Sometimes the strings that tie us down are the same strings that set us free. Sixteen-year-old Pia has always lived in a mysterious facility where mechanical strings control her existence. She plays apprentice to her father, Gio, in performing nanotech designs for the Company, and she soon suspects there are diabolical human forces behind the manufactured reality of her world. Though her childhood memories and the origins of the strings remain strangely elusive, she begins to find solace with the introduction of two unlikely friends: daring, irrational Sofia, and calm, tender Marco. As the truths of the past and present unravel together, Pia must find a way to free herself from her strings and escape the facility before facing the wrath of the unstable head of security, Mr. Davis. But to gain her freedom, she must navigate the dangers posed by Davis and by her suspicious new friends to find the real identity of the puppeteer. If Pia can succeed in revealing the secrets of the Company, she may very well find the independence she so desperately seeks. But in her controlled world nothing is as it seems, and the closer she gets to the truth, the graver the consequences.

EXCERPT

“My mother told me a story when I was little. It was my favorite story, about a lion. I didn’t remember it before, but I do now.”

Marco blinks, raises his eyebrows. This is clearly not what he was expecting.

“The lion was the son of the King of the Pride, destined to one day be the new king. The only problem was that the poor lion couldn’t roar. The other lions teased him relentlessly about his failings. ‘How can a lion with no roar be a king?’ they would mock. The lion’s only companion was a beautiful young lioness who didn’t care about his lack of a roar. ‘You are who you are,’ she would say, ‘and I like you this way.’ Much to his father’s disappointment, the lion spent more time with her than with the other lions.

“Ashamed of the son he’d created, his father eventually felt he had no choice but to cast his own son out of the Pride, instructing him not to return without his roar. ‘Don’t fail me, Son,’ he said. He didn’t give his son the chance to say goodbye to the lioness.

“For days, the lion wandered aimlessly, foraging for food and seeking his roar in the dark places of the world. He encountered moments of fear, of anger, of beauty, but still he remained silent, his ferocious mouth opening and closing soundlessly with each new experience.

“Until, one day, when by chance alone, his journey brought him full circle, back to his old Pride’s territory. High on a cliff, he watched them, shocked and amazed at how things had changed. His father was old and weak, and his mother was gone. The beautiful lioness was still there, but she was missing the spark he used to love in her big brown eyes.

“His sadness was so complete, so real, that he opened his mouth and bellowed, a mournful roar of melancholy and regret, so loud the entire Pride looked up to see him.”

When I finish the story, I realize Marco is staring at me while I stare off into space, still visualizing the lion and his Pride. “Then what happened?” he asks.

“I—I don’t know,” I say. “My mother always stopped there.”

“I don’t understand,” Marco says. “Did the lion become King of the Pride? Did he marry the lioness?”

I shrug. “I guess that’s for us to decide.”

“Why did the lion have to be so sad to roar?”

I look at him, lost in his gaze. “Sometimes we have to fall all the way to the bottom before we can rise to the top,” I say, quoting my mother’s words.

He nods, although I can’t tell if he really understands. I dance my fingers over to his, and link our pinkies. His eyes flash with surprise. “You feel nothing, right?” he says, the edge of his lip curling.

I grin back. “Honesty is a story about a lion,” I say. “Now, Marco, will you roar with me?”

He frowns. “What?”

“Roar with me.”

“Why?”

“Because we can,” I say.

“I’d feel foolish.”

“Don’t you ever do anything foolish?”

“I try not to. Why would I?”

“Because we’re human,” I say. “No one is watching us here, right? There’s no creepy black ceiling, no cameras, no one to feel silly in front of.”

“You’re here.”

“So what? We’ll both roar. C’mon. Just do it. Roar.”

“When?”

“Now. On the count of three. One, two—”

“Wait. I’m not ready.”

I roll my eyes. “One, two, three!”

I stay silent, listening to Marco’s pathetically awkward attempt at a roar, unable to hold back my laughter. “You call that a roar?”

“You tricked me. You said we’d roar together.”

“No, I said we’d both roar, but I never said we’d roar at the same time.”

