TSG Blitz banner

We are so excited to bring you the Excerpt Blitz for Christopher Rice's THE SURRENDER GATE! THE SURRENDER GATE is an Adult Fantasy and the first book in Christopher’s Desire Exchange Series!

  The Surrender Gate Cover

Amazon Kindle ** Amazon Paperback

New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice’s first foray into erotic romance, THE FLAME, earned accolades from some of the genre’s most beloved authors. “Sensual, passionate and intelligent,” wrote Lexi Blake, “it’s everything an erotic romance should be.” J. Kenner called it “absolutely delicious,” Cherise Sinclair hailed it as “beautifully lyrical” and Loreli James announced, “I look forward to reading more!” Now, Christopher returns you to the world first introduced in THE FLAME with an all new novel of The Desire Exchange…

Emily Blaine’s life is about to change. Arthur Benoit, the kindly multi-millionaire who has acted as her surrogate father for years, has just told her he’s leaving her his entire estate, and he only has a few months to live. Soon Emily will go from being a restaurant manager with a useless English degree to one of the richest and most powerful women in New Orleans. There’s just one price. Arthur has written a letter to his estranged son Ryan he hopes will mend the rift between them, and he wants Emily to deliver the letter before it’s too late. But finding Ryan won’t be easy. He’s been missing for years. He was recently linked to a mysterious organization called The Desire Exchange. But is The Desire Exchange just an urban legend? Or are the rumors true? Is it truly a secret club where the wealthy can live out their most private fantasies?

It’s a task Emily can’t undertake alone. But there’s only one man qualified to help her, her gorgeous and confident best friend, Jonathan Claiborne. She’s suspected Jonathan of working as a high-priced escort for months now, and she’s willing to bet that Jonathan has uncovered some possible leads to The Desire Exchange—and to Ryan Benoit. But Emily’s attempt to uncover Jonathan’s secret life lands the two of them in hot water. Literally. In order to escape the clutches of one of Jonathan’s most powerful and dangerous clients, they must act on long buried desires—for each other.

When Emily’s mission turns into an undercover operation, Jonathan insists on going with her. He also insists they continue to explore their impossible, reckless passion for each other. Enter Marcus Dylan, the hard-charging ex-Navy SEAL Arthur has hired to keep Emily safe. But Marcus has ulterior motives for taking the job; he, too, has a burning passion for Emily, and he turns out to be as rough and controlling as Jonathan is sensual and reckless. As Emily searches for a place where the rich turn their fantasies into reality, she will also be forced to decide which one of her own long-ignored fantasies should become her reality. But as Emily, Jonathan, and Marcus draw closer to The Desire Exchange itself, they find their destination isn’t just shrouded in mystery, but in magic as well.

“I’m sorry,” Marcus says.
“For?”
“For the fact you so totally and completely misinterpreted what I said.”
“I’m hanging up now. It’s a little late for mansplaining.”
“And for not turning you around and taking you right over the hood of that Aston Martin to show you how wrong you were.”
Her breath catches, but another Emily responds. “Charming,” she whispers.
“Your hand seems to think so,” he says.
He’s right. The warmth she’s been feeling against her thigh is coming from her own palm. Just the sound of his voice has charmed her fingers onto her thigh. And he can see it all. The parted taffeta drapes blowing in the breeze, the tangle of silk sheets sliding down across her white T-shirt, the rise and fall of her chest as she tries to get back the breath he just stole from her.
“It’s not gonna be that easy,” she says.
“What? What isn’t going to be that easy, Miss Blaine?”
“Put a little distance between us and then you turn into Christian Grey, when there’s no risk and you don’t have to—”
“Don’t have to what?”
“I want to hear what you said.”
“When?”
“Arthur said he assigned you to me because you made some comments about me that got back to him. I want to hear them. The comments.”
“They weren’t comments,” Marcus says.
“Then what were they?”
“Observations.”
“About my weight?”
“About your eyes. You were coming down off the front porch of the main house one day and when the sunlight hit your eyes, they were so beautiful they looked like a painting.”
“Well, now…that’s kinda sweet.”
“And then I said if I ever get inside that woman I’m going to do whatever it takes to make her look into my eyes the whole time. To make her feel like there’s no one else except for me, and nothing else in the world except for what I’m doing to her body.”
She hopes her sharp intake of breath is too soft for the microphones to pick up, but she doubts it. And besides, her silence is telling enough.
“Watch that hand, Emily.”
“Is that how you said it? In exactly those words?”
“I said it in a way Scott could understand. He was the other guy on duty that day. He doesn’t read books with big words. Just magazines with big guns.”
“I see…”
“I see too,” he says. “But I’d like to see more.”
Before she can think twice about it, she draws the sheet back a few inches, exposing the crotch of her panties to the ocean breeze, revealing it to the darkened bedroom and it’s myriad of hidden but prying eyes. Revealing it to Marcus’s tortured hunger for her, on which he seems to temporarily lose his grip every few hours or so.
Me, I’m the reason he loses control. I’m the thing he wants but doesn’t want to want…yet.
Fear sends gooseflesh up her thighs, fear of being exposed, fear of moving too fast, fear of giving too much of herself away too soon. But they’re her thighs and her panties, goddammit, and for the time being, this is her bedroom, and she’s technically alone, so what is there to be afraid of—
“Are the cameras recording?” she asks the darkness.
“Not unless I tell them to.”
“Don’t tell them to.”
“Then show me more. Quid pro quo, you know.”
“Never reference Silence of the Lambs when you’re trying to get a woman naked.”
“You have a real mouth on you, Miss Blaine. Do you know that?”
“I do. And that’s why you keep talking to me.”
“Or it’s just my job.”
“There are other jobs, with quieter people.”
“Smart girl.”
She tries to suppress a smile. Beneath the sheet, she works her arms out from her T-shirt, then slides the entire thing up and over her head before dropping it to the carpet. Just at the moment when Marcus probably believes she’s about expose her breasts to the open air, she rolls over onto her stomach.
Marcus growls.

