The bed sank, and Naomi felt him behind her. She couldn’t let him see her like this, like some love-struck teenage girl who’d just found out the quarterback of the football team only liked her as a friend. She had to be strong.

“Are you crying?”

She bowed her head, glad the shadows hid her face. “No.” Good. Her voice sounded strong, not like the driveling mess she felt like.

“Turn around.”

“No.”

“Let me see your face, Naomi.” He moved closer to her.

“Go away.”

Bear barked, warning him to keep his distance.

He reached around her, brushing her arm as he patted Bear’s head. “Please.” His warm breath blew on her neck.

The tenderness in his voice tore at her and her eyes grew wet. She took a couple of breaths, calming herself before she spoke. “I get it. I’m a job for you, and you felt sorry for me.” She stroked Bear’s fur. “I’ll be fine.”

She took another deep breath, placed Bear on the floor, and took a pillow off the bed. She couldn’t stay in the same room with him. It was too much. She liked him better when he was being a smartass—that she could handle. She needed to get back to the bathroom to be alone. Maybe she could sleep in there. The bathtub didn’t look too bad in spite of the dark ring around it and the questionable green stuff on the walls.

Lash grasped her hand, and she bit down on her lip, fighting back the strong feeling that bubbled up inside her. She felt herself weaken as she sank back down on the bed, keeping her head down. Don’t make me look at you. I’ll break if I do.

Gently, he placed a hand under her chin and lifted her face to his. His eyes swam with tenderness. She couldn’t hold back anymore, and she closed her eyes.

“My beautiful Naomi. Please don’t cry.”

Soft lips pressed against her forehead and lingered, her breath catching at the heat of his touch. The roughness of his chin grazed her skin as he kissed one eyelid, then the other. Her chest rose and fell as his lips slid down to her cheek, her nose, and then the other side of her face, chasing away the tears.

His nose glided along her cheek and paused over her mouth, hovering, his frantic breath lingering with hers. She was afraid to open her eyes. Afraid of what she’d see when she looked at him. Then his voice, so soft, as if he was speaking from inside her mind, whispered, “Naomi.”

She opened her eyes and her breath hitched at the raw emotion on his face. The wall he kept around his soul, his true self, disappeared. This was the real Lash—vulnerable, sweet and passionate. She couldn’t deny the truth that was sitting in front of her, tugging at her, consuming her. She loved him.

“Fight me.” His voice rasped as a hand swept over her hair. “I shouldn’t be doing this. I don’t want to hurt you.”

His words warred with the longing on his face. He wanted her as much as she wanted him. Then she realized what he was asking of her. He was an angel. He was on his way home. After tonight, she would never see him again. The thought crushed her. In the back of her mind, she knew there would be an end. He couldn’t be with her forever. The end was soon, and this may be their last time together. Tonight, she’d follow her heart, even if it meant her heart, her soul, would be left bleeding in the end. If all they had was one night, one moment—she’d take it.

“You won’t.” She leaned in, her mouth brushing lightly over his lips.

He quivered. “I can’t stop myself anymore.”

He slowly pressed his lips to hers, and a flood of euphoria rushed to her heart. She weaved her fingers into his hair, surprised by how soft it was, and pulled his head closer, deepening the kiss. His hands slid down her shoulders to her back and she felt herself falling back onto the bed. When he pressed himself against her, heat surged through her body.

His kisses were soft and deep as if they were his last. Her hands went beneath his shirt while her fingers skimmed over his back, feeling every muscle, so smooth and hard. Closer. Tighter. She held on to him, never wanting to let go, knowing in the back of her mind that she would soon have to.

His lips trailed inch by inch down her throat. Tasting. Savoring. Each kiss whispered the words she longed to hear—I love you. She floated, helpless, on a tidal wave of emotions. Bliss. Despair. Both, one and the same in the knowledge that she couldn’t hold on to him no matter how hard she tried.

Desperate to feel his skin against hers, she took hold of the edge of his shirt. Taking her lead, he pulled the shirt over his head and hovered over her for a moment, darkened eyes holding hers. Longing. Yearning. She was breathless. She reached out, brushing a thumb over his unshaven cheek, drinking him in, committing his handsome face to memory.

She reached out to her dream, drawing it close. Lash. Lash. Her kisses grew hungry, fervent. She couldn’t get enough. As if hearing her needs, he lifted her up and helped her take off her clothes. He stopped, awestruck, as he took in the sight of her. His finger traced the outline of her collarbone from shoulder to shoulder, trailing in a “Z” down between her breasts. Trembling. Quivering. She reached out to pull him to her again.

