“So, we need to talk—” I tried to say, but he captured my mouth before I could finish the sentence. Aiden’s kisses had all the intensity of a man who’d finally found what he’d been sorely deprived of. His lips begged for more contact as he backed me up against the bookshelves.

“Go ahead, talk. I’m listening.” He left my lips only to taste new delights as he worked his mouth down to the crook of my neck. His hands came up and cupped my breasts through my t-shirt.

Aiden was all heat and need and pent up aggression. He nipped possessively at the hollow of my neck, making me squirm with delight. That man knew exactly how to get my motor running! My body throbbed with need for him and warmth pooled between my thighs.

“You’re not saying anything,” he teased as he pulled back. Fire blazed in his eyes and he burned a trail all the way down my body. “Didn’t you want to talk?”

“Talking is overrated, just fuck me,” I panted and gripped his pants, pawing at his belt buckle. Suddenly, it felt like there were too many layers of clothes between us, but it only took me a moment to rectify that.

“That’s my girl.” Aiden seized my hips and lifted me up in a smooth motion. His strength added to my desire. He carried my weight easily while his large hot hands gripped my ass under my skirt.

I wrapped my legs around his torso and gripped his head, weaving my fingers into his dark thick hair, and ground myself into him.

Aiden growled his appreciation; the vibrations of his chest rumbled through my body. He twirled around toward his desk, swept a hand across it and sent his pencil cup, notebooks, and stapler crashing to the floor.

Though he was furious with need, he laid me out gently across the now-empty desk. Desire smoldered in his pitch-black eyes. He slipped his hands under my skirt, hooked my underwear with his fingers, and dragged them down. I kicked off my fur-lined boots and flung my panties off with them. Aiden smirked and grabbed my ankles. He lifted them to his shoulders and smoothed his hands down my bare legs.

Both rough and gentle, soft and hard, he was a sexy conundrum that had my body aching for his next move.

— Katie Salidas’ Author Secret —

It’s no secret that I have a love of all things paranormal. Witches, Werewolves, Vampires, Shifter, and anything else you want to throw at me. I write stories about people becoming these things, leaving their old lives behind for the unknown and the potential power that is associated with them.

There is so much excitement there, and danger. Nothing like what you find in your day to day life. And that’s the appeal. That’s what, I think, draws us all as readers to these stories. They take us out of our comfort zone and we become a character that is capable of so much greatness.

It sounds like a dream come true, right? Power, immortality, a front row seat to the underworld that mere mortals can only dream of. Not to mention the requisite hot alpha you end up with. Show of hands… how many book boyfriends do you have lined up? Exactly… the more animal, the better, am I right?

But all this excitement and adventure comes at a cost.

See, there’s the secret part. The cost of actually doing it might be too high, and though I write about people willing to do it. If given the choice, I would not be able to actually go through with it, if given the chance.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to be tempted away into another life, but duty and love would keep me locked here in the mortal realm. I could never leave my kids. They’re too little and innocent, and let’s face it… If I became a vampire… Uh, no! Or a werewolf? I could definitely see accidents happening when my toddlers call out the beast from within… If you have kids, you know how trying toddlers can be on anyone’s patience.  No matter how tempting… at least for the next 18 or so years… I’d have to pass up on the opportunity.  Now, If some hot Alpha wolf wants to tempt me away when my kids are old enough to care for themselves… come at me! I’d make a lovely cougar.

I know, I know… Not the dirty little secret that you might have been expecting. I wish I had dirty little skeletons in my closet to air out for your entertainment. My characters get into far more trouble than I have, and that is probably why they have such exciting lives. I live vicariously through them. So, in a way I do get to become a vampire and werewolf, without having to worry about the repercussions.

And for my contribution to the Secret Worlds boxed set, I provide just that. Fallon, a headstrong girl who has to make that very decision herself. Leave everything human behind and become mate to the Alpha of the Olde Town pack, or say good-bye to the hottest guy she’s ever laid eyes on. Decisions decisions…. Whatever will she do?

Find out if she takes the plunge into the supernatural realm. Read Moonlight in the Secret Worlds boxed set.

Abruptly my back overheats with the awareness of curious eyes on it. Footsteps startle me—sturdy and resolute. The soft slap, slapping of boots rousing up sand.

“What’s happening to you, Ruby?” asks a familiar husky voice. “Why are you always standing out here without your mask?” Blane steps in front of me. His hazel eyes, flecked with gold and brown, sear my skin. He picks up my mask. “You already got burned once.”

“I didn’t know you cared,” I tease. “Do you?”