“You’re staring at me again,” I said.
“I know. I can’t help it. You’re an interesting and extraordinary person.” Well, I wouldn’t go that far.
Our cupcakes arrived and distracted both of us.
“F*ck me gently with a chainsaw, this is so good,” I said as I took a bite of the Oreo cookie. All of the cupcakes here were filled with extra frosting, so it oozed out when you bit into it.
“Holy sh*t,” Ryder said, taking a bite of the Red Velvet. He got frosting on his nose, and I laughed.
“You’ve got a little something on your nose,” I said.
“Get it for me?” he asked. I thought about wiping it with a napkin, but used my finger instead.
“Thanks,” he said.
“No problem.” We went back to our cupcakes, and I considered ordering more because they were just so damn good.
“Life will never be the same,” I said. “This is all your fault. Now I’m going to be addicted to this place, and I will have no money because I spent it all on cupcakes. I’m going to get so fat. Are you happy now?” I asked, scraping the last of the bits of cupcake off my plate. I thought about licking the crumbs, but that seemed like a bad idea in public.
“You know, I think they deliver,” he said, wiping his face with a napkin.
“Shut the f*ck up right now. You are kidding.”
He held up the menu and pointed to the part that said they delivered anywhere in the city.
“You bastard,” I said, grabbing the menu from him and typing the number into my phone so I could use it to call anytime I wanted cupcakes, which would be always.
“How about I buy you another round? Drinks and cupcakes.”
I shook my head. “No, you bought the tea and cronuts. It’s my turn to pay for something.”
He sighed heavily.
“If this was a date, which it isn’t, you could pay. But it’s not a date. So you lose, fire crotch,” I said.
He choked on his seltzer water and sprayed it over the bar. That earned him nasty looks from those around us, but the bartender just handed us a stack of napkins with a smile.
“You two are cute together,” she said.
“Who, us?” I asked.
“Yes, you. How long have you been together?”
I looked at Ryder, wondering how we should handle this. He just put his arm around me and turned toward the bartender.
“Three months,” he said. “It’s our anniversary.” The f*ck? I gave him a stunned look and he just winked at me.
“Isn’t that right, baby?” Ugh. I hated it when guys called their girlfriends baby. It was so degrading. Or at least I’d thought it was degrading. But that was before Ryder called me baby and it made me feel all giggly.
He squeezed my shoulder, as if asking me to play along. Oh, what the hell.
“That’s right, sweetie. Three glorious months.” I smiled at the bartender, and she leaned in so she wouldn’t be overheard.
“How about I bring you something special? On the house.”
“Um, sure,” I said. “That’s so nice of you.”
“Really, thank you,” Ryder added.
She waved off the thanks. “It’s nothing. I’m just a fan of people in love. I think it should be celebrated, especially with cupcakes. I’ll be right back.”
She vanished and came back a few moments later with a cupcake that was so large, it was the size of three normal cupcakes. There was something stuck in it that she lighted which turned out to be a small sparkler.
“Congratulations,” she said, and then headed off to take more orders. The people around us all stared.
“They probably think it’s one of our birthdays,” I said to Ryder.
“Probably. We should blow that out before it sets something on fire.” He had a good point. He picked up the sparkler and doused it in the rest of his seltzer water.
“That’s one way to do it,” I said, and picked up my fork. The cupcake was vanilla with a creamy white marshmallow frosting, and it was filled with what was almost like raw cake batter with sprinkles.
“How is it?” Ryder asked, watching me as I chewed and swallowed with relish.
“Have a bite and see,” I said, pointing to his fork.
He did and banged his fist on the table. “Damn, that is good.”
We slowly ate the rest of the giant cupcake. Good thing I didn’t eat dinner or else I might not have managed it. I finished my third bellini and leaned over on the bar. It was probably dirty, but I didn’t care.
“You happy we came here?” he asked, pushing aside the now-empty plate.
“Happy. Full of cake. Same thing.”
“Agreed.”