“Wait. Let me look at you.” Darkened eyes drank her in. “So beautiful.”

Hot wet lips moved down her throat, and she moaned as they continued to move down. Fevered hands caressed her breasts. Pulsing. Throbbing. She needed him.

She tugged at his jeans zipper, when his hand stopped hers. “Are you sure?”

“Yes,” she breathed. She’d never been so sure of anything in her life.

When he pressed himself into her, she closed her eyes and wrapped her legs around him. Their bodies moved in rhythm, and she felt herself go higher and higher, until she was near the edge.

“Naomi. Look at me.”

Her eyes locked with his; in that one moment, they were suspended in time. There were no rules, there were no goodbyes; it was only the two of them in their own personal Heaven.

Gripping his arms, she cried out and arched her back, surrendering. He tightened against her and cried out. Ecstasy washed over his face, and she was spellbound. Heaven. Hell. Her heart broke knowing she’d never see it again.

— L.G. Castillo’s Author Secret —

Not sure how much of this is a secret, but I'm a HUGE Olivia Newton-John fan.  When I was a kid, my friends were into bands like Van Halen, Motley Crue or Guns N' Roses, so needless to say, I kept this a secret.

“I won’t let anything else happen to you, Riley,” he rumbled as if in response to the furrow in my brow, one hand grasping the hair at the back of my skull as he pulled my lips down to his. That was when I felt it—the blistering fury that seethed just beneath his calm exterior, causing his fingers to tremble where they flexed on the bare skin of my hip. He needed the willingness of my body as much as I needed to feel the strength of his.

Cradling his face in my hands, I lengthened the kiss, turning the hungry need of his lips into a slow exploration. He fought it at first, his teeth grating along the swell of my lower lip, but I ignored his insistent pull. Running my fingers through his thick hair, I rocked against him in a slow undulating movement, letting him know how much I wanted him, but that I wouldn’t rush the moment. Soon enough he gentled, letting me show him where and how I liked to be touched, how I liked to feel his teeth against my throat while his fingers danced between my thighs.

The minutes stretched out between us, peppered with gasping sighs and desperately questing fingers until I was fit to burst with the need to have him inside me.

“I need you now,” he growled, pulling at the elastic of my underwear.

“I know,” I whispered, sinking down into him.

Chapter One

London, February 1623

The skin offered little resistance to her teeth. A bit of pressure and the blood started to flow. Tangy, sweet warmth filled her mouth and coursed down her throat all the way to her stomach, comforting, soothing the fire in her veins. This was heaven. She was dead, and this her reward.

Her racing mind calmed as she drank. Thoughts organized themselves. Killing should be harder. Less pleasurable. Every second she drank this man’s blood drained away his life. There was no question of stopping. She craved every drop. The boning of her stays pinched as she drank faster.

The flow of blood thinned. The vein was running dry. The breathing beneath her slowed. A few more swallows and the life she held in her hands would be no more. A few more gulps and maybe her lust would be sated.

His body hit the ground with a hollow thump.

“Did you get your fill, my girl?”

The blood made its way through her body, lulling her into contented drowsiness. Obscuring fog consumed her mind. She knew the man talking to her, but his name was just out of reach.

“Yes. Thank you.”

“Of course. Anything for you.” His blue eyes scanned her face as if he expected to find something. She didn’t know what.

The body at her feet laid askew before the crackling fire, limbs sprawled in unnatural positions. Gray eyes stared blankly ahead. The only life in them came from the reflected firelight dancing in their glassy depths. She felt a chill and looked away. “I think I want to sleep now. Just for a little while.”

The blue-eyed man nodded, beaming. “Yes, my child. You must sleep.” In one swift movement, he lifted her into his arms. As he carried her out of the room, she couldn’t help staring over his shoulder at those eyes. Those gray, lifeless eyes that, only moments before, had gazed at her with the strangest expression.

— Caethes Faron’s Author Secret —

Amaia, the heroine of Haunting Echoes, my book in the box set, is a vampire and really hates humans. My secret is, she was created while I worked at Disney World and was an outlet for my feelings while dealing with crazy guests. Dreaming about her and her disdain for humans got me through more than a few shifts!

I woke from a fitful sleep with a loud clap of thunder that shook the room. I sat up, struggling to catch my breath, when I saw someone at the foot of the bed. “Marren?”

“I’m here.”

“What are you doing at the foot of my bed?” I said, impatient and still angry.

“I want you to see me . . . what I am,” he replied as if he was surrendering to something he didn’t want to do.

