EXCERPT
My stomach rumbles and I give a start when an older female voice with a strong Boston accent sounds from above me. “What’ll you have, hon?”
I look up to see a cloud of ginger-colored frizz being held away from a chubby, but pretty face with a black and white polka dotted headband. Her milky complexion is lined around her eyes and mouth, but otherwise unblemished. Dark red lipstick paints her Cupid’s bow lips and her deep blue eyes are lined with a sparkly liner and shaded in with a silver color; the thick lashes long and coated in the blackest mascara I’ve ever seen. I’m afraid to look lower, honestly. She can’t be for real; my sleep deprived brain has conjured her out of some demented part of my imagination, for sure. But when I blink and focus on her again she’s still standing there, and now she’s looking at me like I might be mentally challenged.
I take in the rest of her form, noticing she’s a few inches taller than me and built like a real woman. She has hips, breasts, and some additional padding, but she looks comfortable in her own skin; sassy and happy. I hope I look like her when I get older, honestly. I think I’m entirely too bony, as well as having a total lack of boobage that I do not care for. The waitress wears a crimson-colored polyester uniform dress that reaches just above her knees with bobby socks and saddle shoes. I glance back up and see her name tag reads “Midge”. I have to be hallucinating. Right?
I shake my head and try for a grin. “Sorry,” I tell her; my voice coming out hoarse from disuse. “Uh—can I get a coffee, please, to start?” I glance back down at the menu quickly to remind myself of the options available and then say, “Pancakes, bacon and scrambled eggs please?” I hear her scribbling away on her miniscule order pad and look down once more before adding, “Home fries, too.” I look up to find her grinning down at me. I feel a blush color my face and can’t stop the grin that comes on. “I’m hungry,” I tell her.
CHARACTER BIO
Carter Emerson
Nickname(s)- None that I willingly go by, no
Age- 16
Height- 5’11
Weight- 165 lbs
Personality- ...I’d like to think I’m a likeable guy. Depending on who you talk to, I am either brutally honest or a compulsive liar (guess that comes with the wannabe-lawyer territory though, huh?)
Last Book You Read- Uh, it was some intensely depressing story Claire recommended me--she insists it's a romance. I think it's just tragic... The Fault in Our Stars, is what it was called. Just finished it last week.
Favorite Quote- "Don't let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace." -The Dalai Lama... I figure if I say that to myself enough I'll start to get it.
Biggest Fear- Getting trapped in a career at the Galena Police Department in which I'll inevitably be shot to death or turn into an alcoholic because I did what my father wanted and never took a leap and chose a job I'd actually enjoy... Forgive me, did that sound bitter?
Last Song You Listened To- "Stay" by Florida Georgia Line
Favorite Food- Being totally honest my favorite food would be french fries... Not the healthiest thing in the world, I know, but I would happily live off those if I could.
