#HunterLewisBooks Spotlight + Review: Free Prices Now by Hunter Lewis

Hello, Therians!

I have a something a little (or more accurately, a lot) different for you all today! Non-fiction!!

However, this book tells of the horrors that plague our economic freedom that I kind of wish it were fiction!

Hardcover, $17
ISBN: 978-0-9887267-0-3
Business/Economics, 256 pages
AC2 Books, September 1, 2013

“Free Prices Now!” begins by asking why the human race is still so poor. How can it be that billions still lack even enough to eat? It then provides the answer. A prosperous society is a cooperative society. Cooperation in turn depends on trust. And trust requires honesty.
The most reliable barometer of economic honesty is to be found in prices. Honest prices, neither manipulated nor controlled, provide both investors and consumers with reliable economic signals. They are the foundation for a successful economy.

A corrupt economic system does not want honest prices, honest information, or honest results. The truth may be unprofitable for powerful government leaders, private interests allied with them, or economic “experts” whose careers have been devoted to price manipulations and controls.

The US Federal Reserve and other central banks have created a system of “liar loans” and false prices. Other parts of government have contributed as well. In effect, the regulators on whom we depend have become dis-regulators.

Can it really be this simple, that economic prosperity and job growth depend on allowing economic prices to tell the truth, free from the self-dealing and self-interested theories of powerful special interests?

Yes.

Although Lewis takes us inside the complexities of the national economy and the Federal Reserve, his lively and transparently clear writing style makes it easy for anyone to follow him.

“FREE PRICES NOW!”, “CRONY CAPITALISM IN AMERICA” EXPLAIN HOW SIMPLE HONESTY COULD SAVE AMERICA’S CRIPPLED ECONOMY
Two new books from investor-watchdog Hunter Lewis release this September

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Renowned investor and author Hunter Lewis shares his New York Times-heralded “highly provocative” opinions in his two newest economic management books, “Free Prices Now!: Fixing the Economy by Abolishing the Fed” and “Crony Capitalism in America: 2008-2012” (September 1,AC2 Books).

Co-founding a global investment firm and serving as an advisor to the International Monetary Fund and World Bank as well as leading universities, has given Lewis a unique perspective on America’s struggling economy, and how exactly to turn it around.

Just as in his previous six books, the Forbes-named “Business Visionary” translates complex economic concepts into clear, easier-to-grasp terms for his readers. His upcoming non-fiction releases deliver a one-two punch, exposing profound and little understood flaws in the management of the nation’s economy.

Free Prices Now!” offers a fascinating look at job loss, poverty and everything in between. Lewis boldly dissects the problems behind America’s economic crisis and offers a simple but sweeping solution: restore honest, un-manipulated prices in our economy. Former GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul says “Hunter Lewis shows why ending the Federal Reserve’s control over the monetary system is key to restoring prosperity and raising living standards for all Americans.”

Crony Capitalism in America” is especially for readers tired of hearing the same excuses for the nation’s economic meltdown. Lewis unflinchingly cuts through the confusion to show how bad economic policies lead to more and more corruption. In doing so, he provides a behind-the-scenes peek at powerful political circles that control America’s future. And again, he pushes the envelope with fresh, innovative solutions.

It rips back the curtain on the competition-crushing practices that emerge when political and corporate cronies align,” says Peter Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute and author of the New York Times bestseller “Throw Them All Out.”

Co-founder of AgainstCronyCapitalism.org, Lewis has also contributed articles to numerous international and financial publications and has been invited to give his expert opinion on the economy on ABC’s Money Matters, NBC’s Today and many other television and radio programs. As a philanthropist, Lewis has served on boards and committees of 15 not-for-profit organizations.

 REVIEW

Simply put, this book is an education.

If you’re someone who doesn’t put too much thought into the economy and the pivotal decisions our economic leaders are making, then this book is a definite MUST READ! It will open your eyes and give you real food for thought.

It’s no secret that most, if not all, Governments are wrought with corruption and greed, but Lewis sheds light on some of the finer details and the ramifications that affect the masses, as well as the importance of the consumer’s right and role in bringing about economic freedom.

