Release Day Launch: Exclusive Excerpt + #Giveaway: The Taste of Her Words by Candace Knoebel

Today we have the gorgeous release day launch for The Taste of Her Words by Candace Knoebel! Check it out and grab your copy today!

Title: The Taste of Her Words

Author: Candace Knoebel

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Andrea was my first taste of love.

She was there throughout my childhood and into adulthood. Her words were a secret I wasn’t supposed to know. Truths and pain bled onto papers that shredded my innocence and carved a hole in my heart only she could fill.

Her words were my first kiss. They were the uneven breaths I took when I saw her, and my hands between her thighs inside the dreams she haunted. She was my best friend’s older sister and, even though she didn’t know it yet, she was the pen that would ink our destiny into the stars.

Dean tempted me to cross a line I never thought I would.

It had been so long since someone looked at me the way he did. Five years since his starry gaze caressed my words and I ran from a kiss I couldn’t shake. He was everything I should stay away from, but how could I resist the beautifully broken man whose touch stoked a fire within my soul?

Dean was the missing words to my fairy tale. The parchment I could safely put my most intimate thoughts to. But when secrets from the past catch up with us, how could our perfectly plotted ending survive?

I thought he was going to kiss me again when he leaned in. I wanted him to so badly. Maybe even wanted him to lay me down and take me here, in this tree where it all began, but he kept leaning and reached into the hole of the tree, pulling out the plastic box that held the words from my past. I watched him as my pulse pounded in my wrists. As he lifted the lid off and then shuffled through the folded shapes of papers.
“Here,” he said when he found what he was looking for. “This was my first taste of you.”
I took the unfolded piece of paper from him.
“Read it out loud. I want to hear your voice paint the words,” he said, seducing me with his lips and his eyes. His scent I swore I’d never forget. Heat and need flowed from every pore.
Spill into me, until all my holes are filled,” I recited, nerves flitting around in my body.
I looked over at him, at the danger in his eyes, and felt myself falling further and deeper than I ever fell. I’d never shared my words with anyone but him, and this was so much more than a touch or a kiss. This was his mind peeking into mine. His lips caressing my thoughts.
“Keep going.”
Intimacy stained his voice, the simple words taking on the shape of his body hovering over mine.
He took the lidded box from my lap and set it beside him. I watched. Not moving. Not breathing as his hand skimmed up my leg, following the curve of my inner thigh.
I couldn’t think straight.
Numb and spinning, make me feel.” I blinked fast, trying to catch my breath as his hand made its way between my legs, pressing firmly against me.
“Take your shirt off,” he commanded as a light drizzle started overhead, our breaths heavy and eager. It pattered against the tin roof, dulling the thudding sound of my heart beating in my ears.
Eyes locked on his, I took my shirt off, the cool from the rain a stark contrast from the heat brewing inside me. If he touched me, that would be it. I’d lose it.
This was a new layer of Dean I’d never experienced. The predatory look in his eyes immobilized me as I waited impatiently for his next move. For his perfect command.
I made mistakes. Too many to tell.”
He traced the outline of my breasts, making my skin tingle. Moved closer until I was on my back, the paper gone somewhere beside me.
Spill into me, until I love myself,” I finished, desire coating my voice.
He sealed the words with his lips, running his tongue over mine, tasting them. Loving them as his thumb traced the contour of my jaw. His breath was warm and filling as he took his time kissing me. Filling me and all my holes one kiss at a time.

“An origin is supposed to be the beginning of everything, but I fear it’s the end...for me... for all of us. My name is Jesca Sera, my reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again. “ ~ Jesca

Jesca’s life is full of averages; average childhood, average family, average part-time job with her best friend while she attends college close to home. Life is predictable, controlled, consistent, just the way she likes it, until the odds of averages turns against her and the oddity that that has remained dormant within her can no longer be contained.

Under the surface, Jesca’s strong-hold with reality is slowly slipping away. The seemingly harmless nightmares of her youth have turned sinister with ill intention and a realness meant to provoke true terror. The minor trick of the eye revealing a shadow or glimmer of light becomes vivid hallucinations intent on terrorizing her. Her fear reaches extremes when her professor’s presence coincides with her losing touch with reality, leaving Jesca questioning his stalking motives or influence on her shifting sanity. Confronting him is the only answer, and when she does, she is faced with an inconceivable explanation as to why her life is turning upside down; her role as a keeper of our world to save humanity from a potentially unstoppably apocalyptic catastrophe. Upon learning her purpose, Jesca is thrust into a new world of guardianship where training to use her new found abilities is the life-blood of survival for her and the tribe of guardians.

