EXCERPT

Kuruny pulled another jar off the witching wall and stuffed it into the bag straddled between her legs. She tried not to shake, but her hand quivered as she reached for another jar.

“Leave that, we can get more of it,” Kazza snapped. She sat on the other side of the cauldron, twisting the beads of her necklace with her fingertips. She shot a warning glance at Kuruny, watching as the younger sister put the jar back on the wall. Kazza swiveled on the stool and crossed her legs. Her white gown swept the floor as she stood and crossed the room. Brown hair fell in waves down her back. She studied the wall for a moment and grabbed something glittering and gray.

“This doesn’t grow in the Lands of Men.” She dropped the jar into the sack and met Kuruny’s gaze.

“He doesn’t know yet,” Kuruny said. It was half a question, half a statement. Eventually Istar would find out what she had done. She closed her black eyes and shook her head, sending locks of straight black hair falling over her shoulders.

“Nay, but others . . .” Kazza paused. Kuruny listened for sounds in the halls of the Lower East wing. She kept her thoughts close on their protection spell; none had bothered to check for supplies, yet there were plenty of herbs for healing in their quarters. Kazza eyed the rucksacks against the wall.

“Will come soon,” Kuruny finished for her. She ran her hands along the inside of the black sleeves of her dress. They tightly wrapped her arms to her elbows and loosely cascaded towards her wrist. She wasn’t used to this feeling. Avristar was meant to be home, a place away from the distortion they suffered in the Lands of Men, but Istar would have her head if Avristar herself didn’t sentence them to death. She shuddered at the thought and closed her eyes, thinking of Shimma. The third sister was lost in the forests where the enemy had retreated. They had barely enough time to communicate their wants to the youngest of their trio, and yet, they had to trust she would find what they needed—a way to salvation.

Kazza crossed the room and opened up a large armoire. Inside were three cloaks: one black, one beige, and one blue. Kazza handed the black one to her sister as she slid the beige one over her own shoulders, fitting the hood over her brown hair. Kuruny felt melancholy, as though the guilt had seeped into her bones.

“Come, there is no sense in facing him. You know his anger will know no bounds,” Kazza said.

REVIEW

I really loved continuing on the journey with Krishani. After the devastating turn of events at the end of Surrender, I was intrigued to see how it would all affect him, and if it would force him to follow his calling.

He seemed very lost, and once he travelled to the Lands of Men, things became a little more complicated with the revelation of the Vultures, and the tough decision he was faced with. When he chose to go in search of the Flames I had to wonder what his real purpose was. Was he looking for a way to make amends with Avristar? Was he looking for trouble, and ultimately his own destruction? Or was he really holding onto hope that some how he'd find his way to Kaliel?

As his journey became more treacherous, so the subtle changes in Krishani's ways became more evident. As the darkness took over his body, so it seemed to be taking over his soul. He was a little more ruthless than before, and he actually looked to be more comfortable in the presence of the Vultures.

There was still quite a bit of mystery behind the Flames and how they could be used together, and then there was the strange appearance of the Horsemen, and Morgana. They left a lot of destruction in the wake, but their overall role in this epic fantasy was yet to be defined. I really am looking forward to seeing how their presence will develop in the next book.

The final battle was almost as devastating as the one that brought Avristar to her knees, but there were a few surprise twists that gave me hope that the beautiful love story of The Ferryman and The Flame would never end. No amount of evil could destroy them. I guess I'll have to wait to read the next book in this series to see if true love will conquer all.

This is JUSTICE from the villain's POV.

The Daed are pawns to one of the most powerful members of the Valtanyana. Crestaos is insane, his hunger for the Flames insatiable. The closer the Daed get to achieving his goal, the more expendable they become.

REVIEW

Once again it was exciting to get to see behind the scenes of what's happening with the bad guys while the hero continued on his journey.

I did, however, find that this short story ended too abruptly. I was waiting to see the battle scene through the eyes of Crestaos, or even one of the Daed, and it would have been interesting to feel what Crestaos experienced when Tiki saved the day.

I was a bit confused by a few things that happened in this story, but I'm sure they will tie in to the next installment of this exciting and epic fantasy, adventure.

Can you share the playlist you listened to while writing ‘Surrender’ with us?

Once again we’re really digging deep because Surrender was finished in 2009, then rewritten once in 2010, and again in 2011 and was then edited a lot and in 2012 I added some deleted scenes, illustrations, a map, and an alternate ending (for fun)

1. Caught Myself - Paramore

I listened to this song on repeat while finishing the first draft of the last part of Surrender. I’m always about the lyrics and the cadence of a song, this one had what I needed to finish the book.

2. Setting Sun - Eskimo Joe

Again, I was looking for songs at the time that could help me plow into the emotions of my characters. So this song was great for that.

3. My Number - Tegan and Sara

All time favorite Indie Rock Duo. I love their older stuff because of how raw and original it was.

4. Satellite Heart - Anya Marina

I suppose the whole Twilight Soundtrack was being played around this time but the songs on this soundtrack were amazing because of the Indie Rock quality to them and the fact that the movie was considered an Indie Film so really just a great time for this to come out for me.

5. Holy Toledo - Crystal Bowersox

I loved this girl when she was on American Idol because damn could she sing. So of course I downloaded her songs and made constant patronage to them while writing.

REVIEW

There’s something very magical about epic fantasies. I love being whisked away to a new world with exciting characters, and Paille drew me in to her story of forbidden love, magic, mystery and chaos, with strong writing, an intriguing plotline and characters I really cared about.

I loved the shift of POV between Kaliel and Krishani. They were each on their own journey to discover their destiny according to The Great Oak’s parable, but along the way they discovered each other and, along with a love that blossomed, the fulfillment of a prophecy began even before they knew their importance in the fight to save Avristar.

This story was well paced and a real pleasure to read. Fantasy fans will be enthralled from start to finish. I know I was and I cannot wait to continue of the journey of The Ferryman & The Flame. Will their love be enough, will they survive the evil that tore them apart in this book, and will the prophecy be fulfilled once and for all?  These are the questions that burn in my mind, and I’m looking forward to finding the answers as this exciting series continues.

Can you share the playlist you listened to while writing ‘Lantern & Poison’ with us?

Lantern & Poison was written around the same time as Surrender, then was extracted from the original novel and so trying to come up with a playlist for this novella alone is really hard! I’m flipping through songs I used to listen to around 2006 - 2009 when it was written and here’s what I got!

1. Spesso Sprofondo by Emma Shapplin

Emma Shapplin’s entire Greatest Hits Album was something I was listening to a lot during this time. The haunting vocals, the dark tones to the music really pulled me in.

2. Gamen by Garmarna

One of the classic Celtic bands out there and if you haven’t heard this song you need to. I found this song in high school when our modern dance teacher played it in class. Years later I managed to find the song again, so it was definitely inspiration for me.

3. Heavy in your arms - Florence and the Machine

The first Florence Welch song I fell in love with. I have since listened to alot of Florence for inspiration.

REVIEW

It was great to get to read the story of Surrender from the villain’s POV. Paille paints a vivid picture of just how evil Crestaos is, and even though the Daed warriors depicted in this story bend to his will, there is obviously a divide in their group and I’m intrigued to see how this develops, and how it will affect the future plans of their wicked leader.

It was something else to experience the cruelty and torture the Flames were subjected to and only through this story can one truly understand the pain Kaliel felt when faced with the death of these Flames.

Paille does a great job of tying together the events of Surrender and Lantern & Poison, giving her readers the special privilege of seeing the story from both sides. It was exciting and looking forward to the rest of this series.
