Book Blitz: Excerpt + #Giveaway: Freeing Destiny by Faith Andrews

Freeing Destiny
Faith Andrews

(Fate #2)
Publication date: March 14th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Words to live by:
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
Don’t break the rules.
I’d managed to fail at both by fraternizing with the enemy’s brother. Guess I’d followed in my mother’s footsteps by ignoring all the rules when it came to love.
Mom was marrying a man only six years older than me. A man who was also her student. But the biggest surprise that came out of their wedding wasn’t my new stepdad’s academic status or his age.
It was Jack Davis—my stepfather’s best friend.
Jack was the guy who could change the whole game. He was quite possibly my soul mate. But time and circumstance were against us—there was no easy way around it. I was moving back to New York in two weeks and his sister, Aubrey, was the one person my family hated most in this world. How would his sister—the enemy—deal with another Edwards girl claiming what she believed was hers? The idea of letting Jack go crippled me. Would I have to cut ties with the only man I’d ever let into my heart?

“I don’t think you’re a tease, Stella.”
“Then what do you think?” I was dying to know what was running through his mind. I wasn’t playing a game—honest to God—but I could see how it might look that way. Unlike the way I’d felt in the beginning of all this, I didn’t want him to give up on me because my actions were yo-yoing all over the place.
I wanted him to pursue me while we still had time.
Taking my hand in his, he placed one finger under my chin and turned my face in his direction. “What I think is that you’re a phenomenal kisser. And I plan on doing a lot more of that tonight and all the other nights until you leave—maybe even some of that kissing will convince you not to go. But in the meantime, we’re going back to my place, we’re going to order whatever you want to eat, then relax and watch a movie or whatever makes you comfortable. As long as we get to spend time together . . . there’s no rush.”
The saddened look in his eyes told me that last part was a lie. It was painfully obvious that we were running out of time. I hated it. There were so many things I wished for in that moment—the ability to freeze the clock, or travel back in time, or to have an endless do-over of the last few days with Jack on a repeat reel. It felt like some odd and cruel twist of fate. What kind of messed up destiny would throw Jack in my path now?
Forgoing all the bitter thoughts playing out in my frazzled brain, I nodded in answer to Jack’s questioning eyes. “Okay. I like the sound of that.”
It was time to abandon plans and worries and strategies. The only thing I planned on doing from here on out was whatever I felt was right—in the moment. I wanted to kiss him again, and if kissing led to more then I was ready for that, too. Jack was right when he said all that mattered was that we spent the time we did have together. The memories would be worth it, even if it meant hurting in their absence.

It all comes down to this . . .

Chloe Lilywhite has struggled for years to find her footing in a series of dangerous and demanding worlds. Creator, first tier Council member, and one of the most powerful Magicals in existence, she was little more than one of Fate’s pawns. But now, Chloe is back home and ready to call the shots. She knows what she wants and who she wants to be.

Except the Elders never got the memo.

Annar and Magical-kind are under attack. The lives of Chloe’s loved ones, and life as they know it, are at stake. Chloe's the key to taking the Elders down, but they won't go quietly into the night.

This time, neither will Chloe.

