And now please enjoy this excerpt from What I Really Learned in College

“Okay, this is how you do it.” Nick took a packet of sugar, ripped it open and emptied the contents on top of his hand. “Lick.” He licked. “Shot.” He squeaked out the word. “And suck.” He quickly picked up a lemon wedge from the bowl in the center of the table and sucked hard on it. “Your turn.” He looked over at Lisa with an I-dare-you look on his face. She looked across the table from me, silently telling me he should know better.

I rolled my eyes back at her. “You too.” Mason nudged me in the side. “Come on,” he urged until I picked up a packet of sugar and handed one to Lisa.

She shook the contents of the packet down to one end keeping her eyes on Nick. “Are you even old enough to be here?” she teased him.

“I’m old enough,” he replied with a smirk.

Lisa looked at me and winked. Then she took a hold of Nick’s hand, turned it upside down and dumped the sugar on the inside of his wrist. The other three guys chuckled and Nick smiled nervously. She leaned over him in a seductive manner and gently licked the sugar off Nick’s wrist. Nick blushed four shades of red while Lisa took her shot and eagerly sucked on a lemon wedge. I couldn’t stop laughing.

“Top that!” Lisa dared me and slid a shot towards me.

“Please . . .” I shifted in my seat towards Mason and ripped the sugar packet open. Mason had a devilish grin on his face. I smiled and shook my head at him. I tilted his head to the side and brushed his curls out of my way, dumping the sugar on the small of his neck. That brought about another holler from the other three guys and Lisa roared. I leaned into Mason so he could feel my breath against his neck and slowly dragged my tongue over his warm skin, did the shot, and sucked on the lemon. Everyone at the table cheered.

I smiled over at Mason not believing I had just done that to him. From the look on his face, he couldn’t believe it either. Each of the guys picked up their shot, toasted Lisa and I, and downed them.

“Okay, it’s on soccer mom.” Lisa said with a smirk as the waitress brought around a fresh round of drinks and shots for us all.  She playfully pushed Nick’s face sideways and scattered the sugar grains along his cheek, ending right next to his lips. Nick was grinning from ear to ear in anticipation. Lisa twisted herself around to where she was nearly sitting on Nick’s lap. She caressed his cheek as she slowly dragged her tongue over the sugar, ending with a long passionate kiss. This trick brought about a round of applause and cheers from the guys, who then immediately turned to me to see if I was going to attempt to top her last play.

“Was that supposed to be sexy?” I tossed at her jokingly. “This is sexy.” I lifted up another sugar packet and gave it a good shake before I turned towards Mason. “Stick out your tongue please.” He obliged. I shook the sugar over his tongue. “Forgive me if this is out of line,” I whispered softly in his ear when everyone else thought I was just tormenting him. Mason turned towards me cupping my face in his hands and sliding his tongue gently over mine. Then he tightened his hold just a bit and finished the kiss with a passion and fire that I had not felt in years. He literally took my breath away. When he finally broke away from me he buried his face in my neck and whispered softly, “Ditto.”

Your Writing Process

My writing process is actually very simple...I create more, write more when i am surrounded by lots of noise. I suppose that is due to having a house full of teenagers. If  I had to wait until it was quiet in my house, I would never get past the first sentence.

I know a lot of writers who sit down and create an outline for their entire book start to finish. Personally, I have never been able to do that.  I have always subscribed more towards the theory of organized chaos. I start with an idea and let the story/characters grow and blossom on their own. Occasionally, the storyline veres off in a direction I had not foreseen, but is in fact,  better and more intriguing than the direction I was originally going. My characters develop their own personalities and sometimes behave or react to a situation that I don’t even like, but I have to be true to who they are or have grown into.

Despite having my own office in my house, I do the majority of my writing in my family room on my couch surrounded by a blaring television or music and teenagers coming and going. I have the bad habit of getting lost in my writing and forgetting about the world around me. Sometimes to the extent that meals, typically dinners, get pushed back for hours until eventually my husband and children just fix something on their own because they get tired of waiting for me to do it. When that happens and they hear the repeated, ‘Okay, just a second. Let me finish this part’, they know it’s not going to be anytime soon. My family has dubbed this loss of reality as, ‘Momma’s lost in Denialville...again!’. But, it’s meant affectionately in a teasingly manner.

Occasionally, if I hit a fork in the road and cannot decide which avenue to take, I’ll step back, go for a walk and try to look at both scenarios and through Alex’s eyes. Sometimes I have even discussed both directions with my husband and what the consequences of each path could be. He’s been an amazing sounding board to bounce ideas off of or just talk about the where the storyline is going.

Being a novelist is a dream come true for me. I have always had an overactive imagination fueled by a slight addiction to coffee, gummy bears, and the love of making the impossible into plausible. Every writer has their own unique style, traditions, and habits that they adhere to. There is no universal process that works for everyone. The trick is to learn what works for you and tweak and adjust as necessary.

REVIEW

A fun and flirty read, this book was quite unique with its setup and the roles the characters played. Being the same age as Alex, I put myself in her shoes as she traversed each and every obstacle that came along with dating a younger guy, and there seemed to be many – Aside from the big age gap there was the fact that Alex was a mother, both Mason and Alex’s parent’s concern, Alex’s douche bag ex, and then of course the scrutiny of everyone else around them.

In the beginning I had to wonder what Mason really wanted from Alex. Was it a thrill for him to be with an older woman, to flaunt the idea of being with her, especially with all the attention she got from the other younger guys in college. But their relationship grew into something much more than just two people having fun and Mason seemed to be really genuine. This led me to wondering about Alex’s intentions. Was she in it just for the thrill of being with a younger guy and having fun, or was there something more.

As stated before, I enjoyed the role reversal in this story. There are so many male dominant books and it was refreshing to read a story where the woman was the dominant, even if it was more for fun and experimentation.

The ending of this book left me with many questions and I’m eager to see what is going to happen next.