Although this book is filled with plenty of economic and financial jargon that may be a bit too much for some readers, the message is loud and clear.

Free Prices. Breathe new life into our economy.

Right now there is a vicious circle that sees the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Imagine if that could be changed. Well it can, and it’s not that difficult to achieve. One of the most powerful things I took from this book is that the free price system will unleash an honest and trustworthy economy, where corruption cannot breed.

All I can say is, why has this not happened as yet? Why do we still find ourselves in economic slumps? Why do we give all the power to Government and Reserve Banks?

This is a book that everyone, no matter what your financial status is, needs to read. People tend to turn a blind eye and I think it’s due to a certain level of ignorance on our part, although it’s not exactly due to any fault of our own. It’s our right to be informed; however, we’re often kept in the dark. Lewis gives a brilliant account of the injustices that have rocked our economy, and it’s time we stood up and took notice.

Guilt. That is all I ever feel when I think about my mom. Now she's back in my life, always wanting something. Having her around makes it so easy for me to fall into those bad habits that get me into trouble. Skipping class, smoking weed, fooling around with girls that mean nothing to me...I'm messing up. The last thing I need is my sister on my case.

So I keep my mom's return a secret. But promising I'll get my grades back up on my own isn't enough. Fable makes me see a tutor. And Chelsea is the smartest girl I've ever met. She's definitely not my type but there's something about her that I'm drawn to. She's sweet, she's shy and she seems completely immune to my usual moves.

Chelsea has her own secrets and she's not talking. Like I have any room to judge. How can I get her to open up to me? And will I ever be able to convince her that what we have could be something real?

EXCERPT
Finn propped himself with one shoulder on the hardy oak, half his body cloaked by the shadows, hands in his jeans pockets. It only took me a second to find him.

“Emergency, huh? What’s going on, Ivy?” He reached for me and pulled me into a tight embrace, his lean arms wrapped securely around me. My ears echoed with the sound of my racing heart, and I tried to steady the beats so Finn wouldn’t hear it too.

I stepped back to create some distance between us. “Thanks for meeting me so fast. I know you might have plans that don’t involve helping me in the middle of the night.” His lack of response suggested maybe I had interrupted his plans, but I rambled on and tried to ignore the jealous surges worming their way into my imagination. “I do really need your help. I need a Guardian Spell.” My voice was strong and urgent. I didn’t want Finn to start charming me with his charismatic smile, crystal eyes, and fiery hands.

“Hmmm….Who needs protecting? I need a little something to go on.” His hands were back in his pockets and he leaned into the sturdy trunk.

I didn’t have the kind of time Finn was going to soak up. “It’s a ridiculously long story, but can you just fly to Atlanta tonight and take care of this girl for me?” I shoved the crumpled piece of paper with Emily’s address on it into his warm hands. “It would really mean a lot to me, Finn. Can you help her?”

“Sure, of course, babe, but first I want to know what this is all about. I haven’t heard from you in months. I see you’re in New York, Ian’s keeping his distance from me at work, and now in the middle of the night, you need my help and I’m supposed to start doling out spells. A spell that happens to be my gift, by the way.” He was irritated, but more on the edge of teasing me, and trying to see how far he could push me and if I’d push back to get the protection spell.

I reread the awful letter in my mind, recounting each scratchy, evil word before responding. The letter only dissuaded us from involving the authorities, but didn’t say anything else about adding allies. If I ever needed an ally, it was now.

“Finn, I do need your help, for more than just the spell, but there’s not enough time to get into the details now. Can you please go help this girl and then meet me back at my house? I’ll fill you in on everything there, I promise.”

“We’re going to talk, Ivy. But, yeah, I can take care of this for you. Miss me.” And with that he pulled me toward him, kissed me, shot up through the towering limbs of Oak Park, and was gone. Dammit! I ran my fingers along my bottom lip, still feeling the heat from that kiss. How could he be so hot and so infuriating?

