EXCERPT
From Rae of Hope-
Dr. Garrison knocks lightly and then enters the room.
“Good morning, Rae. How are we feeling?” She sets a chart down on the counter and walks over to me. She didn’t call me Rapunzel. She called me Rae. Every doctor I’ve known has always called me by my given name.
“I’m feeling okay. My head hurts a little.” I lay my hand against my temple. “Right here”.
Dr. Garrison steps up and feels my forehead. “You do feel a little warm.” No thermometer, nothing. She’s treating me like a human being and I’m slowly tearing down the walls I had built up about the healthcare industry.
I’ve always been a test subject.
A job to them.
Another chart to write in.
Here, I’m Rae, the girl needing a cure. I’m a person with feelings, wants, and needs. Here, I’m just me.
I can feel tears well up in the corners of my eyes.
“Oh, dear. Are you in pain?” Dr. Garrison runs her fingers down my cheekbone. Compassion is the only emotion I see on her face. Not pity, disdain, or anything else.
I sniff. “I’m…fine. I just…” and I don’t have to say anymore. I can see the understanding in her eyes. She’s seen this before.
“You’ll be in good hands here. Think of me as your fairy godmother. Poof and you’ll be all better.” She removes her hand from my face and picks up the chart.