He shakes his head. “I must’ve missed the difference.”

I roar, as loud as I can, filling the empty room with noise, relishing the way he flinches in surprise. “Did I scare you?” I ask, after I finish.

He roars. It’s a lot better than the last one, maybe even as good as mine, an ear-rending growl of freedom. Although his roar is resounding in my ears, I’m fixated on his hand, which is now entwined with mine, our fingers linked, our knuckles turning white.

When he stops, he says, “Better?” and I say, “Much,” and then we both open our mouths as wide as we can and roar together.

We don’t stop until our throats are raw and our mouths are dry and we can’t stop smiling.

REVIEW

David Estes has always been a masterful writer. I was first introduced to his work when I read The Moon Dwellers, and I have been a fan ever since. This was just another in a collection of stellar books written by this talented author.

Estes' descriptive and imaginative world building is fantastic, with characters who jumped right off the page, grabbed ahold of me and sucked me into their lives. Filled with despair, anger, fear, joy, hope and defiance, this was one emotional rollercoaster ride. Pia was a feisty, strong heroine who, although stuck as a slave, a prisoner to the Company, held her head high. Inquisitive, intuitive and brave, she wasn't afraid to step out of line from time to time - even if it ended with dire consequences.

Fig has to be the best sidekick ever written. I loved his snarky manner and how protective he was of Pia, even as tiny as he was. He proved time and again that he was a true friend, and could be relied on when needed. Marco was an interesting character because he was such a mystery. I wasn't sure how much he could be trusted, but he certainly had a soft spot for Pia, and as their friendship grew and blossomed into more, the more hope I had that he'd be a key to her freedom. As the truth about their past was revealed and the more twisted and despicable the plot became the more I wanted - no needed - Marco to help Pia. But, of course, freedom wasn't an easy thing to achieve and for Pia it would come with a devastating price.

This story was spellbinding. A tale of courage, love and hope, it enthralled me to no end.

By David Estes

Genre: Dystopia
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: 1 December, 2014

Someone must die before another can be born...

As sea levels rise and livable landmasses shrink, the Reorganized United States of America has instituted population control measures to ensure there are sufficient resources and food to sustain the growing population. Birth authorization must be paid for and obtained prior to having a child. Someone must die before another can be born, keeping the country in a population neutral position at what experts consider to be the optimal population. The new laws are enforced by a ruthless government organization known as Pop Con, responsible for terminating any children resulting from unauthorized births, and any illegals who manage to survive past their second birthday, at which point they are designated a national security threat and given the name Slip.

But what if one child slipped through the cracks? What if someone knew all the loopholes and how to exploit them? Would it change anything? Would the delicate resource balance be thrown into a tailspin, threatening the lives of everyone?

And how far would the government go to find and terminate the Slip?

In a gripping story of a family torn apart by a single choice, Slip is a reminder of the sanctity of a single life and the value of the lives we so often take for granted.

EXCERPT

Luce grabs him roughly and shoves him against the wall. “They’ll kill you. They won’t hesitate. I won’t leave a friend.” There are tears in her eyes and his vision blurs as tears flood his own vision. Luce’s grip on him slackens as she seems to realize how close together they are.

When Benson blinks the moisture away, he almost gasps. A dark-clothed Hunter strides past directly behind Luce. Crap. “Luce, they’re here,” he whispers.

Her eyes widen and he sees the fear that penetrates her expression. But just as quickly her eyes narrow and he can almost see the wheels turning in her head. Then, before he can so much as take another breath, she flexes her muscles, takes a deep breath, and leans forward and kisses him hard on the lips.

His entire body stiffens, shocked by the strange action taken by Luce when they’re in mortal danger, but then relaxes when he realizes what she’s doing: acting. She’s pretending to kiss him, just an act to fool the Hunters—two lovers in the shadows. Not the most wanted fugitives in the city. And yet, even her fake kissing sends Benson’s heart racing. Automatically, his lips melt into hers, rolling over them like gentle waves. His hand curls around the back of her head.

“Anything?” the Hunter shouts to someone Benson can’t see.