EXCERPT

Quiet voices nearby send my focus to the other end of the large room. I make out Kellan and Will, matching in cross-armed, tense stances as they talk with Astrid Lotus and Kate Blackthorn. They’re not alone; at a table nearby sit Cameron and Callie, exhaustion coloring them almost as strongly as that I feel here in this bed.
“This is unacceptable,” Kellan is saying, his voice low, like he doesn’t want to wake his brother or me up, but it’s angry, too. “You’re the Council’s lead Shaman!”
“Sweetling,” Astrid murmurs, reaching out for her son’s arm, but he yanks out of her grasp.
“No. I’m sorry, but no. This is not acceptable.”
            She tries again. “Kellan—”
He’s livid. “We’re going on five days, Astrid. Five. Days. How is it, with all of the worlds’ best Shamans working on her, nobody can wake Chloe up? Or at least figure out what the fuck happened to her?”
Five whole days? I’ve been . . . asleep, or whatever it is I’ve been, for nearly a week? What did that Jens-like person do to me?
I’m desperate to let Kellan—let them all—know I’m okay, that I’m finally awake, but only a tiny rasp escapes me, like somebody has stolen my voice. Speaking shouldn’t be so difficult. Curling my fingers around Jonah’s hand shouldn’t be so tiring.
Something is wrong. Something is very wrong.
“I’m going to have to concur with Kellan,” Will is quietly saying, yet his words are just as harsh as Kellan’s. “I know I’m only a Métis, but I’m pretty sure that with all the Magic you all can do, something should have worked by now. I mean, you are Magicals. Isn’t this the bloody point?”
Cameron stands up, a hand going to his son’s shoulder. “William—”
“Dad, don’t even try to excuse this. Weren’t you raving to Erik just this morning how somebody better bloody do something or heads were going to roll?”
Cameron doesn’t deny this in the least, nor does he look chastised.
“We’re trying our best, but Kellan,” Kate says, “maybe it’s time to prepare yourself.”
“Prepare myself?” he sputters. “What, like . . . you mean accept that she’s gone and not coming back?”
Try as I might, no words escape my lips. I’m here, I want to shout. I’m alive and awake. Turn around. See me.
“Or,” he continues bitterly, “prepare myself that you’re going to keep her on some kind of Magical life support until some new Creator is born? Because that’s what you’re thinking, right?”
Astrid says his name again, all heartbreak and sympathy in her syllables.
Kate turns white in the face of his quiet fury. “This is . . . I’ve never seen anything like this. If we only knew about the circumstances leading up to what happened—”
“How many times do you need to hear it?” Kellan seethes. “Chloe and Jonah were having dinner in a crowded restaurant. She ate food off of both of their plates. He ate off of hers, so there can’t be any poisoning issues—but you all should know that, considering the food was all tested. Chloe went to the restroom. She never returned. Ten minutes later, when it felt like somebody was literally gutting us—” He stops, hands yanking at his hair. “When it felt like somebody was tearing him apart, Jonah went and found her on the floor of the bathroom, bleeding and unconscious. He tried to wake her up. He failed. Cora Carregreen tried to work on her, but failed. I tried to wake her up, but failed. Kiah Redrock was sent in to see if she could reach Chloe through her dreams, but she failed, too, as Chloe’s brain wasn’t . . .” He takes an unsteady breath. “Isn’t even functioning enough to have dreams. Shall I continue, Kate? Because, I mean, you’re the Shaman and all.”

Spotlight: Author Interview with Heather Lyons

TheFateSeries

Hello, Therians!

Well, I'm sure you all saw the fantastic cover for A Matter of Truth, as well as the new cover for,
A Matter of Fate, which were both revealed yesterday.

Today I have the honor of having Heather Lyons here for a quick chat :)

Enjoy!!

Hi Heather,
Thanks for joining us today!

1.      Tell us a bit more about yourself.
Once upon a time, I was an archaeologist and then a teacher, but now I’m a writer and a stay-at-home mom. I’m also a voracious reader myself who one-clicks way too often!

2.      Have you always wanted to be an author?
Yes and no—when I was a kid, I really wanted to be an author, but it seemed unrealistic. So I became an archaeologist instead, which was really a dream job. Once I had my kids, I decided to give writing a try again. I’m so glad I did! I love sharing my stories with readers.

3.      What genre do you love to read? Who are some of your favourite authors?
I mostly read romance, be it YA, NA, historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, or the like. I pretty much love reading about love. Authorwise, I really adore Jane Austen (but then, who doesn’t?), Stephanie Perkins, Kristin Cashore, and Alexander McCall Smith. It’s hard to pick just a few, though!

4.      If you could be a character from any of your books, who would you be?
Oh, wow. This is tough! From the Fate series, I’d probably pick somebody like Giuliana, because I think it would be awesome to control the weather. Plus, her life isn’t quite as angsty as some of the others. Haha!

