Forbidden Mind

49% of Americans believe their government officials are honest. I don't know these officials, or their supporters, but I know their secrets, and 49% of Americans are wrong.

My employers pay me well to be right, to know things others can't. But I don't know why they brought that boy in, strapped to a stretcher, barely conscious. He asked me for help when I could give none.

I'm a wealthy spy, a talented artist, a martial arts black belt, and a prisoner. They tell me that on my eighteenth birthday, I will be released, free to go to the college of my dreams. It's my eighteenth birthday, and a man in black is at my door. I know he's not here to free me.

I know, because I can read minds.

My name is Sam, and this is my story.

So begins the tale of Sam and Drake--from the time they link minds, forging a bond that leads to an unconventional romance--to their fight for survival against the corrupt, twisted organization known as 'Rent-A-Kid.'

"...a thrilling, dark and deeply romantic read that had me sitting on the edge of my seat and eagerly awaiting the next installment." ~ Refracted Light Young Adult Book Reviews

Forbidden Fire

"She escaped, but she'll never be free."

"Time held no meaning as my mind darted in and out of memories. Past and present collided to create a full-sensory collage out of my life: playing hide-n-seek with my best friends Luke--who always cheated by walking through walls when he was about to be caught--and Lucy; Mr. Caldrin critiquing my sketches and offering ideas to make them more realistic; targets changing faces, blending into the same person, their thoughts rippling through my mind like waves. Through it all, a demon stalked me from the shadows of my memories, never quite showing its face, but crouching, waiting.

And then I dreamed...."

Sam and Drake may have escaped, but they aren't free—not with a powerful Seeker after them. As Sam struggles with the ethics of her new powers and embraces a blossoming physical relationship with Drake, Lucy and Luke face challenges of their own.

With forces coalescing inside and outside the Rent-A-Kid dorms, it's only a matter of time before the fire they started forces each of them to make choices they can't undo. But will it be enough to save them?

Forbidden Life

The road to redemption begins in darkness.

A sinister force waits for them in darkness, ready to devour their powers and take their lives.

Sam's baby is the key to a lock that must never been opened. To keep her child safe, Sam will do anything.

Drake might have found a way to get his powers back and save his family, but is it too late?

Luke and Lucy uncover secrets in an organization they thought they could trust, and the lives of all Rent-A-Kid children are at stake.

In this last Forbidden Trilogy installment, the secrets to Rent-A-Kid will finally be revealed.

 REVIEW

Because I received the full trilogy to review, I'm going to give my thoughts on each book separately and then let you know what I thought overall :)

Forbidden Mind

This was a truly exciting start to a thrilling trilogy that held many possibilities.

From the start I got a real sense of who Sam was and what was important to her. Her passion for art was her life’s dream and when Headmaster Higgins tried everything in his power to derail that dream, I knew something wasn’t quite right. Why would a school, that trained students with para-powers to act as spies for some of the most important people in the world, give them a free pass into the world? The answer I got was way beyond anything I could have imagined.

This book was filled with plenty of action and heart-wrenching moments. There was a beautiful connection between Sam and Drake, with its unique twist, but I did feel they seemed to fall in love way too quickly. Perhaps the big secret that was revealed in the latter half of the book made their connection stronger, I just didn’t feel it as much as I was hoping to. Having said that, I did get that warm, tingly feeling all over when they finally met face to face and I was excited to see how their love would grow and progress as the story continued.

It was interesting to learn about all the different abilities that the student of Rent-a-Kid had. It was like something out of the X-men. Kinrade delivers an amazing, fast-paced story that sucked me in from the first page. I needed to know more about the characters, and I was routing for them every step of the way. By the end of this book I couldn’t wait to dive right into the second instalment, knowing it would be just as fantastic if not more.

I give it...

Forbidden Fire

I couldn't wait to see where Kinrade would take the story now that Sam and Drake had met and were able to escape.

