“Do you enjoy the view?” King Edric asked.
“The rains have made the gardens bloom, and it warms my heart to see it so.”
“It is good to know that the gardener approves of the work.”
Cyrene laughed lightly. “I have not gardened in a month’s time. I fear I can no longer call myself a gardener.”
She remembered when she had told the king of her interest in gardening at the last feast day almost a week ago. After that dance, Queen Kaliana added a list of plants to her assignment, forcing her to reread every page she had already dredged through for information. It had wasted two entire days.
“Perhaps I could change that,” he offered.
He directed her down the staircase and into the courtyard below lit solely by the setting sun in the distance.
Her stomach churned at the thought of him offering assistance to any of her needs. It was like what she had read in her children’s books of the tales of Leifs, and how one request would be necessitated by a much larger sacrifice. Her biggest sacrifice at the present moment was time. She wanted nothing more than to finish her work on agriculture and prove that she could get moved somewhere that involved traveling…and adventure.
“On the contrary, My King, I am fully enthralled in my Affiliate duties, and believe that gardening would only distract me from my work.”
“You cannot spare one afternoon to spend in my gardens?” His blue-gray eyes searched her face. “If you have half the green thumb you suggest, then it would be delightful to have you on the grounds.”
She swallowed. “I really have much work to accomplish before we go on Processional.”
“I could speak to the Queen and request it be lessened,” he whispered into the evening air.
“No!” It was the first time he had ever admitted to discussing her with the Queen. Hearing him admit it aloud made her voice come out strangled.
Cyrene missed her footing on the pebble path and stumbled forward a pace. Edric steadied her. He turned his body to face her in the middle of the garden, and her breath caught at the sight of him in the setting sun.
“You do not wish me to speak to the Queen?”
“I spoke out of turn. Please forgive me.”
“I cannot forgive that which I do not understand. Did the Queen somehow offend you?”
Cyrene shook her head. “I fear that the Queen does not…like me.”
Edric laughed softly, taking one of her hands in his own. “Oh Cyrene, I believe that the Queen likes no one but herself.”
Cyrene found that she, too, could laugh at his comment.
“Now, tell me what the Queen has done to make you believe that she dislikes you.”
“It’s nothing, my King.” She turned her face away from his. She couldn’t possibly tell him the real reason.
“Enough to infuriate you, which is enough for me.”
When she looked back up into his blue-gray eyes she felt that same magnetic pull between them. Somehow she had not realized how close they were standing. His hand felt warm against her bare skin. His body only a few inches away from her. His breath hot on her face. Her heart contracted in her chest, and she forced herself to respond.
“She speaks of…of your interference, as if…as if you…”
Time stretched between them, and she thought for a split second he might move even closer to her. She was rooted in place, captivated by his gaze.
“Yes?” His other hand drifted to her waist, and she was suddenly on fire.
Their breath mingled together as she murmured, “As if you favor me.”
“And do you think that?”
“I…”
“Yes?” he asked, stepping closer.
“I think you have your queen,” she breathed.

EXCERPT

Roth cleared his throat. “Shortie, look…look at your hand.”
Look at my hand? Why in the world would he be asking me to do that in the midst of all the cray?
“Do it,” he said quietly and too gently.
The dread exploded in my gut like buckshot, and my gaze dropped to my left hand. I expected to see the weird marbling of black and gray, a mixture of the demon and Warden that existed inside of me and a combination I’d become almost familiar with by now. My nails had lengthened and sharpened, and I could tell they were hard enough to cut through steel, as hard as my skin, but my skin…it was still pink. Really pink.
“What the…?” My gaze traveled to my other hand. It was the same. Just pink. My wings twitched, reminding me that I had shifted.
Zayne swallowed. “Your…your wings…”
“What about my wings?” I almost screeched, reaching behind me. “Are they broken? Did they not come out—” The tips of my fingers came into contact with something as soft as silk. My hand jerked back. “What…”
Stacey’s watery eyes had doubled in size. “Um, Layla, there’s a mirror above the fireplace. I think you need to look in it.”
I met Roth’s gaze for a second before I spun around and all but ran to the fireplace I was sure Stacey’s mom had never used. Clutching the white mantel, I stared at my reflection.
I looked normal, like I did before I shifted…like I was going to class or something. My eyes were the palest shade of gray, a watered-down blue. My hair was so blond it was almost white, and a mess of waves that went in every direction like usual. I looked like a colorless china doll, which was nothing new, except for the two fangs jutting out of my mouth. I wouldn’t show them off at school, but that wasn’t what caught my attention and held it.
It was my wings.
They were large, not as massive as Zayne’s or Roth’s, and normally they were almost leathery in texture, but now they were black…black and feathered. Like legit feathered. That soft, silky thing I’d felt? It had been tiny feathers.
Feathers.
“Oh my God,” I whispered at my reflection. “I have feathers.”
“Those are definitely feathered wings,” Roth commented.
I whipped around, knocking over a lamp with my feathered right wing. “I have feathers on my wings!”
Roth cocked his head to the side. “Yeah, you do.”
He was absolutely no help, so I turned to Zayne. “Why do I have feathers on my wings?”
Zayne shook his head slowly. “I don’t know, Layla. I’ve never seen anything like this.”
“Liar,” hissed Roth, shooting him a dark look. “You’ve seen that before. So have I.”