About: The Copula Chronicles, Origin, is a roller coaster ride straight into an unreality - speculative, yet plausible. It’s intent on spinning you around in the alternate history of origins of the new world Jesca has been thrust into, theories of genetic engineering and architects of a device meant to create travel within space and time through the cosmos. Make no mistake, your reality will be turned upside down with the techno-thriller plausibilities of what our world and its inhabitants could possess within. When all is said and done, you will find yourself planted in a new reality of weighty urban fantasy with profound thought-provoking conspiracies of the spiritual and scientific link to our existence and what our world may become now that Jesca’s new reality has been set into motion. Strap in for the ride.

“A descendant of the architect that pierced my reality, leaving me and the others the responsibiity to inherit the earth then save it from those we never fathomed existed among us. My name is Jesca Sera, my reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again.” ~ Jesca

The uncovered corruption and conspiracy upon our world paired with the impending catastrophic event honed in on our galaxy threatening invasion and evolution of our world lies in the hands of Jesca and the other guardians that have inherited the earth. The corruption of our world is spreading like wildfire, the between allies and enemies are being blurred, and Jesca’s growing attraction to the two men fighting for her heart could leave her vulnerable. Jesca and her fellow guardians’ fortitude is further pressed when their battle for earth takes them to the far reaches of Japan’s Aokigahara Forest, where the mysticism it covets brings weighted supernatural challenges they could never have anticipated. The predestined links she and the guardians share will either keep them safe or send them into a tailspin of sacrifices that may leave one if not all of them threatened.

About: The Copula Chronicles, Descend, pulls you deeper into the inherited reality Jesca and her new found clan of guardians are forced to surrender to in order to attempt salvation for humanity. The reality of genetic manipulation, ancient myths and theories, and the immediate threat of extra-terrestrial abduction and invasion are revealed in this second installment of the Copula Chronicles. Edge of your seat techno-thrilling conspiracies paired with dramatic mystery, suspense, and sacrifices are fulfilled in this spiraling global cataclysm Jesca and the guardians are faced with at every turn.

“With the breach of our world by those intent on invading it, a veil has been opened, giving way to the evolution we needed to stop. Now, I must ascend this veil that has released boundless evil into our world. This inheritance I posses is the key to a legacy bestowed to me; one that I have not yet discovered. My name is Jesca Sera. My reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again.” ~ Jesca

With the guardians attempt to stop the global invasion and apocalyptic evolution of the earth, two of the men in Jesca’s life have made the ultimate sacrifice in a daring attempt to save her from near death and keep the veil, a celestial barrier meant to separate our universe from all others, from remaining open. The fate of Ezra and Nate is dismal unless Jesca, Xander, and the other guardians can find a way to get them back, while destroying the evil that has seeped into our world, and sealing the ethereal veil between our universe and the evil that lie beyond it. As Jesca ascends beyond the veil, malignant illusions meant to turn allies against one another are at every turn in this parallel universe. One truth among the illusions is bestowed to Jesca; the celestial inheritance from her ancestors along with the prophecies of what is to come of the guardians and earth.

About: The Copula Chronicles, Ascend, takes you beyond the veil of our world and into one beholding the supernatural, spiritual, psychological and techno-thrilling futurism in terrifyingly perfect harmony.

“I have returned to an evolved earth. A place I no longer recognize. A self I no longer recognize. My name is Jesca Sera. My reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again. One thing is certain. I hold the blueprint of our salvation.” ~ Jesca

With Jesca’s return from beyond the veil with Xander, Nate, and Ezra, they are ushered into our evolved world having advanced years since their departure.
The earth’s remaining populous that survived the galactic intersection, the following climatic shifts, and the rigorous genetic manipulation has been stunted by the very beings Jesca and the others encountered beyond the veil. Humankind is being invaded, occupied, and destroyed under their invisible reign. The beings intent? To possess our world and stop Jesca and the other guardians from fulfilling the legacy that could save us all. We are left to hit the ground running upon their return as Jesca brings home new found knowledge of her ancient bloodline and the supernal legacy that has linked her family, the guardians, and the two men she has been torn between throughout her journey. With only Jesca’s visions of what this ancient legacy holds for them, the guardians are depending on the divining glimpses of her ancestry to put them on the path leading to salvation.
The question is, will the stakes be too high and the risk to great for Jesca and the guardians to fulfill their destiny?

