Blog Tour: Review + #Giveaway: Sex on the Beach Series by Jen McLaughlin, Jennifer Probst & Jenna Bennett

I am still completely thrilled by the way in which this series has been written. The first set of books that saw three amazing friends fall in love with equally amazing men, were sassy and romantic, and I loved how in tune the authors were with their characters as well as each other. So, when I got a chance to read the next set of books in this series, I jumped at it.

Quinn and James' Story Continues in Chasing Me... It was supposed to be a love story....

I knew she was out of my league but I didn’t care. Looking back, I wonder if I hadn’t pursued her, would things have turned out differently? Is it Fate that determines our choices in life? God? Free will? Or just plain old innate selfishness? I got her, of course. There hadn’t been a girl I wasn’t able to seduce. Problem was she seduced me right back, body, mind, and soul. She possessed me, tormented me, and showed me a world that was so bright and pure I was almost blinded. Didn’t she know after such a drug I could never settle for less? Didn’t she realize no matter how many times I screwed up, or broke her heart, or bent her to my will, I’d never be able to let her go? If I hadn’t known such intensity existed, would it have been better for both of us? True love, the real kind, isn’t nice and sweet and pure. No, it’s dirty, and sinful, and messy. It’s like ripping a chunk of flesh from your body and watching yourself bleed out in slow, helpless intervals until you thankfully pass out.

This isn’t a love story. But it’s the only story I got.

REVIEW

Quinn and James’ story was not as wild and crazy as Mac and Austin’s but it was just as emotional. Their love story had started off on shaky ground and I was hoping that they’d find stability, and it looked like they had. Yes, they had to deal with Quinn’s dad’s disapproval and their schedules meant they hardly had time for each other, but they seemed to be making it work. As things got more complicated, so the stress of life started to wear on their relationship and the cracks started to show.

Even though Quinn was stretching herself to the limit, I was glad that she was so focused on her dream. James was having a bit of a harder time and I wanted to see him succeed so badly. I could understand his frustration and I’m sure it was difficult for him to have gone from having anything and everything he ever wanted, to having to fight tooth and nail for what he really needed, and that included keeping Quinn in his life. He had a moment of weakness, but I could forgive him because of the emotional and mental battle he was fighting day after day.

The drama in this book had more to do with the emotional state of its characters, their fear of failure and the pressure to succeed. It highlighted that there may not always be outside influences that cause the breakdown of a relationship, pushing it to the limits, until finally one or both parties does something they regret.

REVIEW

Mac and Austin’s story ripped out my heart from the very beginning and as they worked through their drama, so it slowly mended itself. I loved these two in the first book and I was so hopeful that they’d make it through anything, but I was a little worried because there was so much miscommunication between them and it very nearly tore apart the love they’d worked so hard to build. It was actually quite frustrating that they were both so stubborn and weren’t able to just sort things out before everything blew out of proportion. If I was in Mac’s shoes, though, and the man I loved sort of said things that made it seem he wanted more than I could give, I would have been as heart broken and angry as she was.
This story was filled with emotional ups and downs. I was torn between Mac and Austin because I hated seeing them both so miserable and apart, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to slap them or hug them. I was glad that they finally came to their senses though.

FINDING YOU by Jenna Bennett

Sex on the Beach, the do-over. I had a simple plan for what to do in Key West the second time around.

Testify at the trial of the rapist I helped catch last year. Make sure he gets locked away for the rest of his natural life, so he can never, ever hurt another girl. Wait for my BFFs to get to town, so we can celebrate. And stay far away from Ty Connor, because three months after breaking up with him, I still don’t know whether being with him is worse than being without him.

Spring Break, take two. All of the above? Out the window. Turns out testifying is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Not only is the rapist I helped catch last year not locked away for the rest of his life, he’s on the loose and looking for me. Oh yeah, and it’s definitely harder being without Ty than being with him, especially when I have to watch him with someone else. Welcome to my world.

REVIEW

Of the three stories in this series, Cassie and Ty’s story was far more darker than the others. A suspenseful mystery that highlighted not only the fun side of spring break but also the dangers that lurk, it was intense. This book continued along the same lines.

With the trial that would hopefully see Stan behind bars for a long time, I felt a little sorry for Cassie that she had to face things alone. Even with everything that had happened between her and Ty I was a little surprised that he didn’t reach out to her sooner, and it was only really when he was “forced” to be there for her that he really showed any interest. I realize that she probably broke his heart by ending things, but I would have thought that his protective instincts would have led him to her before all the drama.

I liked that this book wasn’t solely focused on Cassie and Ty and their relationship problems. It was filled with suspense and there was a bit of mystery as to whom Stan’s accomplice was. Under the circumstances it was also easy to see how Cassie and Ty rekindled the love that had never really stopped between them.  It was an exciting read.