TEASER

Colton POV

“You have me alone. Now, start talking,” I said in a stony voice.
Madeline reached into her blue blazer and handed me a five-by-seven manila envelope. “Open it.”
I flipped it over, lifted the silver tab, and pulled out the stack of papers. My blood turned to ice when I took in the first photograph. It was of Paige and me on Hank’s property the night we’d scoped out his place. The image was dark and a tad pixelated. She and I were both holding flashlights and walking between two barns.
My gut coiled, but I kept my expression unreadable. “So what? We trespassed on private property.”
“There happens to be a reporter—Lexie West at The Murfreesboro Times—who is very interested in more details on my husband’s mysterious death. It doesn’t look good with Paige and you on my property weeks before my husband was murdered. She’ll run anything I tell her, Colton. You forget who runs this town.”
I was not threatened by her, so I told her, “Then, I’ll be sure to show her the images I have of my horse sperm in the refrigerator in your stables and the paperwork confirming the fire on my property was arson, committed by your husband.”
“Keep flipping,” she hissed.
The second picture was of Kyle, Jason, Damon, Blake, and me on the night when we’d gone to Hank’s estate and forced him to return what was rightfully mine.
I turned to the next image and immediately went rigid with uncontrollable fury. It was a close-up picture of Rusty’s laceration, followed by a close-up of Foster.
“You bitch,” I seethed.
Her laughter made me feel sick. “Keep going.”
The next images consisted of Ashlee Davis inside of Lovin’ Sweets, baking cookies and helping customers; Nancy Summers cooking in her kitchen and weeding her garden; Dave Summers working with his horses and herding cattle in the field.
My heart raced with each picture and its unspoken threat.
“I was originally here to chase Paige out of town…” Madeline trailed off for a brief second when my steely eyes met hers. “But after watching your face twist and writhe in pain, I’m glad I played a different angle.”
“What the fuck are you getting at, Madeline? Spit it out already. I’m not intimidated by some news reporter.” My patience was wearing thin. I was struggling not to line-drive her into the ground and wrap my hands around her neck.
“You have a grave weak spot, Colton, and I plan to decimate her by forcing her to endure losing everyone she loves, one by one, while I sit back and watch her misery consume her, destroy her, just as she did to me. You can’t protect her twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You can’t save her from me. She’s going to know what it feels like.” Her body shook violently with indignation. “She made my heart bleed, and I won’t accept anything less than the blood of hers in return.”
So, she wants Paige to live a life without me? That’s her punishment? I swallowed thickly. This woman knew nothing about me—that I would give my last dying breath to save Paige, that my love for her had no bounds. It was endless, unceasing.
I moved with agile speed and got right up in her face, causing a whirl of activity around me. Two handguns were pointed directly at either side of my temples. Blake was right on my heel, shouting something. I didn’t catch a word of it. My fury and focus were concentrated solely on one human being.
“You don’t scare me,” I told her as my lethal gaze roamed over the dark circles under her eyes, her stenciled thin brown eyebrows, and the harsh set of her cheekbones. “You should know, I’ve never hit a woman before in my life. It goes against how I was raised, everything I believe in—”
“Don’t be foolish, boy.” She laughed shallowly. “My bodyguards would be on you in a second.”
I didn’t doubt it. Ignoring her, I continued as though I hadn’t heard her, “I’ll be making an exception for you. So, make no mistake, the first chance I get, I won’t hesitate a split second before snapping your frail little neck.”
“I’m giving you one week to leave town for good, Kingston. Seven days and not a single more, or I’ll start picking off those dear to her, one by one, and you won’t be able to stop me.” She snatched the envelope out of my grasp. “And I promise you, I won’t be as delicate as my beloved husband was with this situation. I’m far more callous.” She retreated with her bodyguards and sneered, “Have a good afternoon, boys.”

Release Day Blitz: The House on Sunset by Lindsay Fischer

The House on Sunset
By-  Lindsay Fischer
Genre- Memoir/Women’s Fiction

Lindsay Fischer was once a high school English teacher with dreams stretching far outside the classroom. When her boyfriend of a year-and-a-half cheated on her, Lindsay found herself alone, looking online for a replacement. His name was Mike.

That’s where the nightmare started.

The House on Sunset is a memoir, a collection of reminiscences, scattering the ashes of two broken homes and putting them to rest. Each chapter offers a different glimpse inside the cycle of intimate partner violence, where honeymoon phases and traumas coexist.