About: The Copula Chronicles, Legacy, is the final installment in this edge-of-your-seat urban fantasy, science fiction fused series and Kimball holds nothing back in her arsenal of spine-tingling, mind-boggling, thought-provoking,mystery-seeking, and heart-pounding content.

The concrete turns to gravel, dirt and then rock as I enter a trailhead and descend into the dense woods. The sun shimmers on the fallen leaves and damp mulch. As sweat starts to run along my temple, the cool air hitting my face is refreshing. I focus on my breath, the ground, the music and the movement of my body. The sound of twigs breaking close by stops me in my tracks. Suddenly, the vibration I held in my body at the book store is filling me again, the humming in my ears returning. The dizziness doesn’t come, but my heart is pounding out of my chest and I can’t catch my breath. A flash of darkness out of the corner of my eye sets me on guard. Whatever it is, it’s not an animal; it stands upright. I turn my music off, pull my ear buds from my ears, and start running again. My legs take longer, stronger strides, stronger than I have ever taken before. The leaves beneath my feet are a blur, yet the sound of them crunching beneath my feet is like crushing plastic in a trash compactor. My arms work quickly to push away the branches blocking my path. All of a sudden, the feeling something was following me, closing in quickly rushes through my body. The same feeling I get in my nightmares and in the bookstore yesterday! Still running, I turn to look behind me. A blur of darkness in the land- scape catches my eye. It moves quickly, shifting around the wooded obstacles just as I am. The humming is even stronger now, clouding my thinking and my vision as I run through shrubs and branches, searching for an opening to clear the woods. Suddenly, there’s light piercing the darkness, a clearing. It has to be the one above the lake. I put more power into my pumping arms and stretching stride. The sun- light becomes brighter as the trees open their canopy, releasing me from the woods like a rock in a slingshot. As soon as I’m out, my body takes on a mind of its own and I turn toward the woods crouching low to the ground, as if I’m ready to combat this force stalking me. My heavy breathing is animalistic, unlike the panic I had in the woods, and for the life of me, I have no idea why I’m not getting the hell out of there. Forced to stare into the trail that expelled me, I fear that I’ll see some kind of monster any second, but nothing appears. Just rustling leaves on the rocky ground. My body, still detached from my mind, eager to flee, I pace in front of the opening to the woods as my breathing evens out as if I’m being held prisoner to the fear of what might attack me. The humming sound is diffusing quickly and the vibration is minimal compared to the tremor of my racing heart.

Callie
He grins at me and takes a step closer, reaching out for my hand and pulling it to his lips, kissing my knuckles. “Callie, I’m sorry,” he says, his breath feathering across my skin. “I didn’t mean what I said that day, back at the stadium.”
“Then why did you say it?”
He sighs and closes his eyes. “Because I’m an idiot. I saw that guy in his fancy suit with his expensive watch and gelled hair, and I was jealous. I looked at him and all I could see was Zach, and I panicked. You deserve the moon and the stars, and I’m never going to be that guy who can give you all those things.
“Tate, I don’t need someone to buy me pretty things. I had that, and you know what I learned? That it’s a very lonely existence. I had more jewelry than I knew what to do with, more shoes than I could wear in a month, but you know what I didn’t have? I didn’t have someone to share my day with as we lay in bed. I didn’t have someone whose kisses breathed life into my soul, and who made me feel alive.”
“And do you have that now?” he asks as he leans forward and rests his forehead against mine, his lips just millimeters away from my own. “Do you have someone who makes your heart want to keep beating?”
“I think I’m getting there. This guy I’m sort of dating is pretty incredible. You’d like him, he’s a smokejumper and a mechanic, and a pretty damn good kisser.”
“Only pretty good?”
“Eh, I’ve had better.”
“Is that so? We’ll see about that.”
His fingers fly out and grip the edges of my robe, pulling me closer to him as his lips press into mine. He nips at my bottom lip with his teeth and a moan slips out as my lips part, letting his tongue tease mine. Our tongues move against each other as my hands rake through his hair while pressing myself against his body, needing to be close to him. He smells like smoke and aftershave and it’s taking all my resolve not to rip off all this clothes and straddle him here on the kitchen floor. He pulls my bottom lip into his mouth and sucks on it making my head dizzy with need. When he pulls away, I whimper and I see a gleam of satisfaction in his eyes. His kisses set my heart on fire, and it’s the most delicious burn I’ve ever known.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

When the wind shifted, I knew this would be more than an eighteen-hour day. We all did. I went through the motions I’d been trained for, checking supplies, working the containment line, keeping up communications with air support and the ranger station. Trying not to get burned alive by the furious inferno that seemed intent on taking down all four million acres of the Oka-Wen National Forest… the usual. No time to think about anything else, no time to dwell on the months-empty condo back in Seattle or the fact that lately everything I did seemed like a prequel to my life actually starting. This fire wanted us, and she wasn’t giving up. Mother Nature had it in her to be the worst girlfriend you’d ever had.

