Blog Tour: Excerpt + #Giveaway: The Ruins by T.H. Hernandez

The Ruins (The Union Series _2) by T.H. Hernandez

Heartbroken, grief-stricken, and wracked with guilt, seventeen-year-old Evan Taylor returned to the Union, leaving behind the boy she loved.

Now, she and her friends must find a way to do the impossible – warn the citizens of the Union about an impending rebel attack without alerting the government and risking retaliation against her friends in the Ruins.

When every move Evan makes is thwarted, it soon becomes clear she's being watched. Faced with a daily fight to stay one step ahead of her pursuers, she returns to the Ruins. But life in the Ruins has its own dangers, and soon she’s fighting a different battle – to stay alive long enough to discover the truth.

THE RUINS is the second book in THE UNION series, a young adult romantic adventure set in the near future.

Bryce paces the room like a caged wildcat, mumbling to himself, while I sit on my bed, pulling at the threads of the blanket, watching him. He finally stops his manic laps around the tiny room and faces me, both of his hands flying to the top of his head.
“I’m worried about your uncle.”
“I thought you weren’t.”
“Benton’s up to something, I know it.”
I’ve never seen him like this and he’s sort of freaking me out. “Okay…” I push off the bed and walk over to him. “What besides him talking to kitchen staff makes you think that?”
“Earlier this year, when I was investigating him, he was into all kinds of shit.” He takes in a deep breath, his hands falling to his sides. “Small stuff that wasn’t as important as the weapons smuggling. But what your uncle said, about people being reassigned…What if your uncle’s a target? What if Benton’s planting people inside his administration?”
“Yeah, that thought occurred to me, too. But at least now my uncle has a heads-up.”
He shakes his head. “I need to follow up on this, Evan. I’ve got to find out what Benton’s up to.”
“Okay.” I grab my jacket off the back of the chair.
“No,” he says, putting his hands on my shoulders. “Too many people in this Borough know you.”
“I’m not letting you go alone, Bryce.”
“This is what I do, I’m a detective.” He shrugs into his coat and makes his way to the door. “I’ll be back in a few hours.”
“Okay. But be careful.” He gives me a look like I’d told him not to eat food he found on the sidewalk. “I get you know what you’re doing, but people are trying to kill us.”
He walks back to me and pulls me into his arms. “I will.” He gives me a quick kiss and heads out the door.
After locking the door behind him, I flop on the bed and turn on the display wall. I flip through programs absently, my mind too wrapped up in what Bryce is doing and concern for my uncle to focus on anything else. Before long, this tiny excuse for a room, with its dank air and lack of sunlight, becomes even more cave-like until I feel as if the walls are collapsing around me.
I write Bryce a quick note, grab my jacket, and head outside to fresh air and open space. Dark gray clouds push in from the coast, threatening rain, and I tug my zipper up to my chin to ward off the wind gusting down the alley. A hot drink sounds perfect right about now. I make my way to the nearest cafe, pushing through the door, triggering a chime.
A middle-aged barista with dark hair and a nose ring glances up and smiles. “What can I get you?” she asks.
“Caramel latte, please.”
I take off my jacket, draping it across the back of a chair, and turn when the door chimes again. A couple enters, their cheeks and noses pink from the cold. The barista delivers my drink before going to take the couple’s order. I pull out my tablet and get engrossed in a thriller, losing track of time and place.
“Is someone sitting here?”
I glance up and see a boy about my age, indicating the chair across from me. “Oh, no. You can take it.”
Although based on the overwhelming lack of people here, I’m not sure why he doesn’t take a chair from an unoccupied table. Until he drops into the chair flashing a charming smile. He’s cute and he knows it.
“Hi, I’m Simon.” He thrusts his hand at me, his blue eyes alive with humor.
“Uh…hi.” I take his hand, it’s rough, calloused. “Delilah.”
“Do people call you Lila or Dee for short?”
“Nope, just Delilah.”
“Okay, De-li-lah.” He drags out my name, making it sound like musical notes. “What’re you reading?”
“Oh, umm…a book.” I turn off my tablet and study him. Something about him seems almost familiar, although I’m sure I’ve never met him. “Where are you from, Simon?”
“Here and there. A little bit of everywhere, I guess.”
I glance at his fingernails and they’re ragged and dirty. He pulls his hands back, shoving them under the table. Chewing on my bottom lip, I try to put the pieces into place. He hides it well, but I detected a slight slow drawl when he spoke. Simon is rugged and evasive. He’s from the Ruins.

