CHARACTER BIO
J. P. Moore’s newest horror/fantasy novel, Sigils of the Old God, is now available from Dragon Moon Press. Sigils tells the story of Jacob, an assassin who serves a mysterious force that slumbers beneath the 19th century city of Jamesport, Rhode Island. Jacob finds himself in the center of an ancient war for the truths of a hidden history, and for the powers that sit at the very heart of the planet. Moore is also the author of the award-winning Toothless, a genre-bending and spellbinding zombie apocalypse novel set in the Dark Ages.
Below, he shares some biographical sketches from his most recent novel.
Discovery represents a central theme in Sigils of the Old God. Jacob has to learn the true nature of the world around him, and the characters who inhabit it. Each page brings new revelations. They tell the backstory of The Historian, a deformed oracle who squats in the squalor of the abandoned fish market. Or, they reveal the true identity of Theresa, a woman who lives among and is revered by the odd folk of the swamp marshes. Or, they lead Jacob to understand the importance of Isabella, the captive of an apocalyptic coven that has taken over the women’s college, using its mansion as a base for hatching their plans.
The novel holds a lot of this information close to the vest, so I don't want to reveal too much here. With all of that, though, Jacob himself is a pretty open book at the start of chapter one.
Jacob spent his childhood wandering the desert of West Texas. His father was a sheriff in a frontier outpost. Jacob carried that man’s pistol and holster, along with his mother’s quilt and vivid memories of his younger sister, all the way to Jamesport, Rhode Island. He left behind nothing to follow a mysterious call to travel to that New England city. A tragic accident had taken his sister's life, while a plague had claimed his parents.
In Jamesport, he quickly fell into the service of Sam and Papaya, mystics who paid him handsomely to take the lives of those Jamesport denizens wandering too deeply into the occult of a force known only as The Old God. At first, Jacob killed vagrants babbling in the alleys of the city’s Portuguese neighborhoods. But there would be other victims--wives of the wintering New York industrial elite, lawyers and officials, and even professors at the local women’s college.
Each job brought him closer to understanding that his life was not what he thought it was. He would look at himself in the mirror, likening his appearance to that of a crazed ex-Confederate. Unkempt strands of blonde hair dropping from beneath the brim of his Stetson. A black denim trench coat. And, his father’s pistol and holster. His questions, though, would soon run much deeper than merely attempting to track down his own ebbing sanity. History, he would learn, was a lie. An ancient war was raging all around him. His world was about to turn itself upside down.
There are many secrets to Jacob’s past that he, and the readers, need to uncover. Sigils doesn't solve all of the mysteries. Each answer brings a new and tantalizing question to the fore. Jacob’s world is a puzzle, and none of the pieces seem to offer a flat edge.
Rest assured, though. Other books will tackle those mysteries. In time, Jacob and his descendants will learn all they sought to learn about the War of the Old God.
And much more than they wanted to learn.
About the Author
J. P. Moore lives and writes in southern New Jersey. Though his characters would feel right at home in the dark and mossy tracts of the Jersey Pine Barrens, the setting that he enjoys with his wife and three children is a long way from the worlds of his novels and stories. Moore's settings are on the brink. Their histories are lost, or misunderstood. Their futures are uncertain. All of the heroes are gone. Only the unlikely heroes are left.
