Ava McKenzie is a creature of habit. Life is passing her by and she has nothing to show for it. She’s had the same job since she started college, she orders the same dish every time she goes to her favorite restaurant, and only reads books from authors she knows. There is nothing new or surprising in her life… until her best friend marries a man from London. When her newlywed friend asks her to house-sit while she honeymoons, Ava jumps at the chance. She thinks this could be the very thing she needs to shake up her life. Ava throws herself head first into her new lifestyle; she wants to try everything, go everywhere, and never get stuck in a rut again. Of course, offing a man in a car garage hadn’t been one of the things on her list to try.

Owen Walker spends every day in a new place with a new case. As one of the most renowned assassins in the world, he has his choice of marks—and he’s never failed in a mission. When a new hit takes him back to his hometown, he looks forward to spending time somewhere familiar. What he isn’t expecting is to help an attractive, confused American woman find out how she’s ended up on a hit man’s list.

As Ava and Owen dodge bullets, will they be able to escape their undeniable attraction to each other? Or will all of that chemistry blow up in a shower of hot and dangerous sparks?

EXCERPT
I didn’t say anything, not wanting to turn his ire in my direction. When he ducked into a quiet alley and turned to look at me, I felt my blood pressure rocket. Gone was the gentle man that had offered me sliced apples and teased me about my romance book. I was staring into the eyes of the man that killed people for a living.

“Owen?”

“Why? Why would you agree to go in there with her?” He stepped toward me and I took a step back. “With a woman that is suggesting she use you as bait? What part of that sounds like a good idea? You don’t even know her.”

“I—”

“You could be killed, Ava. I’m trying to protect you and you offer yourself up as the sacrificial lamb!” He took another step toward me, but I had nowhere to go. Cool brick and the hard edges of the pistol pressed into my back.

“It’s—”

“You don’t belong in this mess. You’re going to get hurt.” His eyes bored into mine. “I’m taking you to another safe house and locking you up there. I’ll come back in the morning and deal with Mavis.”

“The hell you are!” I shoved his shoulder. “You’re not locking me up anywhere! I’m in this, Owen! I’m at least going to help get myself out of it. And what about Tess? I still don’t know if she’s in danger.”

“I don’t care about Tess!” He growled the words. Slapping his hands against the wall, he barricaded me between his arms and glared down at me. “I care about you!”

My heart thumped hard against my chest as I stared up at him. Cared about me? How had that happened? I opened my mouth and shut it, not sure how to respond.

“Damn it. In a few short days you’ve turned my entire life upside down. You’re everything I’ve always avoided.” His words were quiet, but there was a desperation underlining them. “You’re too good for me and I’m the death of everything that makes you perfect. You should be running in the opposite direction and instead you look at me with those big eyes and easy smile and I…” He shook his head as if lost.

“Owen.” My stomach clenched tightly as my mind tried to understand what he was telling me. “I care about you, too.”

“I’m wrong for you, Ava, but damn if I can help the way I feel.” His hands moved to cup my face and his lips touched mine in a fierce declaration of need.

REVIEW

A great mix of fun and suspense, this book was an absolute delight.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters and was extremely intrigued by Owen and his profession. The event that brought him and Ava together only fuelled my need to know more, and as the story developed so the more twisted it became. With the deadly underworld on their heels, they found themselves fighting to survive while trying to figure out what exactly was going on between them.

I liked that their blossoming romance wasn’t what drove this story. It was an important factor that shaped them the deeper they fell, but their mission to put an end to the chaos was first and foremost on their minds.

I really loved Ava. She was sass and sweetness all rolled into one, and she really had some witty thoughts that made me smile. She seemed to take everything in her stride, realizing that she had to stay strong if it meant helping uncover a sick and twisted organization. Mavis was another great character. She was kickass and never apologized for being who she was. I loved her fierceness.

This book was exciting, and with some added humour and romance it was an all round great read.

The American Royalty Series is coming!!! Here's the scoop!!

We have a fantastic announcement from Nichole Chase today, and we cannot wait to share it with you! Are you ready?

