Review, Playlist + #Giveaway: Four Years Later by Monica Murphy

Four Years Later

New Adult bestselling author Monica Murphy winds up her sensational series with this sexy story of two college kids with nothing in common but a bunch of baggage and a burning attraction.

Over. That about sums up everything in my life. Suspended from my college football team and forced to cut back my hours at The District bar because of my crappy grades, I can’t keep turning to my sister, Fable, and her pro-football playing husband, Drew, to bail me out. I just can’t seem to find my own way. Weed and sex are irresistible temptations—and it’s messed up that I secretly hand over money to our junkie mom. A tutor is the last thing I want right now—until I get a look at her.

Chelsea is not my type at all. She’s smart and totally shy. I’m pretty sure she’s even a virgin. But when she gives me the once over with those piercing blue eyes, I’m really over. But in a different way. I won’t deny her ass is killer, but it’s her brain and the way she seems to crave love—like no one’s ever given her any—that make me want her more than any girl I’ve ever met. But what would someone as seemingly together as her ever see in a screwed up guy like me?

Four Years Later Playlist

I have a confession: as a writer, I never have a consistent method when I write a book. It changes up pretty much every book. Sometimes I power through the story, other times I tackle it leisurely. Sometimes I’m inspired by an image or a word, other times the characters live solely in my head and I can’t imagine any actors portraying them.

And sometimes I write a book while listening to music…other books, I don’t. With FOUR YEARS LATER, I did though. I had a Spotify playlist on constant rotation, (you can find it here: https://play.spotify.com/user/1265567874/playlist/6OUjwuGYc4naTH09Au4nid)
and I added songs to it right to the bitter end. Some songs are old, some songs are new and all of them still make me think of Owen and Chelsea when I hear them. Some more than others. Let’s talk about those shall we?

There is one song that is a remake on the FYL playlist. Originally sung by the Bee Gees, the song is called How Deep is Your Love and the version on my playlist is by the bird and the bee. In my opinion this version is waaay better than the Bee Gees one.

These are the lyrics that get to me, that make me think of Owen and Chelsea:

I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You’re the light in my deepest darkest hour
You’re my savior when I fall
And you may not think that I care for you
When you know down inside
That I really do
And it’s me you need to show
How deep is your love

Kills me that I love a song that’s originally from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack but whatever. The words are perfect!

Another song I love is called Broken, by Lauren Hoffman. It’s a sad song and it’s actually about a woman who’s finally over the man who’s so completely broken but still. It fits for Chelsea and how she feels about Owen (though she doesn’t get over him of course!). Here’s a sample of the lyrics:

You’re a little bit damaged, I’m a sucker for that
Wanna take you in my hands, wanna bring you back
You’re a little bit damaged, I’m a sucker for that
Wanna fill up the spaces, and be everything you lack

Because we all know Owen is damaged, right? Of course…

Another song I must mention is Dreaming With A Broken Heart by John Mayer. This song, I love love because it makes me think of Owen. Silly, dumb Owen and how he screws up when it comes to Chelsea. It’s especially fitting when it comes to near the end of the book.

When you’re dreaming with a broken heart
The giving up is the hardest part
She takes you in with her crying eyes
And all at once you have to say goodbye

I hope you check out my FOUR YEARS LATER playlist on Spotify. And I hope you like some of the songs and think of Owen and Chelsea when you hear them.

REVIEW

I heart Owen and Chelsea. Maybe even more the Drew and Fable. Yup, I said it. And as impossible as it may be, because Drew and Fable are the ultimate couple, there is just no way you won't fall head over heels for these two amazing people.

I liked Owen the minute I met him ealier on in this series. He had such a wonderful relationship with Fable, and it only extended into this book. I was super excited that this was his story, and Owen was all grown up. I'd like to say he's nothing like the younger version I remember from Second Chance Boyfriend, but even though he has matured so much, every now and again that vulnerable side showed. It just made me love him even more, because he was so much more than he gave himself credit for - it just took a special someone to show him that.

And that special someone was the utterly sweet and gorgeous, Chelsea. She had this endearing vulnerability about her, and it wasn't just because she had never been with a guy before, or becuase her family life was seriously messed up. Even though she was a bit an introvert, I think she really owned who she was, she wasn't afraid to show her smart side, and I think she'd be a great role model for many girls and women, who too often seem to play dumb because they're afraid of seeming too smart. I think all these attributes were what really won over Owen. She was so very different from what he was used to and she had the entire package.

They were the perfect couple. Both a little broken, both seeking some kind of guidance. Owen brought out another side of Chelsea, while she grounded him a bit and helped him focus on what mattered. I loved his patience with her. It melted my heart every time he put her before everything else. They had a few roadblocks in their relationship, but I had plenty of hope because there was no denying that these two were madly in love, and nothing could keep them apart.

Murphy never disappoints, and this was yet another amazing read that broke my heart and touched my soul. I loved every second spent with Owen and Chelsea, I just wish this story could go on forever.

  3. My favourite part of the series is when Drew wrote ...
A poem for Fable sending a secret message for her to
    Rescue him and
    Save him from his dark
    History and how much he
    Misses her with
All his heart and will always
    Love her and will
    Live for her everyday
    Of his life and that
Without her in his life, he's empty.
