Why Fantasy?

When I tell people that I write fantasy, often their first question is, “why fantasy?” I suppose I could write suspense, mystery, or even contemporary fiction. It isn’t such a stretch for me to imagine myself seeking a story beyond the fantasy genre. But to me, fantasy brings to light the very things that make us who we are.

The ability to contemplate fantasy, is what makes us human. Even as small children, once we’ve learned who mommy is and how to crawl, we are exposed to the fantastical realm of the imagination. Our first stories are of magical creatures, gallant heroes, beautiful maidens, and far away kingdoms. Through fantasy, we learn honor, perseverance, bravery, and love. The noblest aspects of the human character is taught to us through make-believe and flights of fancy.

As adults, we often times forget these beginnings, and choose to leave “childish” things behind. We ground ourselves in stark reality, and set in our mind the bare facts of day to day living. We no longer believe that Snow White was brought back to life by the kiss of true love. We understand that dragons are not real. We fail see the magic that once was as factual as the air we breathe.

With fantasy, we can revisit the part of us that still wants to believe. Sure, I could choose a different genre, but for me, the wonder I find in fantasy fills my heart with delight. And when I am able to share it with others, I feel as if I have made the magic of childhood come back to life. For a few hours, I have rendered the wicked world of adulthood powerless, and allowed someone to forget how cruel life can be.

Brian D. Anderson debuted as an indie author in fall 2012 with The Godling Chronicles, a multi-book young adult fantasy series from GMTA Publishing that sold 10,000 copies in just the first three months.

The continued and growing success of his first two titles, Book One: The Sword of Truth and Book Two: Of God and Elves, allowed Anderson to start writing full-time. He releases the third installment of his series this spring, and is already at work on the fourth and fifth novels.

 

Anderson was born in 1971 in the small town of Spanish Fort, Alabama and lived throughout the coastal state also in Fairhope and Mobile during college, where he developed a love of fantasy novels.

He lived and worked in New York for years with his wife and son – who created the original concept for The Godling Chronicles – and the family is heading back down south for a beach life in Pensacola, Florida.

About the Author

 

Stephanie Alexander grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC, the oldest of three children. Drawing, writing stories, and harassing her parents for a pony consumed much of her childhood. After graduating from high school in 1995 she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the College of Charleston, South Carolina. She returned to Washington, DC, where she followed a long-time fascination with sociopolitical structures and women’s issues to a Master of Arts in Sociology from the American University. She spent several years as a Policy Associate at the International Center for Research on Women, a think-tank focused on women’s health and economic advancement.

Her academic and professional background influenced multiple themes in THE CRACKED SLIPPER, including:

• Patriarchy and power dynamics
• Education and economic independence
• The ramifications of early childhood experiences

Stephanie embraced full-time motherhood after the birth of the first of her three children in 2003. After six wonderful years buried in diapers and picture books she returned to her childhood passion and wrote her own fairytale. Her family put down permanent southern roots in Charleston in 2011. She is a member of the Women's Fiction Chapter of Romance Writers of America and the Bethesda Writer’s Center, and an alumna of the Algonkian NYC Pitch and Shop Conference.

REVIEW

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The thing that immediately struck me was how much Sinns has grown as a writer. The story flowed really well and the dialogue was more relaxed and not so stilted. There were still a few grammatical issues but they didn't draw away from the story as much as they did in I've Got You Covered.

This is a very unique story, and the second instalment of The Blazing Charm series, was just as exciting as the first book, if not more. The thrills continue as Ani, John, Naomi and Kyri head to New York. Ani's past comes back to haunt her as she is faced with the very people who tried to kill her. John does everything he can to protect her, but with far too many close calls, Ani does the only thing she knows to do - she runs as far from her problems as she can, hoping to protect those she loves dearly.

There were times when this story was predictable but I liked that life wasn't too easy for the characters. Just as I thought they were clear of danger, something else came by and shook things up. And the ending, Oh my gosh!! Talk about a cliffhanger!! I wanted to hurl my Kindle across the room...Toni G. Sinns, you are evil. LOL.