Luce jolts and her eyes pop open, but Benson stops her from turning, kissing her again. They watch each other as they kiss, which should be weird and sort of interesting, but Benson’s too scared to think about all of that.

“Nothing,” says someone else, presumably another Hunter. They must’ve been closing in from either side, rounding the curve, invisible until the last moment.

The train rumbles closer.

“Did you check everyone?” the second Hunter asks the first. The tone sounds so familiar. Benson tries to place it.

“Not everyone, but there was no one suspicious,” the first Hunter says.

“Go back and check everyone, you moron. The little buggers certainly didn’t get past me.”

“I’m the moron? You were one of the first ones inside the last time we had them trapped. How’d that work out for you?”

“Check them,” the second Hunter growls, a command this time. The cyborg, Benson realizes with a start.

Benson can feel Luce’s heart pounding against his chest. Or is that his heart? No. His, as usual, has switched with his brain and is trying to break through his skull. They’re screwed.

With a screech of brakes, the train pulls to a stop, a burst of wind following it a moment later. “Wait until the doors are about to close,” Benson whispers, his lips brushing hers.

She nods against him.

“Hey you!” one of the Hunters shouts. Benson holds his breath. Is he talking to them? Adrenaline pours through his veins, his body preparing to run. “Yeah you. Did you see a couple of teenagers come down these stairs?”

The law of the Tunnels is that no one talks to Crows or Hunters.

Benson risks a glance past Luce. The train waits for a few stragglers to board, its doors open. The Hunter’s back is to them. He’s facing an old guy with a thick gray beard.

“I’ve got to catch this train,” the man says, trying to pull away.

The Hunter grabs him. “Did. You. See. Them?” the Hunter says.

A loud tone sounds. Last chance to board the train.

“I’ve really got to go,” the man says. Don’t look at us, don’t look at us, Benson thinks.

The Hunter whips out a large black gun and points it at the old guy’s face.

“Okay, okay,” the guy says. His eyes flick over the Hunter’s shoulder. They lock on Benson.

No.

Why are the doors not closing yet? Then Benson sees her. How he missed her before, he doesn’t know, except she’s standing so still it’s like she’s an inanimate object. A young girl, no more than eight or nine, is holding the door open with a hand. She’s staring at them. Are you coming? her expression seems to say.

The old guy raises a hand and points at them.

The Hunter turns.

Benson shoves Luce and pushes off from the wall. In his peripheral vision he sees the Hunter whirling, his gun catching up to his body, taking aim, firing…

The blast is like an echoing explosion within the confines of the Tunnels, and for a moment Benson can’t hear anything. Luce is still beside him and they dive inside the door, which is finally closing, the girl having moved her hand away, her face shocked as she clings to her mother, who’s similarly clinging to a metal pole. And their mouths are open and they’re…screaming?

The sound rushes into Benson’s ears, the screams of the train passengers like alarm sirens.

The doors close and Benson looks at Luce, who seems okay, if a little stunned. Using each other as crutches, they stand, peering out the window as the train lurches forward. A black metal gun barrel faces them, just ahead of the cyborg’s gleaming white smile.

The Earth Dwellers will cap off an eighteen month journey that has taken me from unknown Indie author to still-mostly-unknown fulltime Indie author. The change is a subtle one for most people, but for me it’s a dream come true. To the hundreds (and now maybe even thousands!) of readers who have come along for the ride with me, either by reading the Dwellers Saga, the Country Saga, or both, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Now down to business.

There may be some of you who have only read the three books in the Country Saga or only the three books in the Dwellers Saga, and are now thinking you’ll read The Earth Dwellers, which is supposedly the 4th book in BOTH the Country Saga and the Dwellers Saga.

Well, that’s awesome!

However, I must highly recommend that before reading The Earth Dwellers that you read the three books in BOTH series. Trust me, doing so will greatly enhance your experience, as The Earth Dwellers will be taking significant characters from both series and crashing them together (yes, like a water country wave) into an action-packed tale of struggle and loss and hope and friendship… And maybe a little love, too.