“Damn, Foxy,” McDaniels panted, jogging up to my side. “Is today over yet or what?”

I cracked a grin at him, feeling the blistering heat from the sun and the fire mix into one and swirl around us as I hefted my chainsaw.

“Not by a landslide.”

McDaniels gave me the side-eye.

“Really? You wanna joke about landslides?”

“Hey now,” Sloane popped his head out of the crew buggy where he was listening intently to the handheld radio.

“None of that.”

She isn't mine. But I will damn us both to keep her...

The face that launched a thousand ships... I grew up knowing my destiny. Daddy pounded it in my head, my brother repeated it every day of my life. I was the only daughter of the Orsi crime syndicate, the pretty prize that would bring peace. My one job was to marry Callum Sheehan, the vicious head of the Irish mob in Chicago. I never questioned my future–until I saw him.

The man who was never meant to love her… I wasn’t going to the wedding. It’s shit that my brother does, things our father requires of the heir of the Sosa cartel. Not me. I’m the black sheep, the one Mama spoiled, and my father loves, but without the pressure of expectation. But Sheehan is too big a deal for me to blow off. And then I see her. The love that started a war… She isn’t mine. She will never be mine. I watch her fall apart when she thinks no one is watching. I watch her marry another man. I watch her bravery. And I don’t care who she belongs to or that it will start a war between our families. I will damn us both to possess her, and burn down the world to keep her.

A modern erotic retelling of Helen of Troy, and the epic love that brought an empire to its knees.

I step onto the roof, and pull out a cigarette. The sun has dropped, and the wind is ripping along, and even in the middle of summer, it’s cold.
“Fuck,” I mutter, trying to light the damn cigarette.
A dainty hand reaches out and lifts a lit cherry to my cigarette and I pull on it, smiling my thanks when it catches and nicotine and smoke flood my lungs.
I grin down at her, and freeze.
The girl in front of me is gorgeous.
Not the typical beauty that I fall into bed with so often. She’s small, almost a head shorter than me, with delectable curves, and sun-warm skin that begs to be touched. Long golden brown hair tumbles to the middle of her back, loose, wind tousled curls.
But it’s her little smirk, and her eyes. Ancient and wide, the deep blue of the ocean when the water is getting deep and dangerous and just as secretive, as she grins at me, and lifts that half smoked cigarette.
Her lips hold it in place as she pulls her hair back in a loose, messy pony tail and I want to feel them. Taste her lips.
“Didn’t think anyone else was stupid enough to come up here. It’s called the windy city for a reason,” she says, and I blink at her.
“You’re out here.” I point out. She shrugs and makes a tiny face, all wrinkled nose and scrunched eyes. It’s not the kind of calculated sexy pout so many girls practice. It’s too goofy to be anything but real, and I’m fascinated that any girl could be so fucking goofy without worrying about the effect it has on her chances of landing in my bed.
“I’m crazy. Obviously,” she says, deadpan, and I laugh, a startled noise. She grins and turns away, lifting her cigarette again. I watch her sidelong as we smoke and she stares out at the other buildings.
“You know it’s creeper behavior to stare, right?” she says, a smile in her voice.
I grin, “Maybe. But when you run into a crazy girl on the roof with a lighter, she deserves a few extra glances.”
Her gaze turns severe. “Don’t flirt, smoker boy. Just smoke your cigarette and be good company like a nice boy.”
“Ah, but that’s your mistake.” I say, smiling and prowling closer to her.
What is?”
“You think I’m a nice boy.” I murmur and her breath hitches. Her eyes are wide as I drop my cigarette and put it out with my shoe, and I can see the frantic pound of her pulse in the hollow of her throat. She’s leaning against the half wall that surrounds the roof, and I have the insane urge to press her into it, lean her over it and kiss her senseless.
I blink, and step back. “Why are you here?” I ask.
She lets out a breath I didn’t realize she was holding and wilts with disappointment. She takes the final drag of her cigarette and tosses it over the side of the roof. “Family business,” she says tightly and gives me one more devastating smile before she slides past me and pushes open the door. She glances back at me, and there it is. The coy smile. The one that is all sex and promises. “Stay out of trouble, nice boy.”