5.      What obstacles did you encounter on the road to being published? How did you overcome them?
The biggest roadblock was whether or not I could actually go indie with the Fate series. Part of me really wanted to go the traditional route, but I’d also heard such great things about the indie publishing world that it took some time to decide which way I would go. I knew that, indie-wise, it would take a lot more work to get my book out there and noticed, so that was a big consideration. Eventually, though, I decided it might be worth the risk to try it. J

6.      What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?
Honestly? Just keep on writing. Write every day if you can. And then write some more. If you want to get into publishing, give your book the respect it deserves—hire an excellent editor and then listen to them when they give you feedback.

7.      How did you come up with the idea for the Fate Series?
I’ve been obsessed with world mythologies ever since I was a little girl; my grandmother used to read me stories all the time. It was a completely fascinating idea to me—just what if the ancients had it right, and there were beings who controlled our world and lives? Even more so—what if the most powerful person was a teenage girl with boy problems? It seemed much too fun of an idea to pass up!

8.      Describe your books in one sentence?
The Fate series is all about Chloe Lilywhite’s journey toward discovering her place in the worlds—who she is, who she wants to be, and what she can do.

9.      Did you learn anything from writing this book? What?
Well, I definitely learned how to be brutal (and realistic) when it comes to editing my writing. Even if I like something (a storyline, characters, sentences, etc . . .) a lot, if it doesn’t work, it needs to go.

10.  Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?
I’m currently working on the third book in the Fate series—A Matter of Truth. It’s all about Chloe discovering what her “truths” are: what she feels her life should be like, not what others tell her it should be.

11.  Is there any exciting news you’d like to share with us?
I recently moved up my release date for A Matter of Truth from December 17th to November 5th! I’m so excited to share this story with everybody.

Book 1 in The Fate Series,
A MATTER OF FATE

Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn't a normal teenage girl. She's a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she's a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she's to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind.

Their number one target? Chloe, of course.

That's nothing compared to the boy trouble she's gotten herself into. Because a guy she's literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to. Chloe's once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.

ABOUT A MATTER OF HEART

No longer in high school, Chloe Lilywhite is now living and working in Annar, the Magicals' city-state plane of existence. Since moving, she's joined the Council, gone on missions with the Guard, moved into her own apartment, and enrolled at the University of Annar. Plus, she's happily engaged to be married to Jonah Whitecomb, the literal man from her dreams, not to mention her Connection. While she still struggles with aspects of her craft, Chloe feels like she's finally coming into her own, especially after a difficult year that had her questioning nearly everything in her life.

After a brutal attack by the Elders, her life is turned upside down once more. Accusations fly throughout the Council and Guard, forcing Chloe to confront her worst fears about what's she's capable of as a Creator. And then there's the matter of Kellan Whitecomb, Jonah's twin brother and Chloe's ex, who resurfaces after disappearing months before. Although Chloe chose Jonah, and despite their best efforts, the two find it hard to stay away from one another. But no matter what Fate throws at her, Chloe is determined to take charge of her life, even as it begins to spiral out of control.

Book 3 in The Fate Series,
A MATTER OF TRUTH
Not long ago, Chloe Lilywhite seemingly had it all: a prized spot on the Magicals’ Council as lead Creator, a loving fiancé and Connection, and a wealth of good friends. But the poised young woman she projected was nothing more than a façade. Her parents all but disowned her. Power plays and accusations of murder within the Council rocked her confidence. And most difficult of all, her secret, a secondary Connection to Jonah’s twin brother, Kellan, became painfully impossible to resist. Desperate to gain control over her rapidly unraveling existence, Chloe did the unthinkable: she ran away.

Now living and working in Alaska under an alias, Chloe is slowly discovering who she is and, more importantly, who she wants to be. But the more she tries to leave the Magical world behind, the harder it becomes to stay hidden. The Elders are back with a vengeance, and the stakes have never been higher. Chloe finally has to make a choice: embrace her pre-ordained Fate or pave her own way in the worlds. One thing’s for sure, though—she’s finally up for the challenge.
