“Time is like a river,” Etach said as they walked along the edge of a grassy pasture. “And like a river, with some knowledge and effort, one can move up and down its currents as one likes. However, the farther you move, the more effort is required.”
Fritz paused and leaned against a rock. Beynn and Etach stopped as well while Etach gave a brief explanation of time travel. “So I can go into the future too?” Fritz asked excitedly.
“It is possible to move forward in time, but it’s extremely difficult. Just like on our metaphorical river, you can expel a mountain of energy to move faster than the river is carrying you, but you still won’t get much farther than if you had used no energy at all. So in short, stepping into the future is not recommended.”
“How far back can you go?” Fritz asked.
“As far as you can withstand,” Etach said.
“Withstand?” asked Beynn, who was also listening to Etach with exceeding interest.
“Yes,” said Etach. “As I said, it takes lots of energy to step through time. As you are aware, Beynn, magic is tiring, and advanced magic can be exhausting. Well, time travel is about as advanced as it gets.”

EXCERPT
As the raft reached the dock, Fritz saw the boatman more clearly. He sent a bolt of terror up Fritz’s back. The man was pale and wrinkled and hunched over. He had the faintest wisps of long white hair that clung to his head, damp from the mist. He wore a white robe, and the bottom of it hung over the edge of the raft into the water. But the most frightening part of him was that he had no eyes; there were only sockets.
The raft stopped at the dock’s edge and the man turned and faced Fritz. “We wish to cross,” Fritz said. The man held out his hand, palm up, expecting payment. Fritz pulled his satchel from his shoulder and stepped towards the boatman. “I have gold. How much do–”
“No!” The old man bellowed. The sound was horrible, unlike anything Fritz had ever heard. He stopped, startled. The old boatman pointed at Fritz. More specifically, he pointed at Fritz’s stomach, directly where the dagger was strapped beneath his cloak.
“I don’t understand,” Fritz said, opening his satchel. “I have a great deal of gold.”
“Leave it,” the boatman moaned, his hideous voice like needles in Fritz's ears.

Character Bios

Beynn Firehand - In The Green Dagger, Beynn is eighteen and is settling in and accepting his new life as a Sorak, but is still conflicted by having to live a double life. He is still afraid to reveal his true self to the people from his village, and so must disguise himself. He is intelligent and compassionate and a loyal friend. It is his loyalty to his friend Fritz that leads him on this next adventure.

Fritz Daggard -   Fritz is an ambitious young man dealing struggling to deal with the dark influence of the green dagger he possesses. His good nature conflicts with the evil power of the blade and this turmoil causes him to be angry, frustrated, and sometimes just plain mean. He loves Rani, but his hateful behavior has driven a wedge between them and this irritates him even more. The pull of the dagger is a tremendous weight on Fritz and he is desperate to find a way to counteract and control its power.

Krigger Krigger is a Rodentian; sort of a humanoid rat with great skills of stealth and thievery. He is tall and wiry with silky black fur and protruding front teeth. He is much stronger than his appearance would suggest . Although brilliant as a thief, he can often be immature, even childlike. He is good-hearted and enjoys having fun, even if that fun might sometimes irritate those around him. Krigger’s loyalty to Fritz comes both from what he perceives as a friendship with the boy and from the profits he gains by doing Fritz’s bidding. Also, Krigger’s curiosity about the mysterious dagger and its potential value keeps him close by.

Excerpt

He pulled out the dagger and held it in front of him. "You don't control me!" he said. "I'm not a monster." He held the dagger above his head, ready to throw it and be rid of it, but he couldn't stand the thought of losing it. He collapsed to his knees, bringing his arm down and resting the blade on his lap. He pictured Rani crying on the floor after he had attacked her. He could hear the sickening snap of her arm breaking as she fell. He remembered Beynn lying unconscious and bleeding. "I am a monster," he said into the dark.

For My Son

(What inspired me to write)

by Kelly Hess

Routine. As a parent, routines can be a lifesaver. Having a consistent nighttime routine can turn the unbearable nightmare of bedtime into a much more bearable nightmare. Reading has been a big part of my son’s bedtime routine. Every night since he has been old enough to understand words, we have squeezed into a big chair together and read. We’ve covered everything from the entire collection of Dr. Seuss up through the Harry Potter series. Sometimes I read, sometimes he reads, but it happens every single night. I like to think it calms him and it prepares him mentally that it’s time to go to sleep.

A few years ago when my son was eight, we came to the end of another good book. The next day, we searched high and low through our bookshelves for another literary adventure to dive into, but nothing seemed appropriate or even interesting for a young imaginative boy. Well after eight years of reading, I felt I knew my son’s tastes, so on a whim, I decided that I would write something I knew he’d enjoy. I sat myself down at the computer and after a couple of false starts, I  began writing the story that would eventually become my first book, Eyes of the Enemy. I grew up reading Fantasy and Science Fiction, so I naturally gravitated to those genres. I named my protagonist Beynn, which my son quickly recognized to be an anagram of his own name. (Benny)
I have always enjoyed writing short stories and such but had never imagined that I could write a complete novel. I really had no intention to write anything but a little story to read with my son, but as the tale evolved and snowballed, I knew that I had a book to write. And as it turned out, I actually had a trilogy of books to write. Unfortunately, as my little story grew, it went beyond a typical eight-year-old reading level. Don’t worry though; my son and I found other age-appropriate books to read at the library, and much to my joy, he was able to come back and read all of my books within a few years.