My heart raced. Questions and warnings rang in the back of my mind. One thing overwhelmed them all. Need. A need to know, a need to see, a need to keep him with me because I was too proud to admit I was too scared to be alone.

I moved slowly, crawling on top of the blankets and to the edge of the bed. I stood on my knees and took deep breaths to calm myself as lightning and thunder crashed and rain pelted the stone balcony. I reached with trembling hands and pulled the sheers apart slowly. Marren stood on the other side of the bench, patiently waiting for my reaction. He stood perfectly still, like a statue belonging in the ballroom with the other races, long fallen into myth and legend. Lighting flashed across his face, and I realized why he was so afraid.

I froze. Partly in terror and partly in awe. “You’re a werewolf.”

“Are you afraid of me?” he asked with uncertainty.

Of course, I was afraid. It wouldn’t be natural otherwise. I couldn’t tell him that. “No. More like . . . mesmerized.”

I leaned over the bench, reached out my hand and touched his face. Soft and smooth skin returned my touch, just as with the human part of him. My fingers traced the changes, moving over the rises and falls of his features. Goosebumps rose on my arms and trickled down my spine. Another flash of lightning shone on his face, his eyes were closed.

“You’re beautiful,” I whispered.

“You—you don’t think I’m a monster?”

I laughed under my breath. “How could I?”

“This is what I am. If living a life with me is what you really want, you will need to eventually make the change as well,” his words echoed soundlessly through my mind, as well as the urgency within them.

I dropped my hand and sat back on my legs. “Before I can think about that, give me some answers.”

He nodded slowly.

“How old are you?”

“Old enough to have seen the changes in this world,” he spoke with sadness in his words.

“Does that mean you will you live forever?”

“Theoretically, yes.”

“So if I decide not to make the change, then . . .”

“It will kill me when you eventually die.”

“Why would my death kill you?” I fought a losing battle. Instead of getting answers, I found more questions.

His mouth opened as if he was going to answer, but then he closed it, looking out the window. Worry creased his brow.

I tried a different approach, “Is that the decision you warned me of?”

“I wouldn’t want you to rush into something like this. It takes time. With the company that’s coming, you’ll need to make that decision sooner than I had hoped.”

I climbed atop the bench and then stepped to the floor to stand in front of him; my knees were stiff from sitting on them. “When?”

“The decision will need to be made by tomorrow night.”

“What happens if I say no?”

“I would rather not think about that but considered that a possibility.”

“And?” I asked.

“I’m hoping you won’t,” he said.

“Why is it important to you for me to say yes?”

“Because, my world was never complete until you were a part of it, and you are my heart song.”

My mind emptied of everything. Every question, every thought and argument, even logic left my mind. Not once did I expect to hear words like his. I was never anything to anyone. My own father didn’t even want me, and yet, Marren did. The whirlwind of my life seemed less chaotic with him. He calmed the destructive force that claimed so much of me, and when I thought about not having him around, my heart hurt. I’ve always been told persistence wins over patience. I didn’t realize how true that was until now.

My decision was made.

I lifted my hands to his chest, his heart thumped against my touch. I inched close enough for his breath to blow over my neck and shoulders. His lips pressed into my forehead, but I could tell he was holding back.

I slid my hands around his neck and pulled his lips to mine. Fire pulsed through my veins, setting every nerve ending ablaze. Everywhere his hands touched, tingled like tiny bolts of lightning. Slowly, his arms wrapped around me as our kiss deepened. My feet left the floor as he carried me to the side of the bed, lying me down. His mouth traced the edge of my jaw and the length of my neck. He pulled away, letting his breath flow over my skin in warm waves.

“Are you sure this is what you want?”

“Yes.”

— Samantha LaFantasie's Author Secret —

I’ve had a gun pointed at my head before.

I’m not sure why this came about, but it happened. Every now and then I think about what could’ve been had the gun gone off. Was it loaded? Was it real? I will never know.

It was dark out. I lived in a housing community across from an old Air Force Base. I was home alone.

Then, out of the blue, I heard someone at the sliding glass door. As I approached it, I saw the person there and instantly recognized who he was. Though he was a thug, he was a good friend . . . or so I thought.

I pulled the door open with a smile on my face. He smiled back then pulled the gun at me and aimed it right at the center of my forehead. While waiting for him to pull the trigger, two others stepped out from behind him to look at my face. They laughed, and so did he as he put the gun down.

I don’t remember much of what happened after that, but I lived to tell another story, and that’s all that mattered to me.
