“You’re up in six, Frankie.” Brock strolled back into the room with a sheet of paper in his hand. “I’ve cleared the list of questions they’re going to ask you. Take a look for yourself though.”

I leaned forward and reached for the paper, giving it a quick once-over. Same shit, different day. That was the thing about doing a press junket. You were asked the same questions a hundred different times but only in ten different ways. By now I’d perfected all of my answers and could do these interviews as drunk and high as Calder on a Saturday night.

I mentally scolded myself…that was mean. I didn’t know what it was, but something about Calder brought out my bitchy side.

Handing the paper back to Brock, I said, “Got it,” and rose from the couch, smoothing my skirt over my thighs when I was upright.

He led me down the hallway until we stood at the side of the stage to wait for my turn. We didn’t have long to wait. Calder came sauntering off stage, appearing completely relaxed and not at all like he’d just been forced to discuss what was supposedly one of the hardest times of his life.

His gaze inched slowly up the length of my body before he met my gaze, a small smirk forming on his lips. My traitorous nipples pebbled underneath my silk shirt, and I was sure he could tell given the fact that I wasn’t wearing a bra. Note to self—avoid backless shirts around attractive men. I pressed my teeth together, more irritated than ever that I found him so physically appealing.

“Have we met?” Calder asked me with that stupid grin still on his face.

I’m sure I looked like I was trying to catch flies with my mouth. Was he shitting me? I schooled my reaction as best I could and responded through clenched teeth. “Francesca Leon.”

“Oh, right. You’re that chick that does all the indie films.”

Seriously? He was going to act like we’d never met before—like we’d never worked together? Why did that grate on me so much? It’s not like I should care one way or the other what he thought. I gave him a quick nod, not saying anything.

He put his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels. “Well, good luck out there,” he said before walking past me. His cologne wafted by as he passed, a mix of the outdoors and the ocean. I resisted the urge to close my eyes and breathe in deeply. I would not let that idiot’s charm affect me like it did so many other women. I was smarter than that.

A production assistant walked up, a frantic expression on his face. “You’re due on set.”

“Coming,” I said. I swept all thoughts of Calder from my mind, remembering why I was here. This was the final push for my film that would be releasing next week, after which I’d be starting production on my first mainstream, big-budget studio film. This was is it…the one I was determined would launch my career and make Francesca Leon a household name.

“You do not need to bring that up.” Her eyes narrowed and I could tell she was pissed.
“Really?” I raised an eyebrow. “Do you react this way to every man who gives you an orgasm? Or just the ones you choose to hit and run?"
“I, what? I did not...” she stammered.
Good.
I had her off-kilter.
At least now I knew the feeling was mutual.
“Look, it’s fine.” I shrugged and grinned, showing her I wasn’t all that bad. “Why did you take off that night?” She looked at me, contemplating her answer.
“I was embarrassed. I’ve never done anything like that before. I had a little too much to drink and let’s just say I wasn’t thinking clearly.”
I took a step closer, my gaze locking on hers. My hand moved to her face and cupped her jaw. I couldn’t resist. “Oh, I’d say you were clear enough with me about what you wanted.” I grinned and inched closer to her.
The heat between us was palpable. I enjoyed making her uncomfortable. Maybe it was payback for her having left me in the dust that night.
Who am I kidding?
It was the attraction that still pulsed between us, even months later, in the light of day and stone-cold sober. Her mouth dropped open.
“Please, you were the one who kissed me first!”
“True, but you were the one who straddled me like you were gearing up to ride bronco,” I said with a pretend laisse-faire tone. Ah, there was that adorable flush in her cheeks again, when it had just started to subside.

Eventually I pulled my head up to look at him. He brushed my hair off my face and held it back, giving me a kiss.

 

“There’s nowhere I’d rather be right now than right here. No one I’d rather be with,” he said, his voice serious.

 

I opened up my heart, as difficult as that was, finding the courage to let myself believe him. Maybe I was a fool, maybe I would end up with a broken heart. I couldn’t be sure. But life was full of surprises, both good and bad, and where Max was concerned I decided to throw my tendency of always having a plan and looking ahead at what the future held out the window.

 

I’d enjoy this and whatever emotions came along with it, for as long as it lasted—and once it was gone I’d enjoy the memory of it. I refused to regret one minute I spent with Max, regardless of the eventual outcome.

 

He was the one that had helped me to find myself again. He was the one who had given me the courage to allow myself to really feel again. And, as I was discovering, with feeling came the good and the bad. But if you never passed through a storm, than you’d have no appreciation for the rainbow.

This story changed from fun, flirty and passionate, to something darker with the realization that someone was trying to either scare Chloe away from Max, or trying (in a very creepy way) to warn her against him.

Once Chloe got over Max’s slip up, and they “made up” **fans self** things cooled off between them due to all the outside influences dictating their relationship. One thing that became obvious was that their feelings were far stronger than either expected, and neither was willing to end their fling.

This book was not only filled with the passion and excitement that the first two volumes exuded, but there was a great mystery surrounding who was targeting Chloe and why. There were more than enough characters who’d have the motive to see Chloe and Max split.

Once again, this book ended on an emotional cliffhanger that has me craving the fourth volume. What the heck was Max thinking? And where does that leave them?? I can only hope it’s not at all what it seems.

Wow!! What a way to introduce these two amazing characters!!

The chemistry between them was quite explosive from the very first second they laid eyes on each other and things only heated up from there.

The fact that Chloe and Max were from different worlds and that they were in many ways rivals gave this story a star-crossed lovers feel, although this only really became a factor later on in the serial. Volume one was a fun, light read with Chloe fighting against her attraction for Max, and Max pursuing what he wanted – Chloe.  I loved the little cat and mouse game between them, as Max slowly broke down Chloe’s walls until she could no longer deny what was between them.

There were times when I felt like certain scenarios were added as an afterthought, or just for the purpose of upping the drama in this story, when they could have been omitted.

Overall, this was a great start to this serial and I’m excited to see where Chloe and Max’s “fling” leads them.

I was excited to see Chloe and Max’s non-relationship grow and develop, and no matter how hard they tried to pretend that what they were doing was nothing more than a Summer fling, the feelings were real and growing deeper with each passing second.

Things seemed to be going well for them until the fine line of mixing business with pleasure came crashing down around them. Chloe had worked so hard for success and even though I hated her boss for laying such heavy demands on her, I could understand why she felt the need to listen to him. She and Max weren’t anything serious and to jeopardize her future for something that was so uncertain would be crazy.

This book ended on such a cliffhanger and I couldn’t wait to see what had infuriated Chloe so much. Once again, it was a great read with plenty of passion and smoking hot chemistry.