He shrugs. I know Blane can’t answer those kinds of questions. Instead of answering, he places the mask on my head. His fingers, fastening the straps at the back of my head shoot fire through me. His body, so close makes my chest swell with confusion and desire. Why am I so sensitive to his presence?

I press him. “Why do you always stare at me from the window? Why do you ask me questions with your eyes and not your mouth? What do you want with me, huh?”

He stands his ground, his boots planted apart. His silent confidence angers me.

“I asked you what you wanted. Do you want to kiss me? Huh?” I ask with more fury than I intended.

He lowers his head and kicks at the sand. “Why are you such a tease? You’re either too remote or flirting in an angry way. What happened to you at that place, Ruby? What did they do to you?”

“What did they do to me? Hah! What didn’t they do to me?” I barrel on, looking over Blane’s shoulder at one of the dunes. “That man you saw claimed me when I was five. He beat me.” I hold up my bad hand. “He cut off three of my fingers. He would’ve assaulted me if I hadn’t run!” I pause to catch my breath. My knees are ready to cave. As at peace as I was before, the memory of what I went through renders me a furious, quaking catastrophe in seconds. “And you have the nerve to ask me why I’m such a mean tease?” That hurts. Armonk has said as much, about me being seductive. But why should I tell Blane that he’s the second guy to tell me this? “I have a question for you,” I fire back. “Why are you such a brute?”

He flinches. Hurt dims the light in his eyes. Is that what we are to each other? Punching bags? No, I won’t play that game. There’s good in Blane. He dragged Thorn and me in to safety when we passed out in the sun. He saved me from Stiles that night. He defended me against Jan. Blane might be a brute but brute force is sometimes what’s required. And I sense that there are more layers below.

“I had to get strong to survive,” he whispers, so low that I need to move closer to hear him. “I couldn’t protect my brother, Percy. I couldn’t protect my family. I vowed to always be stronger after that.”

“You got too strong, too mean,” I tell him.

“You too, Ruby.”

“I don’t try to be a tease. I learned it to survive. How do I unlearn it?”

“I don’t know. Be more aware of when you do it?” He sighs. “I don’t mean to be a brute either. I hate that you see me that way.”

“You helped me get rid of Stiles,” I admit. “And I never really told you what that meant to me.”

“No, you went off with Armonk.”

“You didn’t give me a chance because you stormed off so fast,” I tell him.

“Do you like that guy with the arrows?” This would be funny if it were someone else unable to say Armonk’s name. With Blane it makes me sad because he knows I like the both of them.

I raise my head to Blane’s solid neck, to the honey-brown stubble on his chin and up to his eyes—locking gaze-to-gaze, fire-to-fire. “I do like Armonk, as a friend.” Why am I admitting all of this? Why?

I feel Blane’s heart beating out of his suit. Or is it my heart that’s beating out of my chest? He steps closer. His warm sea apple breath drifts onto my cheeks. I breathe him in. This is dangerous madness. He reaches for me, hungrily, desperately. Our masks bump awkwardly against each other as we kiss. The taste of his tongue is as delicious as the sun pouring down. Wrapping my arms around his head, I run my fingers through his soft, cropped hair. Oh. My. God, what is happening to me?

“Ruby,” he moans. “Ruby.”

In a panic, I pull away and run. As I look toward The Greening I see Vesper, staring out the window at me. What have Blane and I done? Armonk will know, everyone will know and I’m not ready for that.

Not at all.

One thing I don’t tell a lot of people is that I’m a bit of a music groupie. It’s embarrassing somehow. I mean, I’m no stalker... I just truly admire musicians, and feel, as a writer, a keen artistic kinship with them. Okay, the confession: I’ve gone backstage and partied with Buddy Guy (the great blues man), John McLaughlin (fusion rock), John Mellencamp, The Hooters, Jamar Rogers (on the Voice), and most recently, the entire troupe from American Idol 2014. Don’t believe me? I have photos!

Sample – Shiftless Sample
"That's Chase's dog," Keith explained, sitting down beside the alpha werewolf to give him a belly rub. "He's harmless," my nephew continued, as if my reaction was due to fear of being bitten by a strange dog. I wished a dog bite was the only thing I had to worry about.

The day was already off to a bad start, but I figured I'd better ignore the alpha and barrel on through. "So..." I stretched out the word, trying to figure out how to begin. "If your mother was still alive, she'd be the one telling you this," I started. "Well, it really should be your father, but..."

"...He's clueless," Keith finished for me. "I really hope this isn't all a lead up to telling me about the birds and the bees, Aunt Terra, because I promise, I've heard that before."