EXCERPT

“Better,” Carl said, slinging his suit jacket into the backseat of the Packard. It was a nice car. The salary Carl offered was better than average for a teacher. He could obviously afford luxuries that most folks couldn’t. His material wealth was sure to make him desirable to any woman, but as he smiled at me with his Montana sky blue eyes, putting the car back into gear and waving to a passing motorist, all I could think about was the way the breeze was ruffling his sandy blonde hair. The way he smiled when he said my name, as though his words were the refrain of his favorite song. The way he made me feel when his fingers brushed my skin. Whether or not I should roll up my shirt sleeves, in hopes of an accidental touch.
Carl talked at length about Wedlock, and I thought I should like to explore it with him, but every time I tried to answer his narrative with a question, I felt the strain of my emotions rising against me. For the first time in my life I was conscious of how I came off, and I was paralyzed with anxiety over saying the wrong thing. I wanted to be as charming as he was. I wanted to do my job as a teacher well. I wanted to see the children again. I didn’t want to ruin my chance at building a life here, with or without a handsome companion like Carl.
I kept my mouth shut, even if it made me appear dull and foolish. I was more afraid of opening it and cementing the impression.
As Carl followed Harville into the parking lot of a restaurant in Missoula I was so uptight with the stress and pressure of my new life, I entertained regrets about the choice to come to Montana at all.
Carl turned off the car and turned to face me. “You’ve been awful quiet the past few hours.”
“A lot on my mind.”
“The children?”
I nodded.
“Now, take heart. They close the railway down in winter, anyway, so you’d have to wait for spring in either case. This way, you can set up house, get to know the community and the students—“
Harville climbed down from his wagon and scratched his bum, spitting into the dirt.
“And the special students, like Harville. By the time six months of teaching have passed, you’ll have everything you need for your brothers and sister. Home ain’t built in a day, you know.”
“I think the saying is ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day.’”
He smiled. “That, too, Miss Chastity. That, too.”
I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t meant to stare into his blue eyes while he was talking. I hadn’t meant to lose myself in the sound of his voice.

Carl leaned in, smiling. “I hope you’ll want to stay, Miss Chastity.” He hovered so close, I thought he might reach out and touch my cheek, but he turned and quickly slipped out of the Packard, instead. “C’mon. Let’s grab a bite. Harville’s likely to propose to the barmaid if we don’t get in there fast.”

The book will be released April 14th and is currently up for pre-order.

FINDING MY WAY Excerpt Blitz

“Liam?”

I turn at the sound of my grandmother calling my name. She beams at me when I step toward her with an out stretched hand.

“I want to you meet a friend of mine,” she says. “Liam this is Tess and her son Harrison James. Tess is the personal assistant to my casting agent.” We spent a day going over all the jobs in the industry. There are so many that I got lost and like a true grandma, she made a list for me so I wouldn’t forget. “Harrison plays the drums at a club called Metro. They have open mic nights if you’re interested in talking to him about it,” she whispers. I nod, acknowledging what she’s telling me.

I step forward and shake both their hands. “It’s nice to meet you both,” I say.

“You too, Liam, your grandmother has told me so much about you. She’s very happy you’ve decided to stay with her.” I look at my grandma who is smiling from ear to ear.

She pats my arm. “Why don’t you take Harrison out back and show him around?”

“Okay, grandma.” I kiss her on the cheek and signal toward the patio door. Harrison follows, stepping out into the early evening sun. I walk until I’m at the back, where there is a table set up.

“Sorry about my grandmother in there. I think she’s trying to make up for all the years we’ve missed.” I sit down and lean my chair up against the tree.

“It’s okay. I was pretty much forced to come here tonight.” I inspect Harrison. He’s a bit taller than I am and far skinnier. He has a few tattoos on his arms, making wonder if they’re a necessity in the music industry. I quickly look down at my arms, curious as to what they’d look like with inked etched on them. One thing is for certain, my parents would flip and that thought alone makes me want one.

“Because of me?” I ask already knowing the answer but needing the confirmation.

He nods. “Yeah,” he says without making eye contact. “My mom is close to your grandmother so they plotted and here I am.”

“I’m sorry. If you want to leave, I can make up some excuse.” I know what it feels like to be put in awkward situations. My dad has done it to me many times, which only spurred me to withdraw from him more and more.

Harrison shakes his head slightly. “I’m cool.” He looks down at the ground or his feet. It’s not like I want to stare, but I’m trying to figure him out. He runs his hand over his beanie, moving it back and forth before leaving it where it originally was.
