Here’s the thing about Cedar.

I have no control over her.

Really.

None.

Which is a horrifying and slightly ridiculous thing to say about a creation of my own mind, who exists only in Word documents. But it’s true. Honestly, I don’t think I ever did have any control over her.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but when you read BEAUTIFUL LITTLE FOOL, there are things that happen that I didn’t only not plan in advance, I didn’t have any idea it was happening while I was typing.

Because that’s what happens with characters, sometimes. They take over the story, regardless of what you want.

And normally that’s cool, and you move forward because you trust your characters and the story they want to tell.

But I don’t trust Cedar at all.

I don’t suggest you trust her, either.

What comes with not trusting Cedar? Having to rewrite large chunks of the book because I have won exactly zero arguments against Cedar. And then rewriting more, because Cedar’s story, much like her, demand perfection.

Perfection takes time. Perfection took more time than I could have imagined it would.

I have never fought characters this hard.

I hope, hope, hope that the fighting has made this a better story.

Mr. Morris bustled into the room, holding a sheaf of papers. Every muscle in Cedar’s body stiffened. The board members all sat up straight.
“Well, then. I’ll just get started, then.” Mr. Morris cleared his throat, and began to read the will out loud. “I, Harold James Feingold, being of sound mind and…”
You could hear a pin drop as he read through the contents of the will. And when he got up to the part about Ellis, the room was so thick with tension you could have used it to soundproof Cedar’s office.
“And that’s it,” Mr. Morris said, looking up from the will. “Board meetings will be postponed for the next week, barring any emergency.”
“Who the fuck is Ellis Carrington?”
One of the board members finally burst out, voicing the question that everyone had been thinking. Cedar’s fingers were flying across her phone, Googling him as fast as she could. Heir of almost everything Feingold owned. And none of them had heard of him.
Harold, what the fuck were you thinking? She thought, furious, scrolling through Google. Graduate of business school. Lived in Connecticut. Parents died in a freak accident when he was five. Nothing. It told her nothing. There weren’t any recent pictures of him, which infuriated Cedar. She needed to know what he looked like, and she needed to know now. Not that it would make that much of a difference, but she had to know everything she could about him. And if he was attractive, all the better for her. Because whoever this Ellis Carrington was, he was hers. He didn’t know it yet, and he didn’t have to, but he was. And he’d find out soon enough.

“You didn’t ask for her number.” She scowls and pokes her finger into my chest. I look down at it, then glance up at her with a raised brow.

“You just assaulted an officer.”

“I did?” She swallows hard.

“Yes. I might have to arrest you.”

“With handcuffs?” She smiles gleefully, clearly excited at the thought.

“Would you like me to arrest you with handcuffs?”

“Hell to the yes!”

“Kate?” There’s suddenly a very tall, very irritated man standing behind the fiery redhead, staring daggers into me. I can’t help but laugh.

“I’m talking to the hot Asher,” she says, not turning to look at him. “I assaulted him, and he’s a cop, and he’s going to put me in handcuffs.”

“No, I don’t believe he will.”

I laugh again. “There’s nothing going on here, man.”

“Come see Lila!” Kate takes my hand, pulling me from my stool to the table behind us. Most of the women have cleared out, leaving just a few, including the sexy as fuck woman I met on the plane yesterday. “Where did everyone go?”

“Declan took them home,” Lila replies, and her hand stops midway between the table and her lips, holding her drink. Her violet eyes widen when she sees me. “Hi.”

“We meet again.” I sit next to her, my fingers itching to plunge in her dark hair and brush it over her shoulder. “How are you, Lila?”

“Fine.” She clears her throat and smiles at me. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.”

“A happy coincidence,” I reply softly. “You look beautiful.”

And she does. Her eyes are a bit glassy from the alcohol, her cheeks just a little flushed. Her hair is straight and falls down her back and over her slim shoulders. Before I can ask her questions about her trip here, or anything about her, we are soon pulled into the conversation with the others at the table. But when Kate asks Lila if she’s ready to go, I’m shocked when Lila responds with, “I’m gonna have Asher take me home.”

As you know, the With Me In Seattle series came to a close earlier this month with the eighth and final installment, FOREVER WITH ME. I've been steadfast in my decision that there would be no further stories from the series, no spin-offs, nothing more. In my mind, it was complete.

 

And I still feel that the Montgomery/Williams families are complete, and I maintain that I'm happy with their happy-ever-afters. 

 

But, I've also heard you when you've said that Asher, Matt Montgomery's partner in TIED WITH ME, deserves to have a happily ever after for himself and his daughter Casey. So, when the lovely ladies from 1001 Dark Nights asked me to participate in their wonderful project, I thought long and hard about whose story it should be about. Seattle is finished, and I've moved on to New Orleans for the new Boudreaux Series... And then it occurred to me: why not do both, and offer a companion novella to each of the series?

Dear Potential Readers,

I've had several bloggers and readers contact me asking about the content of GETTING DIRTY and how the underage relationship was handled, so I thought I'd give you some background.