Exclusive Excerpt

The scents of honeysuckle and fresh-cut grass float on a late summer night breeze. I stare up at clouds from the chaise lounge on the balcony. A thick marine layer inched its way in from the coast hours ago, blanketing the sky and obscuring the stars I was hoping to see. With the moon hidden and the Union lights off for the night, darkness envelopes me.
Grief, guilt, heartbreak, fear, loss, and abandonment swirl in my head, creating a vortex of pain and confusion keeping me awake. Three days ago I was planning a future with the boy I love. Cyrus was going to come back with me. We were going to figure out a way to warn the Union or stop an attack on it. Together. Now his brother is dead, and Cyrus stayed behind, unable to ignore his sense of duty, unwilling to abandon those who needed him most.
Over the soft murmuring of desalinated ocean water burbling through the aqueduct on its way to homes throughout the Province, I hear the door slide open behind me. I sit up as my bio-dad, Eddie, walks out and sits next to me. “Can’t sleep?”
I shift to my right, giving him more room. “No. You?”
He shakes his head, his wavy, cinnamon-colored hair sweeping his shoulders. “My grandmother used to say if you can’t sleep, it means you’re awake in someone else’s dreams.”
That’s a comforting sentiment. Is Cyrus dreaming about me now? Or is he like me, too afraid of the nightmares to close his eyes?
Eddie presses his lips together and studies me for several long seconds. “Are you ready to tell me where you really were all summer?”
His question catches me off guard. I thought he bought my story, the one I told him when I came back. The one Lisa fed him while I was in the Ruins. Posing as me, she texted my mom and Eddie from my tablet with regular updates on our fake adventures sailing off the southeastern coast. When I first showed up here yesterday afternoon, he didn’t seem to care where I’d been or what I’d been up to, only that I was here at all. I’m definitely not ready to have this conversation with him.
“I don’t know, are you ready to tell me where you were for the first twelve years of my life?”
He shifts his weight on the chaise next to me and sighs. “I’m not sure how many times I can apologize.”
“You think another ‘I’m sorry’ is going to fix everything?”
“Look, I know I was a lousy father to you, but—”
“You weren’t a lousy father, you weren’t any kind of father at all. You were non-existent.”
He rubs his palms on his thighs and stands. “You’re welcome to stay here as long as you’d like, but you might want to ratchet the anger down a few notches.” He moves toward the door before turning back. “You’re going to have to forgive me some day.”
I raise my head and turn toward his dark silhouette. “Why? You think sending me a ticket and letting me hang out with your new kids makes up for everything?”
“No,” he says quietly, “because hanging on to all that resentment isn’t healthy.” He walks back into the house, sliding the door closed behind him.
With a heavy sigh, I fall on my back and stare back up into the blackness. Seriously? After being nothing to me for three-quarters of my life, where does he get off being all parental right now?

The Union (The Union Series _1) by T.H.Hernandez

After global warming and a second civil war devastated the former United States, two different societies rose from the ashes – the Union, a towering high-tech utopia, hugging the perimeter of the continent, and the devastated, untamed midsection known as the Ruins.

Seventeen-year-old Evan Taylor has an easy, privileged life in the Union. What she doesn’t have is any idea what to do with the rest of her life. She only knows she wants to do something meaningful, to make a difference in the lives of others.

When she’s kidnapped and taken into the Ruins as a pawn in a dispute involving her boyfriend, Bryce, her ideal world is turned upside down. What she learns while in the Ruins shakes her faith in everything she’s ever known, from Bryce, to her family, and even the Union itself.

Now Evan must choose whether to stay with Cyrus, the sexy, resourceful survivor who believes she’s in the Ruins for a reason, or return to the only life she’s ever known. But when she stumbles upon a dangerous plot that threatens both worlds, her decision could tear her apart.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Once the sun rises, I can make out trees in the distance. Real trees with leaves, which means there must be water nearby. I’m not sure Ruins water is safe to drink, but I do know I’ll die if I don’t drink something.

Even though I’ve been walking for hours, the trees don’t seem to be getting any closer. My legs have taken on a sponge-like quality and I stumble, but manage to stay upright. If I fall, I may never get up again.

I’m almost to the trees. They’re only a little farther now.

There’s no water here. How can there be trees without water?

Despair overtakes me and I drop down, pounding my fists on the barren ground. I stuff a soft green leaf in my mouth, seeking moisture, but my mouth is so dry, I gag on the pieces, tearing my throat like shards of broken glass.

My head spins as I lie on my back and struggle to form coherent thoughts. I take a deep breath and tell myself to think. Think is such a strange word. Think, think, think. It doesn’t even sound English.

Shaking my head to clear my mind, I try to pull myself together, remembering where I am and forcing myself to focus on my immediate situation. What do the Buddhists call it? Being mindful.

My brain works to form rational thoughts, but there’s nothing rational about this. I left home to find my place in the world, is this really where my search was supposed to lead me? It’s more like a cruel joke. If I was on a date with destiny, it just took a bizarre turn into a twisted ending I never saw coming.

God, if only I hadn’t gone to the park that night, none of this would’ve happened. I begin to cry. For my family and friends who will never know what happened to me, and for me. I’m not ready to die, I’m only 17.

I can’t help wondering if I would have spent so much time agonizing over my future if I’d known I’d be dead so soon. If I’d known, maybe I’d have done everything differently. Now I know my future. My life ends here. Alone. In the Ruins.