HERE’S THE SCOOP!

Fans of Nichole Chase’s Royal Series, get ready to cheer!

The American Royalty Series is coming!!!

HarperCollins will be publishing Nichole’s new series The American Royalty Series in Winter 2016, and you are NOT going to want to miss what Nichole has up her sleeve!

Things to Expect from The American Royalty Series:
  • Humor and witty banter
  • West Wing meets Scandal meets Suddenly Royal Mashup, anyone?
  • A cameo (or two) from the Royal Series
  • Drama
  • Jake. Jake. Jake.
  • Um….did I mention Jake?
  • The easy and beautiful writing you’ve come to know and love from Nichole Chase

A Message from Nichole:

I'm very excited to be working with HarperCollins to bring the American Royalty series to life. I'm very interested in the life of politics--there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that most people never hear about and it intertwines with our daily government and in some ways, affecting everyone. As I was thinking about that fact, Jake and Maddie's story began to take form and I found myself enthralled by the challenges they would face and just what their happy-ever-after would entail, if there could *be* a happy-ever-after.

About Book 1 (Title To Be Announced) in The American Royalty Series:

Color me jaded, but coming home just isn’t the same when you have to go through security before you can see your dad. Don’t get me wrong, everyone had to go through security to see my dad. Even Kings, Queens, celebrities, my step-mother and half-brother we’re given the metal detector treatment. It wasn’t like I was a hooligan being singled out. It’s just part of life when your father is president. Go figure.

Maddie’s father is in his second term as president and she could care less. Being a politician’s child has made her world weary and leery of being manipulated. When she comes home from college for her summer break, she thinks it’s the last time she’ll be in the white house. Her father’s term is almost over and she’ll finally be able to live the life she wanted. What she doesn’t count on is facing her nemesis, Jake Simmon, back from the war. As the son of the Vice President, she had constantly been paired with him for events and during campaign tours. The tabloids loved to speculate about a possible relationship, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Jake was the perfect politician’s son. He always did as he was asked, always smiled, and to her absolute horror always looked dreamy.

In other words, he was her exact opposite.

Jake was finally home, but he couldn’t wait to escape. Instead of searching for peace and quiet after losing his leg in Afghanistan, he was sitting in on campaign meetings and giving interviews. He had never felt so helpless in his life, not even after waking strapped to a table in a blistering hot med tent. His mother was intent on using his brand new disability as a campaign tool. Show off her wounded son so people would find her relatable. The only positive thing he had to focus on was the fact that he would get to see Maddie again, which was pathetic when you considered that they hated each other. She’d always gotten under his skin, throwing caution to the wind and doing what she’d wanted while he had walked the line. In a world where everyone looked at him with sympathy, he knew she wouldn’t hold back. And though he was loathe to admit it, one of his favorite past times was verbally sparring with the spunky brunette. What he isn’t counting on is how much they have both changed over the last two years.