As you can easily see from the book description, this is a story about a under age girl hooking up with a older man. I know there may be some of you who area a bit squeamish about this topic. It is illegal, I am aware of that. But there is a reason I wanted to write this book that has nothing to do with sensationalism or shock value.

This book is a fictionalized autobiography.

Just a month before I turned seventeen, I met a man who was twenty-four. Our connection was instant. For months we kept it platonic, even though neither of us could deny the attraction. We never had the actual discussion, but we both knew our relationship would be viewed by others (including my parents and the law) as inappropriate. But, despite our best efforts, we fell in love and started dating when I was seventeen. I've always wanted to write a love story that reflected everything I was feeling at that age, in that situation. So here it is.

For you hesitant readers, I can tell you that this illegal affair is not glamorized or sensationalize. There are severe consequences to the actions my characters choose to take. I wanted the topic handled honestly and realistically. I know this story isn't for everyone, but if you choose to read, I hope you enjoy.

EXCERPT

Without realizing I’m doing it, I find I’m leaning toward her. I catch myself and stop. But before I can pull back, she closes the rest of the distance and presses her lips hard against mine.
Any thought that I shouldn’t be doing this evaporates like fog in a stiff breeze at the taste of her mouth, moving hungrily on mine. She’s scotch and fire on my tongue as she devours me. Right or wrong, I’m powerless to stop her.
Her fingers run down my face to my chest as she opens her mouth wider, inviting me deeper inside. I take the invitation, tasting as much of her as she’ll give me. Her hands tug at the hem of my shirt and my breath catches when cold fingers meet my warm abs.
I press harder against her, drawing her closer, and fire rips through my veins as our tongues and hands explore the new landscapes of each other’s mouths and bodies.
But a shard of coherent thought finally manages to pierce the bubble I’ve constructed to justify what I’m doing. “You’re a student,” I say against her mouth.
Her lips skim to my ear. “I like you, Caiden,” she whispers, and her saying my name with that hot breath, that wet mouth, is nearly enough to break my resolve. “I like you a lot.”
I take her by the shoulders and gently peel her away, my heart hammering out African drumbeats against my ribcage. “You’re so damn incredible, but I can’t do this. It’s totally against university rules. I’m sorry.”
“You’re not my professor,” she says, her expression wounded. “If we like each other, I don’t see why it should matter.”
“I’m Dr. Duncan’s graduate assistant. My boss is your professor. It’s a conflict of interest, since I do most of his grading.”
“So you are conflicted.” It’s clear from the predatory shift her expression takes that she hears that I’m trying to convince myself as much as her.
I drop my head against the headrest. “I am.”
She leans closer again, her breast pressing against my arm through the thin cotton of her top. “I’ll never say anything. No one needs to know,” she whispers, her breath feathering over my neck.

Why I changed the cover.

Since its release, I’ve heard over and over again how much people love the cover, but they’re not fans of “country western” novels. It’s hard to convince people that the novel was about something else. With this story being near and dear to my heart, I went back to Sarah Hansen (months ago) and we started brainstorming. It wasn’t until she found the absolute most fitting image did we start moving forward.
Now some of you know I’ve changed a cover before and when I did, I offered new content. This is the same case. I have Lost in Us coming out in October which is the epilogue to Lost in You.

I hope you love the new cover as much a I do and love the cover for Lost in Us just as much.

Her body visibly relaxes. I step closer, my body happy being this close to her. Her eyes close as she breathes in. Is she remembering what we had? Are her memories as vivid as mine? My hands cup her cheeks and I can’t resist the temptation to kiss her.
The moment our lips touch, I know. The fire is back. The electric energy coursing through our bodies making us one is stronger than anything I’ve ever felt. My tongue seeks out hers and is met with the same heat and emotion that I remember so well. I know without a doubt that she is the one who can ignite desire within me.
I slow things down, careful not to open old wounds. I kiss her once more, before resting my forehead against hers.
“I’m sorry,” I whisper. I should’ve asked if she had a boyfriend or a husband before I did that. For all I know, she’s taken and I just assaulted her. “I just had to know,” I say, pulling away from her.
“Know what?” she asks.
I don’t hesitate this time. I’m not taking any chances. “If you’re the one.”
A smile breaks out across her freshly kissed lips and I fight every urge to kiss her again. But I hold back. If someone told me that I was going to end up kissing Hadley Carter after running into her, I would’ve laughed.
With utter reluctance, I let go of her. The connection is lost and I hate the feeling that I’ve had to suppress for so long. It’s amazing what one person can do to you with just a simple touch. Hadley is my drug and for the past four years I’ve been jonesing for just the smallest taste.
“Do you want to come in?” she points to the apartment behind her. “We can talk. I think we should talk. I have so much I need to tell you.”
I look at the doorman who’s watching me like a well-paid hawk. The question still plagues my thoughts. “Are you married?”
“No.”
“Boyfriend?”
“No, I’m single.”
Those are the answers that I was looking for. “Okay,” I say.
“Okay.” She turns and I follow her up the stairs. The doorman opens the door for us and she nods as we pass them. We stand side by side, waiting for the elevator. When we step inside, she presses the button for her floor and we ride in silence.