The second instalment in this trilogy was even more exciting and fast paced than the first. With Sam and Drake on the run from the Seeker and his henchmen, there was nowhere for them to hide, which meant that their lives as well as their friend's were turned upside down. Without any help, I mean who would believe their story of an organization experimenting on kids with para-powers, they were pretty much on their own. The only solution would be to go after the organization themselves, and try everything in their power to help their friends. Not as easy as it may sound. Sam battles many issues...withdrawal symptoms, pregnancy and her fear of the darkness that lurks within her powers, as well as Drake's use of his own. I was glad that the romance was not all a bed of roses. Sam really struggled to come to terms with Drake's power, but that didn't stop her from loving him.

I was excited that this story involved Lucy a whole lot more. Out of all the characters, she stood out the most and I loved her carefree, kick-ass attitude. She really seemed to grow into her own in this book, and she became even more kick-ass. With the threat of her and Luke being sent to the breeding facility it was time for an uprising. I loved that Sam and Drake weren't going to be the only heroes of this story. It wasn't going to be left up to them to rush in and save the day. The kids took a stand and even though the odds were against them, they didn't back down. Even when all hope was lost.

This book adds many unsavory characters, and the truth of Sam's existence as well as her importance is finally revealed in a shocking twist. With even more action, heart-breaking surprises and a violent battle scene, this story was taken to an entire new level. It was fantastic.

Forbidden Life

I wasn't sure how much more Kinrade could squeeze out of her character's at this point. They'd been through hell and back, and were still expected to give us an explosive conclusion to this trilogy. Well they did just that!!

Book two ended with many surprises and I was left with many questions running through my mind. What had happened to Drake? What would happen to the kids? Lucy and Luke? And who exactly were the IPI?

After learning so much about Rent-a-Kid, I had my suspicions about IPI. They seemed to come out of nowhere, and even though they offered to help, were they any different from Rent-a-Kid? What were their motives?

The fantastic thing about this story is that each characters has their own story to tell. Whether it was Sam and her continued struggle with her pregnancy as well as the disappearance of Drake, or Lucy and Luke's latest mission to stop Rent-a-Kid, there was never a lack of thrilling moments to keep the momentum going.

I liked that we got to see Sam and Drake on their own. They each had hurdles to get over and without each other to lean on it made for an enthralling read. New characters are introduced throughout this book, while a few secondary characters from the first two books are brought back to give this trilogy yet another outstanding twist.

Once again, Lucy was my hero. I just cannot get over how amazing she is. She showed such strength and depth. I was glad to see her get a bit of the romance she so desperately craved. The island she and Luke found themselves on was amazing, upping the ante. The story morphed from an X-men, spy action adventure to something out of Journey to the Center of the Earth, with fascinating beasts and mutations. I was blown away.

The tension built up with each turn of the page and when the final battle arrived I was on the edge of my seat. My heart was invested in each of the characters and I was sure I'd be left broken by the end. This is one read that should not be missed.

The Forbidden Trilogy

As you can see from my other reviews, I was blown away by this amazing trilogy. I am truly sad to see it come to an end. I would love to see Kinrade write a few stories that branch off from this. Perhaps ones for particular characters **hint hint, wink wink**

Kinrade has a talent for creating some of the most amazing action-packed scenes, with unique plot twists that come out of nowhere and I cannot wait to read more of her work.

This trilogy will appeal to anyone who loves sci-fi and paranormal reads, but especially those X-men fanatics. (I'm one of them) :) :)

I found this trilogy just got better and better, so overall it gets...

  1. Wow! Thank you for putting such considerate thought into each book's review. I really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to read and review this series and I'm so glad you enjoyed each book more! (Honestly, so did I!) You'll be happy to know that this world of the Forbidden is only the beginning.

In my latest trilogy, a new adult paranormal romance called Seduced by Innocence, Seduced by Pain and Seduced by Power, Sam, Drake, Father Patrick and a few others show up in Pain for a bit. And Luke and Lucy are getting their own series! Blood of the Fallen is the first book in that series, and I'm so excited about it. I'm co-authoring it with my husband, Dmytry Karpov, who helped me a lot with Forbidden Life as a story consultant. It should be out later this year.

You won't believe the new twists in store for Luke, Lucy and Hunter!