The kid's charisma was already shining through despite his teenage gawkiness, and I figured Keith would be putting his sex-ed knowledge to use much earlier than the average teenager. I barely resisted the urge to pat his tousled hair, and I smiled despite myself, imagining Keith's reserved father trying to give his son the other kind of talk. Dale would get so embarrassed about the subject that he wouldn't even be able to start the conversation. "I'll bet you didn't learn about the birds and the bees from Dale," I retorted, laughing at the image.

"He bought me a book," Keith confirmed. My nephew moved his attention up to Wolfie's ears, which apparently were in dire need of scratching from the expression on the wolf's face. Or maybe the alpha was just amused at my fumbling attempt to educate my nephew.

"So, right, not about the birds and the bees," I continued. "I guess I should start out by telling you that your grandfather isn't a very nice guy, which is why your mother ran away from home so young. I did too." That had finally gotten Keith's attention and he watched me as I paced nervously in front of him. After another bout of extended silence (and pacing), I figured I might as well just spit it all out. "I guess I said that wrong," I corrected myself. "Your grandfather isn't a very nice werewolf."

It was only after Keith started laughing that I realized the kid didn't believe a word I was saying. Okay, sure, he probably believed his grandfather was an asshole, but tossing out the term "werewolf" with no lead-in had made my nephew think I was making a joke. And as much as I tried to bring him back down to reality, Keith had determined we were kidding around.

"That's a good one, Aunt Terra," he gasped finally, when his belly laughs were all played out. "But what did you really drag me up here to say?"

"I..."I began, but Wolfie had decided to take matters into his own hands. Or, paws, rather. The werewolf stood and walked a couple of feet away from Keith, then shifted into human form.

If you haven't met me in person, you probably don't know that my most distinctive feature is my perpetually bare feet. My father likes to talk about how I used to run barefoot over gravel as a kid, and although my soles aren't quite so tough anymore, I've still walked along Tasmania's Overland Track, Britain's Pennine Way, and our own Appalachian Trail without shoes on. Just yesterday, I decided it was more fun to walk through a swamp barefoot than to don heavy boots, and my introduction to one of my neighbors came when he tracked my unshod footprints through the woods thinking he'd found a bear...only to stumble across a human instead. Back in college, I was the barefoot girl, although I did toe the line and abide by the rules to be shod in science labs and in the cafeteria. So, if you meet me, don't look at my face. Look down at my feet!

– Sample – PURGATORY, a place DOWN UNDER –Sample –

I spread out like a shadow on pavement under the feet of the unsuspecting woman working her corner in the seven-hundred block of South Orange Blossom Trail. Her name is Jane, and I will be wearing her by morning.

As she drags me along, I watch, listen, learn . . . and I think about Gaire. Although I knew something was different about him, I'd never, for a moment, expected Gaire to be a wendigo. Damn, talk about having a penchant for bad boys. That little proclivity might chalk my 'no killing humans' rule up to multiple charges of aiding and abetting before this insanity ends. And it will end, badly, if I don't get Gaire out of my doppelganger head. I know I should just forget him—I'm sure he's forgotten me—but Gaire is the first and only being who has made me feel real, alive, and, well, human. I'll be damned if I'm giving up on that.

As I stare up at Jane from the pavement, I'm thinking how perfect this chick would be. I could head back to Leesburg, she would stay in Orlando on her street corner, and our paths should never cross. Unless it's in a morgue somewhere—a street-walker's life is a hard one.

In her early twenties, Jane is blonde and tan, wearing a lewdly short skirt and a lacy bra barely covered by a leather vest. Black boots with four-inch heels caress the undersides of her knees as she struts toward a car pulling up to the curb a few yards down from the streetlight on her corner.

I cozy up closer as Jane leans toward the black sedan, filling the window with the contents of her lacy bra.

Both hands now on the window of the car door, Jane is doing her thing, enticing, pimping her carte du jour, negotiating à la cart—palatable little hors d'oeuvres or entrées off the full-service menu—and distracting, while she slowly removes the pistol at her back, reaches down, and slides it into her boot.

I slither upward off the pavement, over the front tire, another moving shadow on a street accustomed to shadows.

I made G-strings and fancy outfits for strippers at a bar called the Booby Trap in Winter Park, Florida. Going inside, stepping into the bowels of the dressing rooms was exhilarating and I secretly wished I had the guts to claim a pole, join the girls, tease and titillate. I loved the seedy environment, and smoky atmosphere, laced with seduction and desire.