I was just a reporter, trying to stay ahead of my student loans. I knew the rules, and I followed them.
I thought I knew how the world worked—humans lived their petty little lives in the safety of the sun. We loved and fought and—when the sun sank—we scurried behind our walls and lived in fear. That is when the monsters came out to play.
And even in the safety of the sun, we knew who ruled us.
The Houses. And their Scions.
Everyone knows the great Houses and their Scions—they are feared and loved and hated and envied. They are the gods who walk the shadows and rule all of our lives. They are salvation and death.
And somehow, I am one of them.

Exclusive Excerpt

“Farley?”
I blink, and stare at my intern. She’s a tiny little thing, and it occurs to me—not for the first time—that I have no business putting her in an office like this. We aren’t doing the smart thing—we don’t toe the House line.
We’re too little for them to care, but I’m well aware that it’s not exactly safe.
“What is it?”
“You have a lunch appointment, ma’am.”
I frown. “Since when?”
“Hendin set it up.”
I breathe a curse. Kevin Hendin might be the best damn editor I’ve ever met, but he’s still a fucking pain in the ass. I swallow that thought down and save the draft I’m working on, rising and shrugging into my suit coat. “Where?”
“Silver and Ivy.”
I go still. Who the hell are we meeting that can afford S&I? It’s one of the finest restaurants in the city, completely human, and expensive as fuck.
Winston took me there when I graduated from NYU. Of course, it was for a tiny glass of wine and a shared dessert—neither of us could afford more than that—but it was a sweet gesture that meant a lot, especially coming from my ridiculously practical brother.
“Ma’am?”
I blink out of my thoughts to focus on my intern, and snatch up my laptop and phone. Shove both with my wallet into my messenger bag and snag my glasses and notebook before I dart out.
It’s ridiculous to use a notebook, these days. Everyone has gone digital—what was a gathering wave before Brakken—became a way of life in the aftermath. The Houses controlled everything after, and pushed tech hard. Some people believed it was out of kindness.
It wasn’t.
But I’ve never been blinded by the pretty veneer of the Houses or their Scions.

Silver and Ivy is one of the last places in New York that can still maintain their human only clientele. Because they cater to the wealthy, and even in the aftermath of the plague and all the change that the Houses inflicted on us, the wealthy maintains a level of untouchability. They are protected by that comfort of security that money can buy.
Even the wealthiest in our country could be bought by one of the Houses, but I think it amuses them to let the one percent cling to the illusion that they are still different from the rest of us.
I step into S&I and belatedly realize that I don’t know who I’m meeting. I mutter a soft curse and the eyebrow of the host twitches in response.
No, I suppose he isn’t used to young reporters with a gutter mouth spilling into his lunch hour. I grin, and run a hand through my hair. I’m about to screw up his whole day.
I amble up to where he wait and he gives me a frosty stare.
“I’m meeting someone,” I say.
His gaze sweeps over me and his lips curls just a little, all annoyed disdain that pisses me off.
“And you are?”
“Farley Hart.”
His eyes go wide and he pales, so much so I take a step back. Something is very wrong about all of this, and Winston always told me to listen to my gut. I take another step, and a hand clamps down on my arm, rooting me to the spot.
It’s icy and burning and so damn unmovable. I know, even before I let my gaze crawl up.
Shiny boots, a pristine black suit that cost more than my degree, a startlingly white shirt with a skinny black tie. Wide shoulders, thin waist, and a hand that’s fucking huge, latched onto me.
A ring glints on his finger and I focus on that, on the strange sigil worked into the metal.
It’s not gold, and it sure as hell isn’t silver. It’s almost dull. Iron?
“Oh shit,” I mutter.
A vampire is holding me, keeping me from bolting. And if that weren’t bad enough—it’s a damn Blood Prince.

Twelve Houses. Twelve vampire lines. We ruled from the shadows, and manipulated the world, and when humans came too close to destruction, we intervened.
Every House has a Scion. A fragile, easily broken human that stood shoulder to shoulder with the house Princes and Princesses.
Except for ours. The Ravens, House Cantelie.
We've been without a Scion for almost fifteen years.
But that will change...and her life will be mine to protect.