Everyone could fall victim to abusers. This book bravely displays the reasons a quirky, twenty-something teacher would, and did.

The love that lies built?

Wine importer London Whitley dots her I’s and crosses her T’s. Her meticulous nature insulates her from fears that she might just be crazy, as in certifiably, medically nuts. When her almost ex-boyfriend winds up dead at her hands and she’s soon accused of importing counterfeit wines, London’s carefully constructed world begins to crumble. There’s help to be had, but only in the form of an imposing stranger who threatens her ruin.

Trevor Rathlen is lucky to have escaped his marriage to a murderess alive and merely indebted to men who think the exquisite London Whitley’s innocence is a façade. A computer security specialist by day and hacker by night, Trevor agrees to return the favor owed by learning London’s secrets. The task should be an easy one, except Trevor is short on trust, London is long on lies, and together they battle an infinite attraction.

“How?” Trevor asked near London’s ear. “How did you hurt your wrist?” Her eyeballs nearly rolled in their sockets. The deep baritone slipped past her lowered defenses, a massage for the ear canal. Trevor’s brand of coaxing made her want to answer.
“I fell.” As far as lies went, it wasn’t bad. She had fallen. She’d simply done so after being pushed and before doing some pushing of her own.
His grip slipped to her cast, and he lifted the souvenir between them. One hand moved to her elbow. The other outlined her half-covered fingers, never bending or hurting, just playing lightly.
“You like falling?”
Was that a joke? “No—”
“Because judging from this”—he stroked her pinky—“and what I saw today, you need to kick the habit.”
London didn’t consider herself overly sexualized. In fact, her ex had insinuated the opposite on too many occasions. “Give me more.” “So contained.” Dillon hadn’t insulted their intimacy, not exactly, but he’d felt compelled to question it. When she hadn’t let go quite like he’d wanted, the sex had gotten rough. Hard hands. Pinching fingers. Bruises, tiny and faint, where no one could see.
They’d been colleagues and lovers for over two years, and yet she’d always had to psych herself up for sex. If consistent, she’d been able to get away with once a week. Longer, and the nagging had started. “Please, baby.” “I can make it good.”
He hadn’t.
So she’d taken the initiative on a regular basis, telling herself Dillon deserved a good time and that, as his girlfriend, she should provide it. Family and friends had remained in the dark, while she’d blamed the rocky waters of her relationship on past voices of authority, letting them morph into present voices of reason.
Maybe her skittishness really did arise from an “inability to connect” and a “desire to be set apart from others.”
Except Trevor smelled so good she might stand in line for a piece of him, to bathe in the scent of soap and laundry detergent and man. His deep voice raised the fine hairs on the back of her neck and sent prickles to every spot he touched. If fingers could get goosebumps…
“I’ll help,” Trevor said, interrupting her mental summersaults. “No more dizziness. No more falling.”
Sometimes promises were nice, even if they couldn’t be kept. Against her better judgment, London melted farther into his chest. His throat undulated just above her hair. What if she tipped her head back and licked his Adam’s apple?
“Wanna know how?”
She bit her wandering tongue.
“First, I can feed you.” He scooped her into his arms and started out of the gym. “Then I can make you sleep.”
She stiffened. Nothing could give her rest. Blood stained her waiting dreams.
“Relax.” A slow squeeze compressed her hip, right at the juncture of her thigh. “I can touch you until your limbs go heavy and your eyes drift shut, until sleep becomes the only option.”
“Do you mean—?”
Yes.”
Sensuality she hadn’t seen through her fear fairly oozed out of him. Somehow through the gentleness, his manner conveyed he’d be happy to eat her alive, possibly in both good ways and bad.
Trevor stopped in the lobby. Without putting her down, he asked the woman manning the desk to take London’s locker number and combo and fetch her things. When London insisted she could get her own purse and towel, he hushed her and gripped tight.
“You’re trembling in my arms. You’ll fall and smack your head on the dressing room bench.”
Then, without further explanation, he turned and treated the bristling receptionist to a patient stare that said, “I’m waiting.” The woman resisted for a heartbeat, then shot both of them a scathing glance before leaving to do Trevor’s bidding, her tight yoga pants highlighting her perfect—holy mother of perfect—backside as she sashayed toward the locker room.
That ass was all apples, no applesauce.
Trevor didn’t acknowledge the tension or the view. He stood perfectly still with London suspended five feet from the floor, pretending the woman’s reaction had been about gym protocol.
If only. Realization hit, and London’s mouth dropped open. He’d spread that sensuality around.
“You two have dated,” London finally croaked, knowing she shouldn’t care.
Silence stretched as they waited. “Nope.”
“Friends with benefits, then.”
His head bent to meet hers. “No.”
“Ah,” London said knowingly, “benefits only.”
He didn’t bother to deny the obvious. Instead he pressed a kiss to the soft skin of her jaw. “Let’s call it ‘practice only.’”
“For what?”
He straightened and said two words.
For you.”