I twisted the steering wheel sharply as I exited the garage and almost knocked over the doorman. But he was holding a large gun in one hand and to my shock he fired directly at my window. The glass shattered, but I didn’t feel any pain, which I hoped meant I wasn’t hit. I ducked in a belated reaction and the car swerved wildly, but the gun-toting hottie next to me steadied the wheel.
“I knew that doorman didn’t like me.” I gritted my teeth. “What an asshole. He’s almost as bad as you are.”
“I’ll drive now, if you’d like.” He said it like we were taking turns on a road trip, not running for our lives. Maybe he wasn’t running for his life. But I was still running for mine. I didn’t know what this guy wanted with me. Was I supposed to just let him drive me to some creepy kill room? An image of walls draped in plastic, knives on a table, and a bed with chains filled my mind. I didn’t think so.
“Now? You want to drive now?” My voice rose with each word. “Sure, I’ll pull over at the corner for a snack and let you take over. Holy shit! Are you crazy?”
“Has anyone ever told you that for such a beautiful woman you have a very dirty mouth?” He smiled at me as my mouth worked silently. “I think I like the odd combination.”
“Fuck you.” I glared at the road.
“So does that mean you don’t want me to drive?” He nodded toward the traffic that was growing thicker. “Do you have a plan for where to go?”
“The cops.” I didn’t mention that I had no idea where they would be located. I’d just stop the first one I saw. “And you told me to get in the driver seat.”
“You’re sure you want to go to the police?” He leaned back into his seat, getting comfortable. He looked, for all the world, as if riding around in a car with a bomb attached to it was normal. “You killed a man and fled the scene in his stolen car—which has a bomb attached to it. Oh, and someone was trying to kill you. I’m sure being locked in a tiny room with nowhere to run will make their job much more difficult.”
“Maybe they were trying to kill you. I can imagine why they’d want to.” I growled and turned down a street that was one way only. And I was going the wrong way. I muttered under my breath as I dodged cars and people honked at me. “I should’ve stayed in bed today.”
“Possibly. They were very sloppy.” He pointed to a street. “You should turn here and take the roundabout.”
“Roundabout?” My heart dropped into my stomach and I broke into a cold sweat. “That seems like a bad idea.”
Roundabouts were the devil. If you’ve ever tried to drive through a roundabout after years of driving in America, you’d understand. Everything was completely backward to how you instinctually drove. It gave me an ulcer just thinking about it.
“We’re being followed. We need to lose them.” He looked at me with serious eyes. “If you want to live, we need to put distance between us and the people in the black sedan.”
“Oh, Jesus.” I jerked the wheel and our car shot down the road toward the evil traffic circle of death.

Maxwell Jameson Trevor, prince of Lilaria, hates his royal role. Despising the limelight, he takes solace in his art studio and steers clear of any drama. But when one of the newly discovered royals passes away, Maxwell's brother Alex asks him to break the news to the old man's granddaughter. Though he hates to be the bearer of doom and gloom, he doesn't want the poor girl to find out from the tabloids. For Maxwell knows all too well how devastating that could be.

Coming from a broken home and modest background, newly ordained Lady Meredith Thysmer has seized her chance to make a better life for herself and her son. She's not afraid to use her best assets to get what she wants. But when the unpretentious yet devastatingly handsome Max delivers his news, her plans for the future come crashing to a halt. In the challenging days ahead, Max's compassion, humor, and steadfast loyalty to Meredith and her son win her over. She quickly finds herself doing something she swore would never happen again: falling in love. And yet Maxwell still refuses to completely drop his guard. Somehow Meredith's got to find a way to seduce this reluctant royal.

EXCERPT

As I turned to leave the room, my eyes fell on a sketch pad and I couldn’t help myself. Sitting back down in the chair I flipped it open and smiled at the drawings inside. Marty had promise for such a young kid. Turning to a blank page, I glanced around and searched for a pencil. Charcoal would be best, but pencil would do.

I started with the lines of his forehead, the curve of his impish nose, the roundness of his cheeks. I was lost in the sketch, enjoying the shadows, the tenderness in his expression, working to capture that moment of utter innocence.

“That’s beautiful.” Her voice was soft.

I looked up from what I was doing, not surprised that she had snuck up on me. When I’m lost in a project, the world disappears; the only thing I’m aware of are the layers of the project I’m working on.

“He’s a good subject.” I turned back to the paper and finished up the shading of the blanket.

“Only because he’s asleep and not moving.” Her quiet laugh sent shivers over my body.

“That does help.” I smiled up at her. “But it’s the contrast. The contrast of him awake versus him asleep. He looks so young right now, so innocent.”

“What do you mean?” She leaned closer to look at the picture.

“He’s so mature, quick-witted.” I whispered the words. “But here he is, looking like the child he is.”

“His teachers say that,” she said. “That he’s quick to pick things up.”

