more work to get my book out there and noticed, so that was a big consideration. Eventually, though, I decided it might be worth the risk to try it. J

6.      What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?
Honestly? Just keep on writing. Write every day if you can. And then write some more. If you want to get into publishing, give your book the respect it deserves—hire an excellent editor and then listen to them when they give you feedback.

7.      How did you come up with the idea for the Fate Series?
I’ve been obsessed with world mythologies ever since I was a little girl; my grandmother used to read me stories all the time. It was a completely fascinating idea to me—just what if the ancients had it right, and there were beings who controlled our world and lives? Even more so—what if the most powerful person was a teenage girl with boy problems? It seemed much too fun of an idea to pass up!

8.      Describe your books in one sentence?
The Fate series is all about Chloe Lilywhite’s journey toward discovering her place in the worlds—who she is, who she wants to be, and what she can do.

9.      Did you learn anything from writing this book? What?
Well, I definitely learned how to be brutal (and realistic) when it comes to editing my writing. Even if I like something (a storyline, characters, sentences, etc . . .) a lot, if it doesn’t work, it needs to go.

10.  Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?
I’m currently working on the third book in the Fate series—A Matter of Truth. It’s all about Chloe discovering what her “truths” are: what she feels her life should be like, not what others tell her it should be.

11.  Is there any exciting news you’d like to share with us?
I recently moved up my release date for A Matter of Truth from December 17th to November 5th! I’m so excited to share this story with everybody.

Book 1 in The Fate Series,
A MATTER OF FATE

Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn't a normal teenage girl. She's a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she's a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she's to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind.

Their number one target? Chloe, of course.

That's nothing compared to the boy trouble she's gotten herself into. Because a guy she's literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to. Chloe's once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.

ABOUT A MATTER OF HEART

No longer in high school, Chloe Lilywhite is now living and working in Annar, the Magicals' city-state plane of existence. Since moving, she's joined the Council, gone on missions with the Guard, moved into her own apartment, and enrolled at the University of Annar. Plus, she's happily engaged to be married to Jonah Whitecomb, the literal man from her dreams, not to mention her Connection. While she still struggles with aspects of her craft, Chloe feels like she's finally coming into her own, especially after a difficult year that had her questioning nearly everything in her life.

After a brutal attack by the Elders, her life is turned upside down once more. Accusations fly throughout the Council and Guard, forcing Chloe to confront her worst fears about what's she's capable of as a Creator. And then there's the matter of Kellan Whitecomb, Jonah's twin brother and Chloe's ex, who resurfaces after disappearing months before. Although Chloe chose Jonah, and despite their best efforts, the two find it hard to stay away from one another. But no matter what Fate throws at her, Chloe is determined to take charge of her life, even as it begins to spiral out of control.

A MATTER OF HEART is book 2 in the Fate Series, a mature Young Adult/New Adult fantasy.

Book 3 in The Fate Series,
A MATTER OF TRUTH
Not long ago, Chloe Lilywhite seemingly had it all: a prized spot on the Magicals’ Council as lead Creator, a loving fiancé and Connection, and a wealth of good friends. But the poised young woman she projected was nothing more than a façade. Her parents all but disowned her. Power plays and accusations of murder within the Council rocked her confidence. And most difficult of all, her secret, a secondary Connection to Jonah’s twin brother, Kellan, became painfully impossible to resist. Desperate to gain control over her rapidly unraveling existence, Chloe did the unthinkable: she ran away.

Now living and working in Alaska under an alias, Chloe is slowly discovering who she is and, more importantly, who she wants to be. But the more she tries to leave the Magical world behind, the harder it becomes to stay hidden. The Elders are back with a vengeance, and the stakes have never been higher. Chloe finally has to make a choice: embrace her pre-ordained Fate or pave her own way in the worlds. One thing’s for sure, though—she’s finally up for the challenge.

*This is a New Adult title, suitable for readers 18+