This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

I was so excited to be given the opportunity to read this amazing book.

 

The story is fast paced, thrilling and there is never a dull moment, as Jess tries to settle into her new life as vampire. But there is far more to her than meets the eye and I was enthralled as the mystery of her true bloodline was uncovered. The story adds a new twist to the ever popular vampire myth, with a uniqueness that was quite refreshing.

I did find Jess to be a little whiny at first, but then I guess with everything she was going through it was acceptable. Her entire life had been destroyed and her hurt and confusion only fueled her anger at becoming a submissive vampire (at least that’s what was expected of her) who would no longer get to see the people she loved. The fact that they were so close must have been torture.

This book is filled with many interesting characters. I loved Eva, she was kick-ass!! And Daniel…hmm…sweet, caring, undead Daniel. He was so patient with Jess and the special little moments shared between them sent a jolt of joy through my heart. I enjoyed the way their relationship developed. Even though Jess was attracted to him from the first time she saw him, she didn’t fall head-over-heels. And Daniel never once pushed her to feel something more for him.

 

This book really drew me in and I couldn’t put it down. Readers of paranormal romances will love this story. If you are tired of the usual vampire story, grab a copy of WitchBlood, it will not disappoint.

SYNOPSIS

REVIEW

This isn't the type of book I'd normally choose to read, but I was intrigued by the synopsis enough that I decided to give it a go.

 

The story started off at a slow pace. I was introduced to quite a few characters at the very beginning and I had to find my bearings before I was able to settle into the story. I think I only really started to enjoy it once the family was on their way to the United States.

 

I enjoyed how each character developed throughout this book. Especially Gertie, she was definitely the hero of this story. Strong, independent, always looking out for those around her, and she seemed to really embrace Dora, even when her siblings didn't. She showed a high level of maturity, even from a young age, and it was her coming-of-age story that gave this book a spark of excitement.

 

I loved to see how each of the Tatens took to life in the US and how this land, that offered them so much, shaped them as the years went by. There were subtle changes in in each character and it was fun to see how American colloquialism wormed its way into their speech as they learned to speak English, and to adapt to the American way.

 

The story was inspirational and filled with so much hope. Even though the characters faced many obstacles, they never allowed fear to keep them from realizing their dreams, and this is the most important message I drew from this book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Cornelia Warmenhoven has led a storied life traveling the globe - twice around the world by boat and by plane. Cornelia is 87 years old. She was born in 1925, in the Netherlands, in the town of Hoofddorp, 10 miles from Amsterdam. As a volunteer psychiatric nurse during WWII, Cornelia joined the Dutch Resistance against the Nazis. Soon after the war ended, Cornelia married Henri Warmenhoven, a Dutch national who had grown up in Indonesia and who had been interned in a Japanese prison camp during the war. While Henri earned his degrees as a political scientist and lawyer, Cornelia lived with him and their son, George, in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Europe before the family settled permanently in the United States. Cornelia continued her nursing career, reported on local events, wrote travel stories for newspapers, and performed in the theater. Today, she makes her home in Virginia.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
 

Cornelia Warmenhoven has led a storied life traveling the globe - twice around the world by boat and by plane. Cornelia is 87 years old. She was born in 1925, in the Netherlands, in the town of Hoofddorp, 10 miles from Amsterdam. As a volunteer psychiatric nurse during WWII, Cornelia joined the Dutch Resistance against the Nazis. Soon after the war ended, Cornelia married Henri Warmenhoven, a Dutch national who had grown up in Indonesia and who had been interned in a Japanese prison camp during the war. While Henri earned his degrees as a political scientist and lawyer, Cornelia lived with him and their son, George, in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Europe before the family settled permanently in the United States. Cornelia continued her nursing career, reported on local events, wrote travel stories for newspapers, and performed in the theater. Today, she makes her home in Virginia.