“I’d say so.” I turned and handed her the sketch pad. “I hope you don’t mind that I drew him. The light and shadows were too perfect to resist.” Sort of like her right now. The way the moonlight glinted in her eyes and shone along her hair. Her perfect features would make any artist ache to draw them. Her pixie nose, the heavy eyelashes, the curve of her body hinted at by the oversized sweater she had wrapped around herself. It made my palms itch. Partly because I just wanted to touch her, to see if she would taste as sweet as she looked in that moment.

“Thank you for keeping him entertained.” She stood up. “Can I keep this?”

“Of course.” I stood up and stretched. Her eyes swept over my chest and then back up to my face. Maybe I wasn’t the only one tempted to touch. I hated to admit it, but I had a flare of pride. “I enjoyed hanging out with him.”

I was surprised to realize I meant it. I never would have thought spending time with a six-year-old would have been enjoyable.

“Looks like he did too.” She moved away from the door and I followed her into the hallway.

“Did you get everything settled?”

“I think so.” She frowned.

“What’s wrong?” Her expression worried me.

“Granddad would have hated a large ceremony.” She sighed and headed for the stairs. “But I guess that as a duke there are some things that have to happen.”

“I don’t blame your grandfather.” I followed behind her. “I would want a small ceremony, not to be made into a production.”

“I’m starting to think you don’t like any type of production.” She looked at me over shoulder.

“Not really, no.” I wasn’t going to lie. “I don’t like being the focus, being the center of attention. It makes me uncomfortable.” I wasn’t going to lie, but I hadn’t intended to tell her so much about me.

“And yet you agreed to help me with my grandfather’s funeral.” She turned to me at the bottom of the stairs and set the sketch pad on a table. “Why?”

I stared at her for a minute, enjoying the way her eyes looked up at me, the tilt of her chin, the way her hair cascaded around her shoulders. “I don’t know.”
Unable to help myself, I reached out and touched her cheek with my fingers. Her pupils dilated and she inhaled softly. With one thumb I traced the dip under her plump bottom lip. Her hand reached up to trace my jaw and she took a step closer to me.

“You should be running from me as fast as you can.” She whispered the words. “I’m everything you don’t want.”

“I’m not so sure.”

“I live for the spotlight, it’s my food.” Her eyes were half lidded as she edged closer to my mouth. “And you’ve seen my family. I’m trouble, Max.”
Did I care? I wasn’t sure I was capable of making a real decision as her smell wrapped around my senses. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to taste her, to touch her, to press her against my body. To hear her say my name again.

Dipping my head, I grazed her lips with mine and I was lost. On a sigh, she leaned into me and wrapped her hands around my neck. Tilting her head back, I brought my mouth to hers carefully, softly, tasting. I wanted to deepen the kiss, to hear her moan, to feel the way her body could wrap around mine, but I kept it soft, sweet, and simple. She was in such a hard place, she needed to be protected, treasured by someone.

And right now, I was that person.

REVIEW

I've read both the first and second books in this series, and to be honest, I don't really remember Max all that well, but boy...oh, boy, did he make an impression on me in this book.

It was great catching up with some of my favorite characters, whilst getting to know new or previously minor characters. It felt like I'd been away and had come home to Lilaria for a quick visit - to catch up on all the royal gossip.

Max was swoonworthy. I loved how protective he was of not only Meredith, but also little Marty. In fact, some of my favorite and most memorable moments of this story are of the times Max spent with Marty. It was sweet and just showed how amazing Max was. Marty was such a lovable kid and it was easy to see why everyone was so taken by him. It was just a pity that, other than his grandfather, he had no strong male role models in his life and I think that was why it was so fantastic that he and Max bonded so quickly.

I didn't connect with Meredith quite like I did with Sam and Cathy, but that poor women went through so many life changes in such a short amount of time and my heart ached for her. Struggling with the loss of her grandfather and having to put up with an abusive father, she still had to stay strong for her son. I was just glad she had Max, and the rest of the royal family, to lean on even though she was reluctant to reach out to them in the beginning.

This story was a sweet romance with plenty of depth and emotion. The characters had their ups and downs, but with amazing friends and family they were able to pull through, and the love and happiness they deserved. This was a lovely addition to this series.