When his best friend asks for something, Dane rarely says no. But babysitting a newly sober Scout Grimes for three weeks isn't exactly a normal request. And with their history, it's a recipe for disaster. Not to mention, she's drop dead gorgeous and he can't touch her.

There are few people Scout trusts as much as Dane Guillot. He's always been her safe place, where nothing can hurt her. He's also been the only man she's never let herself want--screwing up their friendship isn't worth one amazing night together.

EXCERPT

I can hear her crying, her sobs shredding through me like sharp knives. I don't even know what to do with her quiet words. You keep the nightmares away.

I'm not good at this. I've been broken and breaking things for years. The best—smartest—thing to do would be to call Atti and have him come take care of her.

But I want to be strong for her.

That's the thing—I know I can't be, but it doesn't stop the want to be better for Scout. I shake my head and open the door, dropping clothes on the counter. In the foggy mirror, I can see the shape of her, huddled on the floor of the big shower. "Are you okay?" I ask.

She sniffles. "I'll be out in a minute."

It's a clear request for space, so I back away, reluctantly giving it to her. Pull on a pair of faded flannel pants that I wear when Dad comes to town, and sit on her bed.

Scout comes in a few minutes later, wrapped in the scent of oranges and soap and wearing a shirt three sizes too big.

My shirt looks amazing on her.

"Do you want to sleep here or my room?" I ask.

Her eyes widen.  She might ask—almost opens her mouth to ask—but then she shakes her head and says, "Yours."

I nod and switch off her lamp, leading the way down the hall. I let her crawl into bed, tucking the blankets around her when she shivers, then slip in on my side and hit the lights. "Dane?" she whispers in the dark.

"We'll talk in the morning, Scout. Go to sleep."

There aren't any more nightmares. For either of us.

 REVIEW

This was a fun, quick read. I really loved the idea of being able to Time Spell. It was a different take on time travel and used in such a unique way. I’m sure anyone would love to step back in time, and it would be an author’s dream.

The MC’s of this story kind of blended into the background while the secondary characters, the ones from 1968 Las Vegas were more prominent. I knew more about whom they were and what drove them to do the things they did. I know that their love triangle was a major part of the plotline but I would have liked to have seen more from the MCs.
I really wish the story had had a little more substance where Ivy and her love life were concerned. I really liked Finn, regardless of the fact that I knew nearly nothing about him. All I knew of him had been learned through flashbacks, and even that wasn’t enough to go by. He was made out to be a charmer and even a bit of a bad boy, but his actions told another story. He obviously really cared for Ivy and was willing to do whatever she asked of him.
Then there was Jack. I didn’t really connect with him and I think it also had to do with the fact that I didn’t know enough about him. My heart did break for Ivy toward the end of the book, but she showed true character when she was willing to give up on something she’d always wanted, to keep those she cared about safe.
This book was exciting and full of mystery. It had a bit of everything and I’m sure it will be enjoyed by anyone who loves intrigue and suspense as well as lovers of paranormal romances.

I drew back and arched my shoulders to narrowly avoid a collision. An irritated waiter forged briskly ahead with a squeaky rolling cart donned with silver trays and chilling bottle of champagne on ice. Close call, Ivy, I nervously scolded myself. But a quick peek around the corner curtain of where I had traveled, and I knew this was the right spot. I could feel the energy buzzing and my witchy instincts were happy
I turned back to make sure I had my eye on exactly where the seam was and surveyed the hallway again to listen for the busy waiter and his squeaky cart. Once I could see the faint glow swishing back and forth and knew the hall was clear, I stepped closer to seal it. The seam, along with my grandmother’s sapphire ring, was my only way in and out of the past. I pointed my fingertips toward the glow and whispered, “Eclipse.” The ripples ebbed to a quiet stillness and the glow faded. All that remained was the wall I had just walked through. On the other side of the velvet drapes lining the catering corridor, smoke rings curled, people were laughing, and the high notes of a trumpet echoed. It sounded like I had chosen a good spot for my Time Spell. I smilednow it was time to find a story.
