Interview with Kat Nichols

What is the Secret Societies Collection about?

The Secret Societies Collection is a planned series of books about how various supernatural groups interact with humans and each other in northwestern Illinois. Since the series covers multiple groups, each story is divided into two books or a Set. The first two books, Family Secrets and Deadly Secrets, are the Secrets Set and tell Sophia's story. Book three will move on to a new group and therefore will start a new Set. Each set can be read on its own, but the characters’ lives will intertwine with those from other sets, so you can catch up with old favorites or fall in love with new ones.

What are you currently working on?
I currently have several projects going. The first is a short story that will be released to my newsletter followers about Sophia, the main character in the first two books of the Secret Societies Collection, and her first Christmas in Illinois. I’m also working on the third book in the collection, which focuses on a new paranormal group, the Fae. It tells the story of Morgan, who is 16 and completely oblivious to everything supernatural. Finally, I’m working on a New Adult Contemporary about Brynna, a Senior in college, who is hiding from almost everyone, including her new love interest, that her father is a convicted serial killer. It’s different from the other things I’ve written, but it’s been fun so far.
Who has been your favorite character? Why?
I really love Sydney, Sophia’s best friend in the Secret set. She’s tough and she always has Sophia’s back, but she’s willing to tell Sophia to get over herself if she needs to.
Have you always wanted to be an author?
Yes. Always.  I still have notebooks and folders full of Chapter Ones and Story Ideas from high school and college. I wrote a lot of chapter ones, but never finished a book until I got serious.
What process do you use to plan your novels?
I am a plotter. I usually sit down and get a basic idea of where I want the story to go. Once that’s done, I go back and develop that basic plot and break it into chapters. From that point I write. I don’t like to get any more detailed than that so that I can let the muse free when I write. Sometimes she surprises me.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

You have to get out there and mingle with the blogging/writing/reading world. Join discussion groups, follow Facebook pages, and put yourself out there. It can be time consuming, time you may want to spend writing, but you can meet some amazing people. And then, keep going. Don’t stop writing or reading. If possible, find yourself a good writing group to help keep you sane. They will understand what you’re going through and can support you in ways even your best friends and family cannot.

Which authors inspire you?

Number one on the list is Rachel Higginson. Not only is she a wonderful author but she is also a fabulous person. I met my writing group on her fan page. We formed the Rebel Writers and agreed to support each other as we wrote out first books. The Rebel Writers consists of  Alex Tuttle, Caylie Marcoe, Regan Claire, Stormy Smith and Theresa Kay, who are also incredible writers. Without them, I would not be where I am today. I also include authors like Nora Roberts and J.K. Rowling who inspired me with their words. There are so many more I can’t list them all!

If you could pick one favorite book, and only one, what would it be?
That’s like picking a favorite child—Oh wait, I only have one of those!  My favorite book of all time, huh? So many options, but I think I am going to have to pick the Harry Potter series. If I had to pick only one, I’d go with Sorcerer’s Stone. I didn’t join the HP hoopla right away. In fact, my sister-in-law talked about it all the time, but I wasn’t interested. Finally, she handed me the first book and told me to read it. If I hated it, she’d never mention it again. That was around 2007 and the fifth movie was coming out. It took me a while, but now I’m a mega-fan.
Why that book?
I love them all, but there is something to be said about the wonderment of it all, finding out you have magic powers and being sent off to a magic school. I know there is danger too, but this is when Harry finally begins to truly live.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kat Nichols was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. The youngest of four children, she'd been known to play for hours with only a cardboard box for entertainment. Her imaginary friends had friends... and family... and even little cities to play in. As she grew older, she began to put some of these stories down on paper, rather than keeping them in her head.

Writing a novel had always been a dream for her, perhaps an item on her bucket list, but it wasn't until she joined a writing group with other aspiring writers that she finally got to work. When not writing, Kat is reading or driving her son to and from practices and wishing she was reading. It depends on the day.

Kat still lives in the suburbs of Chicago with her wonderful husband, their hilarious son and their sometimes adorable and sometimes annoying cat.
